TROPHY CASE

New to Double Bass! by anchoronmysleevein doublebass

[–]meyerkarrsini 2 points3 points ago

I am a 5'1" girl who has been playing bass for almost 10 yrs (and I am definitely not the shortest bass player that I know of). When I first started I was so small I had to play a full sized cello that was tuned like a bass. Gender and size has no bearing on one's ability to play the bass if they really want to play.

My first instinct was also to cross strings but I came to the same conclusion you did. I also felt like I was wasting too much effort and energy trying to get one string vibrating enough to get a good sound just to move to another one a millisecond later.

Eventually, I kind of mixed crossing and shifting as well but with a lot of finger substitutions. I know it keeps the fingers moving a lot more but finger substitutions, timed correctly, end up putting a lot more notes underhand and making it a little bit easier on yourself. Once I had this mapped out as well as I could it became a lot more fun to play.

And I'll be damned if I don't know my bass a lot better after practicing this for a few hrs. lol

It definitely "separates the men from the boys" in the low strings. We're performing it in about 2 weeks and I just now came up with fingerings that actually work at that tempo. I have never had such a hard time deciding on fingerings in all my 10 yrs of playing bass..

This is exactly how I felt when my university orchestra decided to sight read the Haffner Symphony.

Anyone else going to the TCU Bass Festival? by BasicBassistin doublebass

[–]meyerkarrsini 0 points1 point ago

I really wish I could but I would have to fly and I simply don't have the funds. But it would fantastic if anyone who was going could report back with vids and posts in general about anything they learned in the masterclasses that could stir up a good conversation!

Please...?

Peanut Butter Cup Brownie Cake by ScarlettMadiin FoodPorn

It's actually a peanut butter mousse. I made this about a year ago and it's just as good as it looks as long as you're careful with the mousse. It's easy to mess up the peanut butter/cream cheese taste balance.

I think I'm even more jealous of his flawless technique. It just looks so perfect that it makes all of the upper register nonsense look easy. And such a clear tone!

That being said, I think I'll go practice now..

My sister asked me to make a zombie themed cake for her daughter's first birthday. How did I do? by meyerkarrsiniin Baking

I'm hoping by then she'll have her mother's wonderful sense of humor and wont blame me for having such a... unique first cake.

Btw, just to clear things up, she wanted a zombie themed cake because she sometimes refers to Stella as "Zombie Baby" as she is quite the biter.

The cake, the second time around, also turned out amazing! I had made it once before (which made me even more disappointed in myself for forgetting to butter and flower the pans) so I pretty much knew the steps by this time around. It's a great cake for showing off without way too much effort! haha

A while ago I was making this cake for a friend who was catering a wedding and I forgot to butter and flower the pans so I had to scrap the first batch of the chocolate layers which only came out of the pans in chunks. Instead of throwing them away I made them into cake pops with vanilla buttercream frosting and milk chocolate and white chocolate coating.

They were absolutely amazing! The chocolate and vanilla buttercream tasted great together and the oreo pieces gave it a nice little crunch. I highly recommend them!

They taste amazing! The apple is definitely going to be your favorite part of this pop tart, which is why I'm going to cut them up and spread them out a little bit better next time.

That recipe sounds great too! I'm definitely going to have to try that filling next time I make these. Thanks for sharing!

Source: Nutella Apple Coconut Chocolate Pop Tarts I messed up making the dough the first time I tried it so I wussed out and got pre-made pie crusts from the grocery store. Next time I'm going to get a chocolate pie crust and chop the apples up a bit so that there's more apple in each bite. They were still amazing though!!
