IAmA Current Zynga Game Designers, AMA! by ycosethin IAmA

Yes this is coming from a mismanaged former employee, from the previous reddit blockbuster.

  1. Lucky you. How are the green badges/contractors doing now?

  2. I guess you don't work with a pod that works directly on game assets.

  3. Yeah, that was the general sentiment when I was still working there.

Context : Zynga has 1500 full time employees. I would wager at least 35% of those folks are more than capable of making unique game IP.

Why does Pincus keep buying other game IP, companies, engine tech, and literally buying audiences, when he can just utilize internal teams to build new games?

What's the average working hours at the Death Star complex? (SF) (Still bordering 65-90 per week)?

Why do you trust the product managers to make engineering decisions, on the fly?

Do you really believe your vesting schedules for common stock are worth it? (2-4 years of labor)

It is a good thing for the gaming industry.

Brogrammers just have to suck it up.

Engine problem == dev team + tech ready to deploy.

I wouldn't want to be in your position,

Specifically the "no engine + we have funding + deadline" part.

Seriously?!?!?!

Pump and dump.

Zynga shouldn't recover from their current stock slump.

Thanks to everyone who supported us here on Reddit.

The feedback and criticism kept my crew informed.

Also, some "metrics" showing the sign of the times. :)

Yes, I was a Linux / Gentoo user during my university years, also spent a lot of time studying device drivers and system call structure under Linux. Unfortunately, having to be the build manager, I have to stick to Windows, since that's where the majority of build related bugs mutate...

Linux is also a good test for any native build; if you can port to Linux, you can port to MacOSX, and with a little more library mangling, trivial to port to iOS. Porting to Linux was a mission requirement.

The particular reason? We have to be in as many operating systems as we can.

You are either everywhere, or nowhere.

Dude, you're way ahead of our crew already, and we are surviving. I say roll it :)

It's all the work associated with building up, maintaining and finishing the KS project that sucks a lot of time.

I'm curious about the human costs of using Kickstarter. How much additional time do you find yourselves spending directly in support of that campaign?

Daily contact, lots of emails, trying to contact media and forums. So, just like any other job. Expect to work overtime.

I think this is about the same effort as dealing with publishers, however, it's a more honest approach. You won't have to deal with high aspirations, or stupid metrics. All you have with you, is your project.

And that's the true spirit of Kickstarter, and crowd funding in general. We're going to be sticking with this model as a studio for a long time.
