If you only watch one North Korean accordion cover of a-ha's classic "Take On Me" today, make it this one. by scientologist2in offbeat

I've watched 17 North Korean covers of A-ha's classic 'Take On Me' today, and I don't see what is so special about this one.

Why is Buddha portrayed as over weight sometimes? by beebzzin Buddhism

[–]martoo 10 points11 points ago

As I understand it, "Buddha" means "one who is awake." There have been many of them in history. The one we Westerners incorrectly call "the Buddha" is Siddhartha Gautama.

Frankly, I think people who say that they are "protecting the children" are often projecting their discomfort onto children. Easier than admitting that you get all squeamish when you hear "bad" language.

Until 2008, sex toys were illegal in Texas. Alas, it was too late for some.

"pragmatic" has been done to death in language design.

The Outrageous Illinois Law That Makes Recording Police Arrests a Felony by anutensilin politics

[–]martoo 1 point2 points ago

I'm wondering whether this is a problem in any other Western democracy. I hear about it in the US often. Don't hear much about issues recording police in Europe and Canada.

Adam Sandler. CandyLand movie. Oh yeah. It's happening. by HitFixDanielin movies

Why? If someone offered you a bajillion dollars, you would act in whatever the fuck they wanted you to be in.

Nah. Not motivated by money that much.

I'm not an evolutionary biologist. I don't even play one on TV, but I wonder what the chances are of advanced intelligence developing in a tranquil enclosed lake. You get to intelligence through an arms race with changing ecology and predators over millions of years. Maybe we'll find some moss or something.

I'm starting to lose a little bit of faith in Adam Sandler.

A message from Shawshank by Matrinkain movies

[–]martoo 5 points6 points ago*

C'mon, r/movies, is this the type of thing we need to bitch endlessly about?

No damn it! I agree. The real problem is that the image used the word "relevancy" rather than "relevance." You don't "lose your relevancy", you "lose your relevance."

Get on the ball, people!

What did you think of The Grey (2012)? [Spoiler inside] by redditownsmylifein movies

(SPOILER)

Okay, so not having seen the after-credits bit, but having read what it is on yahoo answers, it seems more like it was a stalemate.

[–]martoo 1 point2 points ago

The ending was open for me. I left during the credits. I think that putting that resolution after the credits was a way of having it both ways. A mainstream audience wants a resolution, so you can tell them there is one. The rest of us, who can handle it, can just leave early.

I saw it today and I thought it was great. To me, it was like a mainstream Werner Herzog movie: Nature doesn't care about you, you live, you die, and by the way, nature doesn't care about you.

Neeson was very good. He should get some sort of award for this.

The message was woven tightly into the story. Great movie.

First Full Day Meditation Experience by martooin Meditation

[–]martoo[S] 4 points5 points ago

There are probably people who can offer better advice, as I'm new, but on the other hand, starting is a more recent experience for me.

I started by focusing on my breath, and then whenever I notice that my attention is wandering, I refocus on my breath. I'd start small, like 5 or 10 minutes a day.

The most important this is to not get thrown by any feeling of getting down yourself because your attention wanders. It may take a while before anything changes. Doesn't mean that you're doing it wrong, or you don't have what it takes. If those thoughts come along (and they likely will) just note them and refocus on your breath.

Expect to do this for at least a few weeks or even a month before you notice anything different. It's an investment.

Teacher sleeps in class. Student gets suspended for taking pic of it. by slumdog-properin offbeat

Very sad. A man shoots two teens (one fatally) as they assault and try to rob him. I've seen this discussed elsewhere, whats your take on it? by drdukein Buddhism

[–]martoo -1 points0 points ago

I suspect you can have that attitude and still act as the man did (I'm assuming he was attempting to wound more than kill) and was less guilty of exaggerating his importance than his attackers were.

One of my favorites Bankei Yotaku, Zen Master Quotes.. by sdiddy55in Meditation

[–]martoo 0 points1 point ago

I have faith in my ignorance.

I know that every day I will learn that something I've assumed is true, isn't true.

It keeps me away from pessimism and depressing thoughts because they are just guesses, and likely wrong.

Pema Chodron, on tonglen. {Videos} by yahhuckfinnin Meditation

[–]martoo 5 points6 points ago

A friend of mine told me about Pema a few years ago, and I picked up her book 'When Things Fall Apart'. It resonated with me. Since then, I've started meditating, but more in the Zen tradition because there is a group close to me doing that.

I wonder periodically whether I should be on the Tibetan or the Zen path. The Tibetan one, with tonglen, and various other exercises, seems to be very much more feeling and compassion-oriented whereas Zen seems to be very much about insight. It's hard to know what is right for me.
