We R/Frugal Week 1: Frugal Food by Havenin Frugal

[–]misscee 8 points9 points ago

Grow your own herbs. For a little more than the cost of a package of fresh herbs, you can buy a plant. Or better yet, buy a packet of seeds. You can plant them in your yard or maintain a container garden (indoor or outdoor.) I bought three cheap plastic pots in successive sizes and stacked them one on top of each other. It takes very little space and you can fit quite a lot of plants in there.

How do I make grits? by angry_samoanin Cooking

[–]misscee 2 points3 points ago

Buy some quick grits, not instant. Use about a handful for each person and place in a microwavable pot. Then add four parts water for every one part of grits. Add some salt but not too much. You can adjust the salt and add pepper later. Throw in some cheddar cheese if you like cheese grits. Cook them at 60% (so they don't boil over) for a long time, at least fifteen minutes. You don't want them gritty, so cook them until they are nice and creamy, add more water if needed. Stir them from time to time so they don't get lumpy. Also add some butter if you don't make cheese grits. You cook them for about 40 minutes if you use a stovetop. If you follow the package instructions, just cook them for longer than the package says and you shouldn't go wrong.

Advice for purchasing a used car? by referencemynamein Frugal

[–]misscee 0 points1 point ago

a 1999 toyota corolla, if you can find one. I would use the auto trader as well as craigslist. Also consider a carfax account to research the history of cars that you are interested in. I think it's about $40 to look up five cars. What you want to do is look for oil leaks. Also check the vin numbers on the engine to see that it matches up to the one in the door, so you know if the vehicle has been totaled.

Request: Frugal Lawn Care? by 44in313in Frugal

Wherever weeds pop up, install a plant native to your area. Native plants are always a good thing. If I were you, I would mulch problem areas and put in a native garden.

Simple ways to cook fish by bleu_gasconin Cooking

[–]misscee 1 point2 points ago

I just made this recipe for dinner tonight. I didn't thaw my frozen flounder. I didn't melt the butter. I just put the fish on a baking dish, drizzled olive oil, then the bread crumbs, then I sprinkled some parmesan cheese on top, and lastly I thinly sliced butter and covered the top with the slices. I baked it for about 20 minutes and it was really good.

For sure .... no reprimand, nothing on their record, just a little hiatus from their normal duties. I'd say it almost pays to walk off the job, if you're getting bored, and let's face it screening can be boring, probably even if you get to watch the porno scans all day.

Reddit: My son is five, and he is begging me to 'do science.' Are there any cool (but inexpensive) experiments we could do at home that would blow his mind? by mcflyflyin AskReddit

Silly Putty. Here (pdf) is a nice write up of an activity I used to do in my science classes that I called the Plastic Fantastic Polymer. There are lots of different recipes and background on silly putty on the www.

Minerals. You could easily buy some minerals and perform some of the tests. Talc, biotite (mica), galena, pyrite, halite, and calcite (put it on top of a piece of paper with some text to see the double refraction) were some of my students favorites.

Tornado in a 2 liter bottle (pdf). You will have to buy the connector, but it is really inexpensive.

Have fun!

I fly out of DIA a couple times a year. Since they put in the scanners, I have had to opt out every single time. The last time (Dec.) the metal detector line was closed down. You had to go through the scanners or opt out (which I did.) I guess if you figure that getting a routine grope is not a horror story, it isn't so bad.

Congress quietly lifts ban on horse meat. by [deleted]in news

[–]misscee 0 points1 point ago

Because euthanizing a horse and disposing of the corpse is hella expensive.

Oh the poor thoroughbred and quarter horse breeders. So some horse packing plant gets to make some money. Tax payers fund the regulatory overseers. It's the American way.

Thoroughbreds make up more than ten percent of the slaughtered horses and quarter horses even more. Make those breeders euthanize their horses and a large part of the problem is solved. My family had my horse euthanized when I went away to college. He had equine infectious anemia. I don't see why you can't make individual owners euthanize their horses as well if they can't sell them. I just don't understand why people aren't made accountable. Many owners won't comply, but some will.

Page 2 of the Forbes article did a pretty good job explaining why horse slaughter is so inhumane.

Thank you for responding, but I'm pretty sure Cattle Business Weekly is not an unbiased source. I'll just leave this here. Hold the horse breeders accountable, stop the slaughter.
