New guy to wine. Where do I start? by musicafictain wine

Italy might have something to say about that. And while I don't disagree with you, California always seems to brag about this

My professor just announced that C is the engineering program of choice. Is this true? by rbart65in AskEngineers

[–]melanthius 1 point2 points ago

As a ChemE, I approve of this message.

Matlab is of decent general utility, and depending on where you end up in the workforce, may be one of the more useful (IMO).

Fortan is still used in quite a bit of high performance computing and simulations. Why? Because it works... some of my former professors favored it because of its simplicity and stability compared to Matlab.

Telling your son the worlds worst swearword... by ChrisHSOTEin humor

[–]melanthius 12 points13 points ago*

The reason women get really upset about this word is it implies the woman isn't good for anything except fucking. In that way it is similar to calling a woman a whore, but somehow the connotation is even worse. A whore is still a working girl. A whore might be selling herself out of necessity. A cunt implies the woman has no redeeming qualities whatsoever except for getting fucked.

This explanation by XavierScorpionIkari is accurate in that cunt literally means a woman's genitals, but the connotation when a woman is called a cunt goes beyond the literal definition.

Edit: I can only speak from the perspective of an American; I am aware it is not the same connotation in non-American countries.

That sounds pretty nice actually...

this is the product I use to keep my disposal clean and fresh. It works ridiculously well and the results are pretty long lasting... I probably go through one pack of these every 18 months.

I don't understand how to live without a garbage disposal... even my landlord thought it was the one thing worth fixing immediately when it had a problem. (CA resident)

And don't worry, anytime I go to someone else's place, their disposal switch scares the shit out of me too.

They're not that hard to install all things considered. Maybe you should start showing people "the way" out there.

I've poured grounds down the sink for 10+ years (garbage disposal), no problems.

It would have made so much sense if adopting civics like Slavery affected culture later on. Like... having citizens in your cities who have permanent unhappiness because they claim they are still being oppressed. But, it would also produce Great People later on as well.

Bullshit. I am an American, drive manual, and use the handbrake if the hill is steep enough to warrant it. It is how I was taught (by an American).

As someone who has traveled to many parts of the world, I can confirm that there are plenty of shitty drivers in Europe as well as in the states.

It appears that the creation of this thread has resulted in the congress of all the drivers on Reddit who (a) drive a manual and (b) have never rolled back even a single inch in their lives.

It would be awesome to find some kind of gravitational ultralens that instead of just focusing light, caused it to make a 180 and do exactly what you are referring to (naturally).

Pick a region and start exploring whatever is reasonably priced (to you) in that region.

You can spend a lifetime learning about Italian wines, Spanish wines, California wines, you name it. If you focus your search to a specific area you will learn a lot faster. It is a good idea to pick your the area based on the type of cuisine you prefer.

I live in California so I stick primarily with CA wines. They are often excellent and usually there are plenty of reasonably priced options for me.

Two of my favorite underappreciated areas are Paso Robles, CA area (lots of good Zinfandels and Syrahs) and Lodi, CA (more good Zinfandels).

I recommend these because I enjoy these types of wine pretty "young" (soon after purchase), whereas Cabs I typically enjoy more if they've sat in proper storage for a few years' time.

Once you've tried some wines from your area of choice, the best way to learn more about the wines of the region is to make a trip out there and do some wine tastings.

There's nothing wrong with drinking red "table wine" which is usually a blend of several varietals. They can often designed to be more pleasing to the palates of more people.

What is required to wear the badge, Engineer? by WarWizardin AskEngineers

I have an engineering PhD from an ABET accredited university; my company still won't call me an "engineer" until I pass the P.E. exam.

10/10 talented douche

I rarely ever really actually meet someone matching this description. Type-A douches talk the talk, but all of the most talented people I have ever worked with were really modest in general, and those who produce the best work product are always self-conscious that their work might not be good enough.
