Why do screens have a Red, Green, Blue subpixel arrangement instead of the primary colors, Red, Blue, and Yellow? by RollerCoastingin askscience

[–]manateetanam 2 points3 points ago

One could pick any three (or more) primaries at any spacing around the color wheel and combine them on a monitor to produce other colors. RGB has a three advantages, though.

  1. Red, green and blue are equidistant from each other on the color wheel. This maximizes the possible range of other colors which can be reproduced. A less evenly distributed set of primaries would result in some colors appearing muddied, dark or washed out.

  2. Three is the smallest number of primaries which can produce all other hues. Its more economical of physical space and computing resources to use three primaries.

  3. When you compare equidistant primaries in sets of three, red green and blue are the darkest. With additive color mixing (mixing with light as opposed to with dyes), it's important to start with highly saturated, but dark colors. This way, the natural "washing out" that can occur when colors of light mix is reduced.

It's possible to make a display tetrachromatic, pentachromatic, hexachromatic and so on to increase color accuracy, but that isn't available as consumer technology.

Coiling Lav Wire by JewyGnarbergsin Filmmakers

I typically remove the lav and coil it loosely on its own. The container I put it in then helps it keep contained. It's not even an expensive container. I use a small, cheap Ziplock plastic tub.

Why holes in shadows during an eclipse show images of the sun, but not at other "normal" times? by Piscator629in askscience

[–]manateetanam 2 points3 points ago

Every opening is a photographic aperture and everything lit projects an image of that thing. Weird, right? It's just that without a very small aperture (and maybe some neatly arranged lenses), the images are blurred and overlapped to the point that we simply see it as illumination, not a projected image.

A simple experiment to prove this is to use something to block out all light coming into a room, save for a fist-sized hole. You should see a blurry, upside down image of the view outside on the wall opposite the hole. Now reduce the size of the hole. As you do so, the image on the wall should become fainter and sharper. This is happening all the time with the normally large windows in your home. Every window creates an inverted and very blurry image of the outside world on the opposite wall.

You used a colander to make this photo. On a normal day, you'd see a bunch of round spots of light on the card. Each spot is in fact an image of the sun.

If you want to make this a serious experiment, do a version of the photo today, when there is no eclipse, and compare the results. Also, try it with the sun half-hidden by a building or obscured partly by the branches of a tree and compare results.

Edit: Thanks to Piscator629, I know what the image was made with.

If you want a polite way of saying "no, I won't lower my prices for you" ... by mrtomservoin Design

[–]manateetanam 0 points1 point ago

I don't mean shit work. It's the difference between a ten minute video and a five minute one, or five logo concepts and three. The quality of the work never suffers, it's the amount of work that does.

It's either that, or I give really long deadlines on cheap, but ambitious projects.

Are certain things unknowable because we don't have the intelligence to grasp them? by Moontouchin philosophy

[–]manateetanam 1 point2 points ago

Yes absolutely. Already, the sum total of human knowledge is such that no one person can adequately grasp it all (e.g. the number of potential doctorate degrees * years to achieve one doctorate > number of years in human lifespan). Any conclusions one might grasp from knowing all that humans know is beyond any one person's reach.

Why did scientists not believe in extrasolar planets before 1992? by gameofsmithin askscience

[–]manateetanam 0 points1 point ago

You're mistaking public proof (we have no proof of extrasolar planets) and private conjecture (there must be extrasolar planets). Scientists are reluctant to say something is real until they have proof.

Hundreds of years from now, we've colonized the solar system. Realistically as possible, what would it look like? by killerseamonkeyin scifi

[–]manateetanam 1 point2 points ago

I have a feeling space elevators will be 2-way devices. A flywheel or some other energy capture device will capture energy on the way down and would power the next trip on the way up. An earthbound space elevator might ship raw materials down and ship manufactured goods, food and personnel up. A space elevator on the moon might run the opposite scheme, with raw materials shipped up and food, goods and personnel shipped down.

