Search engine DuckDuckGo does not track how you use it. It keeps no click records. Buffers no search results. It's just you and your computer. CEO Weinberg has no interest in looking over your shoulder. by rspix000in technology

Ask, since 2010, have "outsourced" their searches to a "nameless third party", probably Bing or Google.

RProxy - a highly efficient reverse HTTP(S) proxy by sanitybitin netsec

[–]meeb 1 point2 points ago

A proxy is used by clients to connect out, such as your PC using a proxy in a corporate network to connect to external servers.

A reverse proxy is run in front of external servers for multiple reasons such as shielding private internal networks from having to be directly exposed to the internet, load balancing and other uses. Its name is quite descriptive as it's the opposite of a traditional proxy (on the reverse / other side).

Not at all disagreeing with you but I imagine the apparently grey area is that you're welcome to travel but is restricting one method of travel a violation of rights.

Naturally it's all bullshit and I'm strongly anti-security-theatre (also I'm not American). However it seems laws these days are made when a grey area is tested enough that it becomes common and undisputed practice, which is pretty tragic.

They can't legally do anything about abuse, no, however currently they can decide you can't fly if you piss them off as that's not a protected right.

"Why Linux Sucks" - 2012 edition by acurriein linux

[–]meeb 5 points6 points ago

That's equally true of Windows, I run both Windows and Linux and my (very modern) Dell laptop doesn't have SSD SATA drivers or network drivers (even ethernet) in Windows 7, meaning I have to fuck about for hours downloading crap from Dell onto USB sticks and extracting INI and DLL's everywhere before I can even install anything. Everything is natively supported under modern Linux kernels, naturally.

Not that I'm some rabid fanboy, I run both Windows and Linux for good reasons, I've just personally found native hardware support far superior under Linux in the last few years on the particular machines I have here.

As a direct result of the Pirate Bay ban, the website of the UK Pirate Party has jumped more than 100,000 places in the UK rankings and any moment now will become the 1,500th most-visited website in the country. by nomdewebin worldnews

Depends on the provider, DNS changing doesn't work for (as an example) Virgin customers.

Edit: argh, people! Use a proxy, easiest way, try https://tpb.pirateparty.org.uk/

Cleanfeed is primarily IP based, using URL resolution, if done properly it blocks HTTP and HTTPS.

[–]meeb 2 points3 points ago

It's an IP based block, not DNS based, HTTPS tcp/443 is still filtered. On Virgin, they serve HTTP over the HTTPS port, which is a bit stupid.

World War II Casualties (X-post from r/history) by fortissimotoin dataisbeautiful

[–]meeb 22 points23 points ago

Yes, we did, but we didn't have our cities invaded or starved to death in sub-zero winters or had a percentage of our population marched into gas chambers.

Loads died in the blitz, not on the same scale though. We had butter shortages. Think of the scones, damnit.

Valve's Gabe Newell Talks Linux Steam Client, Source Engine by nimoovin linux

[–]meeb 2 points3 points ago

qemu can do standard virtualisation, and was the basis of KVM, the mainline Linux virtualisation choice, however it can also do full architecture emulation such as ARM on x86, x86 on ia64, etc.

The Itanium architecture is 64bit only and pretty different to x86, so you'd need to emulate x86 on Itanium first before you could run anything x86, such as steam. Yes, naturally it would make more sense to run x86 Windows in qemu on Itanium in my example, but the entire point was that it was stupid.

US 'Blackmails' EU Into Agreeing To Hand Over Passenger Data by nomdewebin politics

This new directive forces the EU to send passenger flight data to the US even when you're not travelling to the US - which obviously is insanely invasive.

If you know the fingerprint of the VPN server you're connecting to and check it, no they can't, that's the entire point of a VPN.

Addison Lee - enough is enough? by tibblyin london

His views on cyclists are absurd and offensive, yes.

However, having some taxis but not others allowed to use bus lanes is really pretty silly as well. I don't see how 4000 extra cabs using bus lanes given there's already way more black cabs using them is going to lead to cyclist armageddon.

The government should stop being silly and properly clarify what exactly a bus lane is, at the moment it's "bus lanes and these special cars we like for some reason".

In future, slightly useful stuff could be combined with other stuff to make possible cool chains if stuff or new materials. Not complete yet, but an interesting step forward in the junky stuff to more useful stuff without too much hassle. Stuff.

Anyone know a good spicy cocktail? by hubayin cocktails

[–]meeb 2 points3 points ago

A favourite here:

  • 50ml good vodka
  • half a lime (juiced)
  • bar spoon of caster sugar
  • 15ml chambord
  • small chilli, varying on how spicy you like it, we use Chile de Árbol
  • 15ml water (optional)

Cut the chilli in half length-ways, and cut one half again into two quarters, muddle a chilli quarter at the bottom of a boston class with the bar soon of sugar (the more you muddle it the spicier the drink).

Add ice and the rest of the ingredients (the optional water makes it less intense), shake until cold and all the sugar has dissolved. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass lightly rimmed with sugar, garnish with the remaining half a chilli split over the side (remember to tell people not to eat the garnish unless they want a serious challenge).
