I don't think that comparing the PC and console modding scene is really going to end up being a fair comparison.

I just think buying console games all the time is too expensive, lugging a tv and a console up to Uni won't work; and I prefer having better res graphics, more options to fiddle around in and the online is free. Also mods.

Perhaps horror is too harsh a word though. i meant lack of pc options.

No doubt that PC's have their downsides. Folk often cite cost and ease of use as their primary concerns.

However, having been pretty much PC only for near 4 years I can honestly say i'll never go back, my last console being a Gamecube (which was awesome). Also it probably helps that i'm not a programmer/video editor. Unless Nintendo manage to wow me with the WiiU come E3 (which looks increasingly doubtful every day), this is what i'll stick to.

I'm wondering if one possible outcome of this is that folk turn to PC gaming more and more. Instead of dropping $300-400 on a new console, they just spend an extra $200-300 on a pc. Considering pretty much everyone uses a PC anyway, you're looking to spend at least $500 on a new pc just to make sure it lasts. So why not save a few horrors, and go pure pc for a bargain price? Makes sense to me... You can make a decent gaming machine for $800. If you decide to go insane, go on for the full extra $400, and you have a machine that outstrips consoles for that entire generation.

Not anymore. The PS3 and 360 make a profit per console sold, and even if they sold at a loss, it wouldn't make a difference. The profit is in games sold, as the console makers take a cut per game.

How Diablo III's Solo Experience Reveals A Hollow Game by limbclockin Games

[–]mistermordancy 2 points3 points ago

Reading these comments made me realise that i can never support a game with always on DRM. Even if that game is so excellent that some say "its worth it". Even if the connection in this hypothetical future scenario is so perfect that people haven't heard of a dropped connection/server error in years. Even if most people accept it -

i just can't.

So many vows...they make you swear and swear. Defend the developer. Obey the publisher. Sign their user agreement. Do their required linear game. Your money for their shitty game. But obey your non-pirating vow. Love your game series. Protect the developer. Defend the indie. Respect the gods of gaming. Obey the law. It's too much. No matter what you do, you're forsaking one vow or the other

All the recent "female gamer pics" prompted me to give you an actual look into a female gamer. Enjoy, I look like hell. by ProjectStormyin gaming

[–]mistermordancy 2 points3 points ago

Nope, the only thing i have in common with that final definition is "I game", and then not even for hours.

Lets say the stereotype for the "gamer", both boy and girl - is an unfair one. Sure my pc is a beast, but i keep my room spic and span, never eat in front of it anymore, and I don't particularly like energy drinks If i meet a girl who says she's a gamer, she's just as likely to be like in OP's pic or she might keep it completely hidden, i.e. i walk into her room and she happens to have a PC running diablo 3.

Stereotypes suck and drag us all down. I wish we could get rid of them easily.

5 Reasons 'Diablo III' Represents Gaming's Annoying Future by fanboy_killerin Games

[–]mistermordancy 1 point2 points ago

It really depends on how strongly you feel about the issue. In your case, i assume you aren't particularly bothered by DRM in games (i could be wrong of course), or its a specific instance, where the game itself is your concern, and you're willing to overlook the DRM in this one case just to play the game.

Some (myself included) will consider that being an irresponsible consumer, others will not - its really your purchasing decision, but just to remind you that by buying it you are lending credence to the developer and not to consumer complaints.

5 Reasons 'Diablo III' Represents Gaming's Annoying Future by fanboy_killerin Games

[–]mistermordancy 16 points17 points ago

But here's the thing, if you buy it it is implicitly supporting a practice that gamers everywhere complain about and almost universally hate.

Does the fun-ness of the game over-ride the negatives? For some it is enough - they can deal with hiccups and so on, while for others its not, so they won't buy it as its an incomplete product.

Just an opinion mind. Fun is a very very subjective thing - some players have a huge levels of tolerance of what they will deal with, others will only go for the highest value product that has the smoothest ride on their machine of choice. I reckon most gamers are hovering somewhere in the middle - they understand the pains that devs go through, and want to support them, but they feel harrassed/unsupported by the DRM.

How the Christian Right's Homophobia Scares Away Religious Young People: The Christian right is increasingly out of step with how Americans feel about gay rights. This issue might be the one that destroys them in the end. by davidreiss666in politics

[–]mistermordancy 0 points1 point ago

What's interesting to me is that as a British citizen i am perfectly willing to accept that this is a christian nation, based on the fact that the head of the state is also head of the church, so no-one would blame deference in that regard (even though it would be massively anti-democratic). Instead we have a comparatively liberal view of it - same-sex marriage is a question of legislation rather than moral acceptance.

This is all in contrast to America (in my view) which is still divided over whether or not its a moral issue.

Nintendo consoles are notably robust. The build quality of the gamecube as compared to the ps2 and xbox was superb - it could take SO much rattling around. Mine after being bodily flung from a 2nd story window still works fine. I'm rather impressed. This is now an 10 year old console. My n64 bought in 1997 also still works fine.
