Guessing Manual Settings? by benjgvpsin photography

[–]m1ss1ontomars2k4 1 point2 points ago

Wat...they're all multiples of the square root of 2...what mnemonic (pneumatic means gas-powered) do you need?

EDIT: To make it more clear, that means every other one is doubled. So 11 is double 5.6, 5.6 is double 2.8, 2.8 is double 1.4. 16 is double 8, 8 is double 4, 4 is double 2. So if you can just remember two that are next to each other (1.4 and 2 are easy, since 1.42 is about 2) you can compute anything else. Neighbors are separated by 1.4, because, as I said, it's about the square root of 2.

No response from touchscreen? [Samsung Galaxy Ace] by Ian_Dessin AndroidQuestions

[–]m1ss1ontomars2k4 0 points1 point ago

Sometimes I have that problem with my phone. Capacitative touchscreens work by expecting a conductive object to touch them, which is usually good, until your hands are so dry they aren't conductive enough anymore, or you're wearing gloves, etc. I missed most of the lectures on capacitance in my introductory EE class, so I'm not good on the fundamentals, but it also appears that sometimes when I put my phone down and try to use it by only touching the screen it doesn't work either; I have to pick up the phone to get it to understand me.

I'm pretty sure they sell that stuff at Bel-Air Camera, but that's in Westwood.

Nikon Question: Mounting a G lens on an F body. by owlmlettein photography

The little lever that the tab on the aperture ring connects to. On my TC they squish the weather sealing.

But it has no way of knowing the minimum or maximum aperture or the current aperture, so it cannot set the aperture.

For the love of God, why did I buy an HP Photo-smart printer? by Darkstar68in hardware

[–]m1ss1ontomars2k4 2 points3 points ago

Here are some laser printers I've had good experiences with:

  • HP LaserJet 5L--the rollers wear out after a few years, and you'll have to replace them. Actually, don't get this printer, because it's slow. Also, the only ones you'll find are going to be really old and you'll have to replace the rollers as soon as you get it.
  • Brother HL-2140--standard single-sided b&w laser; pretty awesome. The "demo" cartridge has an optical window that you have to cover up to squeeze out some extra pages
  • Brother HL-2270DW--standard duplex b&w laser with wifi and ethernet. Really an awesome printer. Wifi is reliable too.

Here are some color inkjet printers I've had good experiences with:

  • HP DeskJet F380 AIO--It prints (in color!). It scans. It doesn't fuck you over on ink. It's an awesome printer/cartridge system for general documents; it can estimate ink level based on how much you've printed but doesn't actually check it or prevent you from printing, which means you can keep refilling until the heads clog (heads are integrated into the cartridge on HP printers). So yes, you can print your document out in green instead of black if you really have to, which I did once. You can print with "0%" ink remaining. You can do whatever you want.

Actually, I only have 1 inkjet that I liked.

Now that you mention it, that makes sense. On the other hand, I've got a teleconverter here that begs to differ...

Nikon Question: Mounting a G lens on an F body. by owlmlettein photography

[–]m1ss1ontomars2k4 0 points1 point ago

Are you aware that you will get extremely severe vignetting with that lens? It's meant for DX.

Anyway, that lens' smallest aperture is f/22 at 18mm and f/36 at 200mm, so that's what you'll get on every picture.

The camera has no CPU contacts, so it has no way of communicating with the lens, so it will be unable to set the aperture at all.

Lastly, you'll probably find that the rubber weather sealing on the lens collides with some of the levers on the camera body. Not a big deal, but it's kind of irritating. The bigger problem is that those levers are used for the camera's auto-exposure modes.

Saw mention of a "photographers rule of thumb," was wondering if it's true by somechineseguyin photography

Therefore any perspective distortion caused by a shorter focal length doesn't magically disappear when you put it on a crop sensor body.

Well, you're forced to cause it to disappear, because you'd have to move farther away from the subject to get the subject to be the same size.

All Nikon SLRs are F-mount. You'll have to be more specific.

Anyway, if you examine how the aperture control works manually, you should find that on incompatible SLRs, the aperture will close as far as possible (like f/22 or f/16, depending on the lens) when a picture is taken, but should remain wide open otherwise.

Question about querying a large db with autocomplete results? by the_win androiddev

[–]m1ss1ontomars2k4 0 points1 point ago

In regular SQL, you can typically do

SELECT * FROM wherever LIKE whatever LIMIT n

where n is some number of entries you want to limit it to, like maybe 10 or something, and the query gets re-executed for every letter the user types in.

Has anyone used the MATLAB Distributed Computing Server or the Sun Grid Engine? by Ocranin matlab

I used SGE because that's all we had. It worked well enough, but you need to learn some shell scripting to use it, apparently. Wasn't a problem for me; I dunno about you.

Storing Data FTP/MySQL by irock97in androiddev

[–]m1ss1ontomars2k4 0 points1 point ago

startActivityForResult does something else entirely. If you want to download text from a server and display it locally, the easiest solution is to just set up a regular web server (which will be just as insecure as FTP unless you use HTTPS, requiring a certificate you pay for) or actually use SFTP, which could be more complicated. You may want to consider learning about REST and creating a RESTful API for your program to use.

How is my RAID controller allowing me to create RAID 6 with 3 drives? by milacekraisein sysadmin

[–]m1ss1ontomars2k4 2 points3 points ago

Think about what RAID 6 actually means: it means that if any 2 drives fail, you can resurrect the array. Obviously you can't do this with only 2 drives, but you can do it with 3 drives.

XML Parsing isn't updating the website? by rubsnickin learnprogramming

[–]m1ss1ontomars2k4 1 point2 points ago

Well, the jQuery executes a GET request to /statecity.xml. Do you have a /statecity.xml on your server? Are you even on a server? You should use things like Firebug (a plugin for Firefox), Chrome Web Inspector (built-in), Opera Dragonfly (built-in), etc. to see what's going wrong; they all have an "Errors" pane that you can use.

First, are you talking about bits or bytes? Don't use a non-standard designation like mB and except people to know what you mean. It's Mb (for megabit) or MB (for megabyte) or MiB (for mebibyte). Did you simply not capitalize MB properly? Or did you swap the capitalization on Mb?
