What the most effective way to burn calories by Ernstaminain Fitness

[–]menuitem 1 point2 points ago

If calories are your concern, then the most effective way to get rid of them is not to eat them in the first place.

Let me ask you instead: where can't you get them?

Shin Splints up the wazoo after getting new shoes by littletinyguy18in running

[–]menuitem 4 points5 points ago

As you probably know, there is no one manifestation of shin splints - they can be one or a combination of lower-leg related problems. How to address them depends intimately on their cause and their manifestation. But, addressing them usually requires some combination of the following:

1) RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation).

2) Myofascial release. Google it. Get videos on youtube about self-massage for myofascial release, and do that. Also, learn about foam rolling, buy one, and do that.

3) Injury indicates over-use. Cut back on your weekly running distance, check your running diary (you've been keeping logs of your runs, riiiiight?) to figure out about at what distance the injury came in, and after a week of recovery, come back with a weekly running distance level well below that. Then, increase your mileage by no more than 10% a week.

3a) Injury can also be due to the surfaces you run on. Running on hard surfaces exacerbate the problem. Thus, try running on softer (even) surfaces, going from soft to hard: grass, dirt trail, treadmill, black asphalt, sand, concrete, snow. Try really hard not to run on marble or granite when treating shin splints. Ref..

4) Usually for new runners, your lower legs don't have the muscles you need to run. Do one-legged calf extensions daily, increasing the number as much as possible.

5) Stretch, every day. Stretch before the run. Stretch after the run. Stretch when you wake up. Stretch before you go to bed.

6) Do daily heel walks, then toe walks. Walk 100ft on your toes, then 100ft on your heels (heel-to-toe style).

Contributors to shin splints you should consider and remedy as needed:

1) Perhaps your shoes suck and need to be replaced.

2) Perhaps your form is having you put stress on your ankles. Watch form videos, modify as needed. Here is an excellent video on running form.

And now, for anecdoes: the things which helped me the most from the above list: cut weekly running distance, and increase it again; myofascial release; stretching; calf-raises; heel-toe walks.

And: I have yet to see an accurate and helpful list which addresses all "shin splints". Shin splints are not a single affliction, and they can be due to a variety of causes. You're going to have to try this and that to figure out what it is to solve your problem.

Further to this: Note that after 23 years, the principle on the loan has increased, from $26K to $45K.

She may have paid "faithfully", but what she paid faithfully didn't even pay for the interest on the borrowed amount (in which case, the principle would have stayed the same), and so her principle ballooned. Which is the path of idiots.

What this thread needs is a photograph of a dog playing golf with the caption "I have no idea what I am doing".

Whether or not debt is worth it, depends on the return on that investment.

A bachelor's degree in electrical engineering is probably worth $20k in debt, because the salaries in that sector are high. A bachelor's degree in philosophy probably is not, because salaries in that sector are low.

As a frequent traveller, I found this question is easily answered by searching for runs on mapmyrun.com or -- even better -- just looking at the aggregate mileage heatmaps on nikeplus.com.

Is there such a thing as too much protein? by Magresin Fitness

[–]menuitem 2 points3 points ago

It gets thrown around as a general pound of body mass because it saves explaining the need to and how to calculate one's lean body mass; and, because for the vast majority of people who care, they are not obese (say, 400 lbs and 5'8"), but have body masses where the difference between 200gm/day and 160gm/day (both subject to measurement errors in practice) is not known to be clinically significant.

Your body fat doesn't need protein; and putting protein in your diet in proportion to your body fat does nothing to build muscle, since you won't build muscle as a fractional function of your bodyfat, but will build muscle as a fractional function of your muscular mass.

I am actually not kidding. And unless the only time you have good sex is when you fight, I don't see that it encourages fights.

In fact, I see it as disrupting fights.

This, to me, looks like someone grabbed the child, then held her arm while dumping a bucket of water on her, taking a picture at that moment.

If you look in the right frame, between the water droplets, you just see sand. The waterfront is too far away for this to be a wave.

Look at the water itself; waves don't crash like that. It's a small amount of water, and it is a very thin planar stream which is quite long.

"Settling" is not the reason. Flour is more or less the same, and it doesn't arrive at the market with as much volume change.

What "amazing fact" or colloquialism do you know is actually wrong, and you're sick of correcting people about it? by TestZeroin AskReddit

[–]menuitem 1 point2 points ago

While I haven't read any scholarship on Einstein's aptitudes, the standard lore was that he was a mediocre mathematician (among his colleagues -- not, obviously, among the general population); and this contributed to the 9 year delay between his work on special and the publication of his theory on General Relativity (which involved some complicated mathematics).

While it's an impassioned speech, it's ignorant. The Scots have a great culture -- beautiful lands, a proud history, contributions to arts and letters, and uh, food (of a type). And to dismiss the English as "just wankers" is to dismiss an island nation which colonized the world, spread its institutions, people, language and culture to dominate the globe for centuries -- certainly the most successful culture of the last 1000 years, in terms of spreading itself.

Still, it's a funny speech when read with a Scottish accent. It plays an important role in conveying the anger and isolation within their own culture of the protagonists.

Treadmill vs. Running Outside? by albinosnowin Fitness

[–]menuitem 9 points10 points ago

Yes, are of those questions are indeed completely irrelevant.

But, if you -- like me -- have run on a treadmill for about 4 years of training, and also over ground for about 4 years of training, you would know without even asking that running on a treadmill is easier than over-ground running.

You can think about it -- as I have -- and I agree that it doesn't make physics sense that the treadmill should be easier. It seems to violate relativity. And, yet, treadmill running is easier, in the way that gzcl describes. I used to think about this just about every time I got up on a treadmill for my 6-milers. Could never figure it out, to the level of a mechanics proof.

I invite you to run a couple hundred miles on a treadmill. Then a couple hundred over ground . You'll see the difference.
