What were the days after 9/11 like? by argonautsin AskReddit

The vitriol reached a tipping point with the Clintons and escalated with George W. Bush. I think its growth is more a process of the media than of 9-11.

Gray vs Grey by gingerkid1234in grammar

[–]mishnak 0 points1 point ago

I'm American, but at some point landed on "grey," thinking it looked somehow softer. It's the only one I use now, so there's no grey-area.

Gray vs Grey by gingerkid1234in grammar

[–]mishnak 0 points1 point ago

The pronunciation difference you're noting is a slightly stronger diphthong when "grey" precedes a noun. I would argue this is a poor choice to inform the spelling as it is not only limited to the word "grey" and you'll find similar pronunciation variations in words you'd never consider changing the spelling of. For example:

  • "I went to the playhouse to see a play."

  • "I went to the racetrack to see a race."

  • "My gay friend loves Tina Fey."

I'd just settle on a spelling and stick to it.

Could you stop downvoting correct answers and upvoting incorrect ones, please? Thanks. by brancronin grammar

[–]mishnak 7 points8 points ago

You have to consider your audience. If someone is double checking the rules of the word comprise, do you really think the following is instructive:

That's the basic usage book rule, but it's an oversimplification. It doesn't take into account the difference between the active and passive use of comprise. As usual, MWDEU has an excellent [1] entry on it (p. 273).

Your tone is short. You provide no examples to back up your assertion. Instead, you link to the Merriam Webster Dictionary of English Usage, but in referencing it in acronym, you add a barrier to the "correct answer" you'd like to see upvoted. The link itself is to a somewhat cumbersome google books entry, where it isn't immediately apparent which of the three pages or many highlights address the issue.

Comparing that to the top result, which is missing the nuance but gives the "oversimplification" in clear and friendly terms, I think it becomes clear how that comment found its way to the top.

As a lover of language, don't forget its purpose: to communicate ideas.

Netherlands Starts Pot Band For Tourists by fiveinacarin Amsterdam

[–]mishnak 1 point2 points ago

Nah, the point is the ban is not in Amsterdam and the chances of it being are beyond slim.

The City of Amsterdam opposes the measure which were drafted up by right-wing members of the national government. Right now, the restrictions are only going into place in the southern provinces, where, admittedly, there is a problem of neighbors from other countries crossing the border, driving stoned and engaging in other illegal stuff. Amsterdam is located in North Holland, is more liberal than the rest, and as the largest city, maintains a certain amount of autonomy, especially when dealing with a substance that is technically illegal one way or the other.

Last week, the center-right coalition that was running the country fell, which means they no longer have the support of their members and in September there will be an election. It's looking promising that a more rational center-left coalition will have the support to take over, and in that case, any threats to Amsterdam's progressive policies will not come to pass.

These are the facts here in the Netherlands; the headlines are all just sensationalism because it makes a good story. If you're going to post anything to r/trees, post this.

This is absolute and total nonsense. With whom are the citizens of the EU [European Union] expected to fight and die with as was done in Gettysburg? Since when is that a prerequisite for a nation-state confederacy and shared currency?