Just a heads up: Color temperature can change for more reasons than just camera settings. A cloud crossing the sun, auto-balance settings, reading two angles differently, an unnoticed light coming on, even the angle that light hits an object.

Does it require more, or less energy to climb stairs two steps at a time as opposed to one? by Mavvikin askscience

[–]manateetanam 2 points3 points ago

clearance

two steps one at a time: 2-4cm x 2 = 4-8cm
two steps two at a time: 2-4cm x 1 = 2-4cm

Does it require more, or less energy to climb stairs two steps at a time as opposed to one? by Mavvikin askscience

[–]manateetanam 2 points3 points ago

...but you don't lift your leg exactly 20cm. You need clearance, say about 2-4cm, then theres the shock your leg absorbs as it makes the impact, the way your arms swing and so on. If you're going two steps at a time, that's 2-4cm you're saving compared to one step at a time. Definitely less energy to go two steps at a time.

Why aren't modern starving populations better able to regulate their numbers more in order to have more food per person? by nahatluin askscience

[–]manateetanam 0 points1 point ago*

Look at it from the perspective of the individual mother. In environmentally unstable times, it is best to have many offspring and hope a few are suitable to survive and maybe even care for you in your old age.

One of the central tragedies of our times is that we think interference from first world governments will help third world countries. In an ideal world, consistent, stable aid would gradually give way to a self-sustaining population. The reality the on the ground, however, is a rapidly shifting mosaic of desperation, war and poverty. Most people know nothing of what tomorrow will bring, or what skills they will need to survive there.

This unpredictability is very different from the impoverished, but slow-to-change nature of stone age life on the Australian continent.

In the third world, there is little opportunity to adapt, except to become strong and take from others, an option typically unavailable to women. The only escape route for a poor, illiterate woman is the hope that a pregnancy will bring a child which will help her. If the environment stabilized, even to an impoverished state, the population would eventually self-regulate.

Will scientists ever discover the secret of immortality? by NGC300in Futurology

[–]manateetanam 3 points4 points ago

I think the best solution isn't copying the brain, but gradually replacing it instead. Imagine if you were progressively lobotomized, with each of those parts replaced by a digital replica. If this was done over the course of dozens of treatments, the transition would become unrecognizable.

What do canon picture profiles actually do to film footage? by TheMagicHorseyin Filmmakers

[–]manateetanam 2 points3 points ago

I just colour graded a music video shot entirely in Cinestyle. It featured a wide variety of shots, from overcast, to indoor, sunny and nighttime lit and unlit. Most of the images were unacceptably noisy or banded after they got graded. Ultimately Cinestyle worked best in high contrast situations and worst on all the overcast, low contrast situations.

From my experience, I'd recommend only using Cinestyle in high-contrast run-and-gun shooting scenarios. If you're out on a sunny day, or in a nightclub or stage show situation, Cinestyle can be a life saver. Otherwise, it will end up doing more harm than good most of the time.

TTC Bus fare box not working? by essextwoin toronto

Probably the box broke mid-route and he was told to finish the route out. The don't give transfers if this happens, so some passengers still have to pay when they connect.

"If, then, riches proceed from what we earn, and if earnings are the result of our diligence and hard work, then poverty on the contrary follows from just the opposite qualities - from negligence, laziness, and tardiness" - Leon Alberti by louisprimoin philosophy

[–]manateetanam 1 point2 points ago

It's one of the things that's true provided most people don't believe it's true. When everyone is seen as a diligent, hard worker worker, the value of diligence and hard work goes down and something else must take its place (showboating, fame-whoring, etc...).

In most workplaces today, diligence and productivity are a requirement for employment. Since people are fired when they fall below a certain threshold, they learn to appear as productive as possible. This masks actual productivity. Being in management is an uncommon position of authority, so there's also incentive to retain a management position despite the toll on the business... and so on...

The statement does still hold true for entrepreneurs, provided your business concept is a sound one.
