Is 5400rpm hard drive good enough for video playback? by hayashirice911in hardware

[–]mckirkus 5 points6 points ago

A normal 5400 RPM hard drive can read at 80MBytes/second. If you turn on statistics during a blu-ray you'll see that they peak at 40 MBits/second which is 5MBytes/second.

Bottom line - A 5400 RPM drive is 16x faster than you need even for demanding blu-rays. If your HDD is badly fragmented that 16x number drops but then why would you have a fragmented HDD?

no one follows personal sites.

This is the logic behind open social. You could just get a blog somewhere and it would function as your Facebook profile, people wouldn't need to actually visit your blog to see updates, think RSS.

Am I crazy or are SSD prices falling like a rock? 256GB Crucial M4 now under $200. by mckirkusin hardware

[–]mckirkus[S] -1 points0 points ago

Capacity is becoming irrelevant. I use WMC as a HD DVR and I can't imagine I'll ever need to delete a show. The sweet spot is 256GB, that's all most people need so if their price drops below a 2TB HDD big manufacturers will start to switch.

If I could edit my submission I would, so you can all put down your pitchforks. I didn't know Reddit would add that to my link. That's why.

Wrong. RAM isn't used for caching writes to your HDD. An SSD will make a potentially large difference depending on how high the quality of the video is.

Corporations will do fine. The middle class, not so much. We define a healthy economy as one with GDP growth. That may need to change.

If this non-broken corporate structure works then you should assume it would also work in the past. And the fact that it hasn't taken over as the defacto structure already means what exactly? Conspiracy?

Your OS takes care of write caching? That's news to me? What happens when you have 16GiB of writes cached and you lose power?

You probably have your visuals turned up to the point that you're not getting much more than 60FPS. Turn off AA and you'll probably see it.

And this is why people generally recommend buying the biggest known-reliable SSD you can afford. I'm sticking to the Intel 320 or 330 SSDs for now.
