The US public school system is under attack by ButchInWaukeganin politics

There's a reason it rates the claim "False". If that's the standard of discourse you want to hold yourself to, then carry on.

Are you asking what I think needs to be done?

Yes.

So after Greece caused an economic crisis by fudging their economic data, we're supposed to believe this data about how many hours they worked?

Well, you can hope. They came pretty close. With no suspensions and a few different bounces of the ball, they could have won.

What kind of political will do you think it would take? So many issues seem cultural and dependent on what happens outside of school. Those are difficult problems for politicians to solve.

but it is true in general

No, it's not. Provide a citation. I'm guessing you're probably just repeating the same kind of nonsense that has been debunked in the past.

Why a Growing Movement of Young People Could Ignite a Workers' Revolution. Every revolution needs two essential ingredients: young people, who are willing to dream, and poor people, who have nothing to lose. by allliein politics

I don't think so. The true horrors of the communist regimes was not yet totally clear in the 50s. At that point, it wasn't obvious that communism was doomed to horrible failure.

You are correct in my intentions. You miss, however, that my point is only made stronger by people who respond to me by citing Mao as a positive example. It's like shooting fish in a barrel. Or, it's like executing the intellectuals while starving the peasants, as Mao would say.

"Right to work" states have a lower average standard of living, lower average wage compensation, and overall less worker stability than their unionized counterparts.

That was also true before they became "right to work" states, so I'm not sure what your point is other than "different states have different socioeconomic demographics".

It is true that white students in the US perform at the same level as white students in Europe, and it's other students pulling down the averages that makes the US look bad. This accounts for a lot of the difference in performance across states within the US as well.

As I recall from when the Wisconsin crap was going on, that is a piece of propaganda that isn't actually true. It was cherrypicked data from one year. Other years showed other results. And teh whole concept of correlating test scores with unionization doesn't make sense in the first place, as different states have students take tests (SAT, etc) in different proportions, and there are various socioeconomic differences as well.

Who Is The Smallest Government Spender Since Eisenhower? Would You Believe It's Barack Obama? - Forbes by blueskies180in politics

[–]mondaytuesdaywednesd 0 points1 point ago

True, but it certainly implies it. Personally, I don't like headlines that ask questions for precisely this reason. They're often used to imply things that aren't really true or aren't really proven, without actually saying it.

Who Is The Smallest Government Spender Since Eisenhower? Would You Believe It's Barack Obama? - Forbes by blueskies180in politics

[–]mondaytuesdaywednesd -3 points-2 points ago

Okay, so normalize for those things and then compare. Let's say, how about inflation-adjusted per-capita federal spending? That looks like this. Again, Obama's numbers are the highest ever, not the smallest.

Also, I don't like the attitude of "Let me write something that's false, under the assumption that smart people will realize it's false and that I'm really saying something else. Because fuck those morons who actually think the title might be true." That's not how we should do journalism. It's confusing, misleading, and elitist.

I guarantee you, there is a huge fraction of the population who doesn't know that Obama's spending more than any president in history. This is America. We barely have a majority who knows the earth revolves around the sun.

Maybe you would have liked if I added that the sentence applies to rate of change rather than overall level of spending, but that really wouldn’t fit into a headline now would it?

Yes, it would. Is this guy saying nobody has every written a headline about the growth in government spending?

I think the average reader gets that we don’t spend less in actual dollars today than we did in the 1950′s.

Then don't say the opposite.

If you feel your time was wasted by being somehow misled by the title, then there is an easy solution – don’t read the next article I write because you may be in danger of tossing away one or two valuable moments of your life because the title does not meet with your expectations.

Will do.

Why not focus on the substance?

Why not tell the truth in your headline?

Basically, this guy knowingly wrote a false and sensationalist headline to drive eyeballs to his article, and is now acting fake offended that people called him out on it. That type of behavior shouldn't be encouraged.
