TROPHY CASE

My solution to those tiny hitboxes to close ads... by Exalliumin Android

[–]meinhyperspeed 1 point2 points ago

To be fair, it wasn't just a switch as I still do all the design for it.

I'll see if we can make the X button bigger (I understand it's annoying), but it might just be part of the ad SDK that we can't change.

Rethinking the iPhone's App Switcher | The Verge Forums by sciencebenin apple

There's a popular Photoshop file that makes creating iOS mockups quicker. The time in the status bar in that file is 4:20, and the layer in that file is actually named "420, yo!"

So, it's more likely that they used this PSD file as a base and just didn't change the time.

You could show off your great personality by not being a douche about what type of phone you have.

How a few popular Android apps could get an ICS design refresh while keeping their branding, with mockups. by meinhyperspeedin Android

Working on it. We had to focus on new features/bug fixes for a while, but it is coming.

Awesome! That looks really nice. I made a Facebook one for a different screen as but didn't include it.

I feel like our designs would go well together. :)

Thanks! It's sluggish because Netflix went the route of using a WebView to a mobile website rather than making a native app. Not that WebView apps couldn't be a little smoother, but I almost always prefer a native experience over a WebView experience.

Probably a few things:

  • Developers ignore the new guidelines since Ice Cream Sandwich is still such a small percentage of Android devices. That said, apps like Market have an ICS-style design on all versions of Android.

  • The new design guidelines are still relatively new, and redoing your entire app's design takes quite a bit of time, for designers, developers, and testers. Let's not forget that before Ice Cream Sandwich, Android basically had no design guidelines.

  • Developers of new apps follow what they see on the Market and on the devices they use, not what they see on the design guidelines site.

  • Not everyone is aware of the new design guidelines. The Android team is doing a great job with them, but they still haven't caught on as much as they should.

  • A lot of designers are biased towards iOS, and don't really care to follow the new Android style.

Looks like someone didn't update their target SDK.

If you set the SDK level in your app to anything Honeycomb or above, that goes away. The menu button still works for devices that have one, of course.

Facebook ICS mock-up by monkfishbandanain Android

[–]meinhyperspeed 8 points9 points ago

This is much better than Facebook's app, but a few things:

  • As mentioned, Facebook would definitely go with a blue action bar.

  • In the white contextual action bar, the icons should all be on the right side. Why is there an X and a checkmark?

  • The action bar icons are oversized and too close to each other in most of the shots.

Anyway, just nitpicking. Good stuff.

Yep. #2 was correct from Eclair to Gingerbread. #3 is correct in Ice Cream Sandwich.

The first one is just some bullshit.

Instagram is out for Android! by palmdalianin Android

[–]meinhyperspeed 3 points4 points ago

I'm not denying that Apple's HIG is much more thorough, helpful, and informative, but the ICS design guidelines are not total crap. If Instagram had read them and followed them, the app would look and work differently in many ways.

The ICS design guidelines are insufficient, although still better than what we had a year ago (nothing). I'm still not seeing the "make it blue" part, though - they provide a palette of colors for use on that page. They seem to be more of a suggestion than a guideline - their real advice is "Choose colors that fit with your brand". (An actual quote from that page, unlike your "make it blue" quote.)

The ICS design guidelines are much more than that. I'm not even sure where you're getting the "make it blue" part from.

A lot of developers do incorrectly assume that ICS design means black and blue everywhere, though. It's not. In fact, almost all of the stock apps use the holo light theme.
