US cuts $33m in aid to Pakistan. $1m for each year of Shakil Afridi's sentence. by Oreally71in worldnews

Oh, that's weird, I swear I formatted that properly originally. No worry, I'll edit it now such that I'm sure even the most limited mind will be able to decode its complexities!

Yay, I'm not insane, other people see the harm this guy has done! I was getting a fair few down votes for just such a sentiment but I think Hensah might just be a cunt.

You are right, there are probably political reasons providing motivation to prosecute him, but in a fair judicial system, he would almost certainly be handed down a similar prison sentence, given that he:

1 - Stole batches of vaccines.

2 - Administered them under false pretences.

3 - Intentionally stole dna samples of patients without their consent for reasons of espionage.

4 - Was actively and knowingly acting on behalf of a foreign spy agency in an unauthorized operation.

Items 2 and 3 would likely constitute multiple counts of assault here in Australia, item 4 would give you a life sentence in Guantanoma bay in the US, and item 1 would at least get you a few years for theft.

Of course my use of the term "peacetime" applies. The US is not at war with Pakistan, therefore the US must respect the rights and borders of Pakistan. Terrorism is a civil matter and ought to be handled civilly. If every time a terrorist attacked, it indicated a state of war, then America would have been launched into civil war by the Unabomber and Oaklahoma bombers, and a thousand other domestic terrorists through its history.

The US had options other than a covert operation or declaring war, and I will list some of them below:

  1. Share their intel with the Pakistani government, and attempt to resolve the issue in a discrete diplomatic fashion.

  2. Share their intel with the world, and attempt to resolve the issue in an overt PR war.

  3. Declare that they have ceased hunting Osama and that 9-11 was a one off disaster which was bound to happen sooner or later and only justifies a change in policy, rather than any direct or indirect aggression.

  4. Simply go on ignoring the fact that Osama is in Pakistan, as they had been doing since up to now.

Edit: Apparently if you use a colon next to a number point, Reddit just publishes it as is, but if you absent mindedly use a full stop, it re formats a new number list starting from that item.

Meh, there are some pretty awful people living in the US that I'd like to bring to justice, but I won't, because

a) I don't have the power and

b) the US is a sovereign nation and deserves to have it's peacetime rights and borders respected during peacetime.

Doctor launches fake vaccination program for polio in one of the last strongholds in the world for polio.

Doctor goes to prison for 33 years.

Am I missing something? How is this a miscarriage of justice?

Edit: so, on re-reading, the vaccine was real, but he did steal it from the WHO, was unauthorised, and, the main thing I object to is that he used the guise of medical aid as a front for partisan espionage in a country where medical aid is already besieged with PR problems.

What happens if you take anti-psychotic drugs (such as Clozapine) at regular prescribed intervals if you have no psychological problems/schizophrenia? by flysfoin askscience

[–]mjbat7 4 points5 points ago

While this is true, clozapine is a mild enough D2 antagonist that it would be unlikely to produce movement disorders. A normal person would experience a little bit of sedation, a feeling of mental slowness, and most noticeably, around 20 kilos of weight gain, though I've seen as much as 40. There is also a risk of agranulocytosis, for which we monitor in patients treated with clozapine.

From most accounts, antipsychotic medications are less unpleasant for psychotic patients than their psychosis, but much worse than normality.

Egyptians choose their leader for first time in 5,000 years by Moldavitein worldnews

[–]mjbat7 0 points1 point ago

It might make a difference that there isn't a separation of church and state, but I don't think it matters which particular ideology a government uses as a justification for its crimes.

I feel like the problem occurs whenever some ideology becomes more important than the general welfare and happiness of people, domestic or foreign, be that ideology Islam, Christianity, Communism, Monarchy or, as in present day US, "Freedom".

"Shariah law" is a bit of a button topic. Sharia law requires women wear burkas in some countries, but just like any religious interpretation, it's entirely up to the whim of the interpreter.

Ideally it would be better if Egypt caught up with 20th century civilisation and separated church and state, but even secular laws can easily be used to suppress any minority at the whim of the enforcement agency.

I feel like the important thing is that Egypts leadership stays fluid. Thus, the population will have the option of choosing a progressive, secular leader when one comes up, if that is the will of the people.

Meh, Indonesia is the largest muslim country in the world, and their women/girl/science/freedom problems aren't any greater than the phillipines, a geographically, ethnically, economically and politically similar country of Christian majority. Similarly Turkey has a vast majority of muslims but their only major anti anything beliefs are anti-Kurds and anti-anti-turkey.

There's a depiction of Muslims as believing what the Taliban believe, which is essentially the same as the LRA (a christian group).

In reality most Muslims feel the same way as most Christians: their religion is a comforting idea which justifies whatever situation was the status quo whenever they were growing up.

Here in Aus we have a good samaritan law so that you can't be sued or charged for harm inflicted in the reasonable course of giving first aid or emergency medical help regardless of your training or qualifications.

Y'all should look into getting something similar.

Reddit, I just found a man's finances and nude pictures of his wife on a laptop I bought at a pawn shop. What's your most random/awesome pawn shop find? by AbramsLullabyin AskReddit

[–]mjbat7 1 point2 points ago

I saved up my pocket and birthday money for a year and bought a sega mega drive from the pawn store when I was 7. I used to go in to the shop and visit it every week while I was walking home from school while I was saving up. That sega was my single greatest achievement until I graduated high school 10 years later.

After winning $75,000 at an international high school science fair for developing a cheap, quick, and accurate way of detecting pancreatic cancer by will121000in pics

[–]mjbat7 0 points1 point ago

Damn it, I have humiliated myself and must now commit seppuku.

There are some simple blood tests that have fairly high sensitivity and/or specificity. Lets say that this pancreatic cancer screen has 99% sensitivity and 99% specificity. The incidence of pancreatic cancer is 14/100,000. If we tested 100,000 people this test would probably find all 14 people, because of its sensitivity. But because the incidence is so low, even with a specificity of 99% (which is pretty damn high), you'll also get 1000 false positives.

For those 1000 healthy people, there is no easy, and especially no cheap way to rule out cancer, except to say that the likelihood of pancreatic cancer in a young, well person with no risk factors is immeasurably low. The thing is, you knew that already, so why'd you test me doctor? It caused me so much stress! I'm going to sue you!

It depends on what a "cancer screen" entails. Any woman should receive a "cancer screen" via pap smear every 4 years once she becomes sexually active, but she shouldn't be screened for breast cancer till she is over 50 unless she has a strong family history.

For men, a cancer screen might entail a prostate cancer screen; this is probably a bad idea unless you've got a strong family history, because proving you don't have prostate cancer might well leave you with permanent erectile dysfunction and incontinence.

If a cancer screening entails a full body CT scan, it will almost certainly cause more cancers than it detects.

If a cancer screening entails full body MRI it's unlikely to detect anything except for large, solid tumours, which are likely to kill you anyway by the time they're detected, and it's going to be ridiculously expensive.

Here in Aus medical providers (hospitals, drug companies, doctors, etc) don't advertise intrusively and are often legally prohibited from advertising at all. The vast majority of healthcare is paid for by the state, and so there is little impetus for providers to give unnecessary care for the sake of profit; the government gets annoyed if you're wasting their money.

How are you trained in the biology of the taint?
