In an apocalyptic scenario, what would be the best/safest route from the west coast of the US to the east coast, or vice versa? by durooin Survivalist

Yeah if you're anywhere near a line you can't miss 'em.

I'd keep high tension power lines in mind, their rights-of-way are kept fairly clear and might be a way to bypass trouble spots if you're on foot.

Since you referenced the corralito, have you read Ferfal's blog about his experience? There's a post right now advising how to prepare for Greece's troubles.

Would Gary Johnson endorse Ron Paul if Paul got the GOP nomination? by derpledooDLEDOOin Libertarian

[–]mation 0 points1 point ago

I don't know exactly what would happen if Ron Paul won the nomination but I suspect the entrenched interests within the party would go nuts. The resulting platform would probably be a huge pile of harmless compromise, the neocons would create their own agenda and go about business as usual.

Ron Paul clearly isn't bound by neo-con ideals but the Republican Party is dominated by big government thought and those people will demand that they get something for their support.

As the Republican Party candidate, he would have to support the platform that is voted for at the national convention.

What silly things do people continue to spend tons of money on? by bringbacktheboogiein AskReddit

This is true. I stayed in a hotel in that region and swore there was crack in the tap water, you couldn't stop drinking it.

As an aside, if someone made a nonalcoholic vodka with exactly the same taste (hopefully with the slight burning sensation) I would probably enjoy it. But I like seltzer water and other tastes that people find odd.

[–]mation 1 point2 points ago

The ugly fact is that Ron Paul would be somewhat constrained by the platform that the Republicans adopted, but why not have two candidates that have libertarian ideals?

Hopefully the mainstream political parties would at least shift a little towards issues of personal liberty as a result, in an attempt to woo some of the voters away.

Can't see how competition of good ideas here would hurt.

Because of your chosen field, what can you "see" that other people may not? by no_front_teethin AskReddit

No, you can't. Not unless it is directly related to the work that you are doing.

what does r/PostCollapse think? What if when the collapse comes it's not that bad? by 8spdin PostCollapse

[–]mation 4 points5 points ago

A slow collapse has the potential for being 'not that bad' but I keep coming back to something that my dad used to say.

"The main difference between the Great Depression and the next one is that we have forgotten how to be poor"

This came from a man who was a teenager in the Great Depression and worked his ass off on the farm. His father did a little bit of everything to make ends meet and come out a little ahead, even had a contract from the county to lay down ashes on the road that they lived on in the winter.

Why did Tyrell seem strange when he met Roy? by arcadecabinetin Cyberpunk

[–]mation 2 points3 points ago

I've always chalked it up to an attitude that the replicants were a kind of object to Tyrell, something that he was used to dealing with in the context of a production lab.

Has anyone actually been persuaded to buy a product by a 30 sec TV commercial? For me, it's usually the opposite (I've grown to hate Old Navy purely because their commercials are so lame). by jmutter3in AskReddit

I will probably be visiting a Culver's soon because my wife likes their commercials.

I thank you for your kindness! Perhaps the downvoter was unaware that TMI stands for Three Mile Island.

From the perspective of a seven year old who was at school when the decision to evacuate was made, there are few experiences that leave you feeling so completely helpless.

I'm not sure that an evacuation would be ordered in the event that the fuel pools at Fukushima failed. Where would they go to? The logistics of clearing even a fairly small population had to be staggering, extend that to a situation where millions would be affected.

Some bean counter somewhere might determine that the long term health consequences are outweighed by the economics of such a disruption. My guess is that people would be advised to stay indoors for a time and then told that everything was okay.

The dangers of write-in votes: they may well be thrown away. by londubhawcin Libertarian

[–]mation 0 points1 point ago

Agreed, there is strong precedence that the LP can use in their favor so this problem will likely go away soon.

I think that write-ins are one way to influence the two party system that we have right now. It will be interesting to see if the Republican party platform has a few planks that directly appeal to Ron Paul's supporters in an effort to win them over.

The dangers of write-in votes: they may well be thrown away. by londubhawcin Libertarian

[–]mation 2 points3 points ago

Well, according to another article that I just read, Michigan's Secretary of State will not print Gary Johnson as the Libertarian candidate on the ballot because his name was on the Republican primary ballot.

The Libertarian Party is going to challenge this but a write-in might be the only way to vote for an acceptable candidate.
