After years of my family telling me that mussels would be dirty and disgusting, I finally cooked some last weekend while everyone was gone, and they were awesome! by millerhighlifein Cooking

Those are exactly the mussels I bought. I got them at Costco. Maybe that's why they were so good!

Apparently you know everything. So write a book.

There is a lot to be said about disease in shellfish as well. I've read a lot of books. Hey guess what, everyone has a different opinion. Try to embrace that.

That's what cooking is all about. Get over it and accept it. Do you cook when you're angry? Wow.

And for the record, I'm not a HE.

I'm sure that's why he wrote a book on Fish & Shellfish. Oh wait this is Reddit. What was I thinking?

Most of my family has not been exposed to much seafood and think that anything in a shell is gross to begin with. Since mussels are about the cheapest seafood per pound, I think they get a bad rep.

Um, living in Michigan, USA, there's no chance I could pick them myself. Reading up on mussels before I bought them, many experienced chefs recommend buying cultivated mussels because they are easier to clean, rarely contain grit and have a more delicate flavor than their wild cousins. The ones I bought were farm raised in Canada.

Actually it was quite salty, with the addition of the bacon. I do like the taste of the brininess of the mussels, so next time I may omit the broth. I forgot to pick up some wine to cook them in, so that would help too. Overall I was happy with the outcome and would do it again...I just wish I could get a smaller bag for myself!

What are some common mispronunciations of foods/food items that irk you? by waffles93in Cooking

It seems that when it comes to food, Brits have no respect for anyone else's language.

I based the recipe loosely off this one. Used an onion instead of a shallot and I didn't have any wine. I didn't use the tomato and I crumbed cooked bacon on top of the mussels before I steamed them.

Poor Paula. She's been bashed by the media so much in the last few months. I'm not a follower of hers, but I don't hate her. She's never claimed to be an accomplished chef, or even a "chef" for that matter, she's a cook. I bet she'd be a blast to drink some beers with. I also think she could kick a few people's butts when it comes to cooking simple, delicious food. Haters gonna hate!

Actually that is a username that I use here on reddit. It's not my name in real life.

That being said, if he was just losing water, why would he be testing positive for ketones for the past three months?

I think you might have an odd obsession with razors.

The point was that he needs to shave once a week or less. Did you miss it?

When I did keto a few years ago mine didn't improve, actually stayed the same, which wasn't good. Of course I don't have a baseline for him, so I won't know if it has changed or not. It's not like most 16 year olds normally have a cardiac risk panel run just because.

He drinks plenty of water, no issues there. He doesn't eat much as far as fiber or vegetables and tends to eat the high-fat meats and cheeses. I think the only reason he can get away with that is because of his age. It is a good idea to at least get a lipid panel done on him. I'll ask my doctor when I see him this week.

He drinks plenty of water, probably eight or more 16oz bottles a day. He says he's just not hungry any more, or he'll get hungry and wait and the feeling will go away. I know he's tired of the same foods too.

He's only with me during the week, so I'm sure he sleeps in on the weekends at his dad's.

He hasn't gotten much taller in the last few months, he's at 6'4 1/2" right now. I think he may be about done. As far as shaving goes, a razor can last him a month.

Well he's always tired, but he was before he started this diet because he sleeps like a typical teen- around six hours a night. I can't really tell if he feels any worse or not.
