Thomas Jefferson on religious tolerance by Terran_it_upin atheism

What matters is that we treat each other with kindness and respect

I think you may be in the wrong subreddit my friend, there's very little kindness and respect for those who are different here.

I want to make it so that my sister can play on my Steam account while I'm away in China for a month, so I made another account on my computer. I've hit a bit of a snag, though... by Giorlando_Calrissianin techsupport

The games probably belong to your user and/or system. Change the permissions of the steam folder (the whole steam folder, there should be a checkbox for 'apply changes to subfolders') and give your sister r/w access to everything. if that doesn't work give her 'full control' access.

Why are we even still using file extensions? Linux does a fine job of figuring out the file type without them (I assume from the header or meta data), this is one of those areas where the consumer OSes are laughably behind the times

Windows ME (the version I had on my first computer - now do you feel old?)

I started out on DOS 5 and Windows 3.0, so no.

I went to court yesterday and had to place my hand on the Bible. by darkescoin atheism

[–]lupistm 1 point2 points ago

What's the difference between just saying "I won't lie" and saying it while touching a Bible?

Because a lot of people will take it a lot more seriously if the bible is involved. I'm all for exploiting people's beliefs if it gets us more honest testimony in court.

Hi reddit. Someone stole my money and I have it on camera and you can see the face of the thief. First off is stealing shit that isn't yours wrong? And should I contact the police? Btw does anyone else know how to react to blindingly obvious situations or am I just a fucking retarded gimp? by BruceStarkin circlejerk

[–]lupistm 0 points1 point ago

First off is stealing shit that isn't yours wrong?

The depends. If you're stealing from a big evil corporation or a person who I've decided has too much money (so anyone with more than I have) then stealing is fine.

You may be an atheist, but you don't need to be *that* atheist. Stop it, you're making us look bad. [FB] by le1cain atheism

[–]lupistm 0 points1 point ago

My point is if they're bad it doesn't really matter if they're religious, they're just plan bad.

But some still try to get creationism taught in our schools and deny equal rights to all members of our society. This is why any of this even matters. You can't just ignore the bad policies that are religiously founded because you are afraid of violating their religious freedom. If they are bad, they're bad. Like we already agreed upon.

I don't think we agree. I advocate fighting the policies, you advocate fighting the religion.

You're not at all addressing my response to your claim that "it's not my business" what others' beliefs are.

Because it's not. If you're going to go around being a cheerleader for atheism and trying to convert people how are you any better than the jehova's witnesses knocking on your door?

You're not at all addressing my response to your claim that "it's not my business" what others' beliefs are. If you feel like continuing our discussion please tell me how religion in the United States isn't my business given the amount of religious belief present in our government, schools, and social/civil rights debates.

Bad policy is bad policy regardless of what sort of philosophy inspired it. Public policy is certainly your business, nobody's saying you shouldn't fight against politicians who write bad laws. Fighting them for their religion alone is not much better than bigotry.

it is almost impossible to have completely separate private and publics beliefs that differ in content unless you have very little integrity.

So what? We've already established that very few Christians believe or follow every single sentence in the bible, I don't see anyone in congress lobbying that adulterers should be publicly stoned. Shit, Obama claims to be a Christian, and he just made a very strong statement in favor of gay marriage. It's because he's more than just a Christian, he's an individual, a human being. One that apparently skipped Leviticus.

[–]lupistm 0 points1 point ago

Seems to me you were making a blanket statement about people who claim to be Christians, and how the majority of them aren't "real" Christians at all.

Basically, if someone says "I am a Christian/Jew/Pagan/Whatever" it's none of my business and I'll keep my mouth shut about it.

If someone says "I am Christian/Muslim/atheist/Whatever and you should be too" then he is making it my business.

It's an important distinction, but an easy one to make.

[–]lupistm 0 points1 point ago

It doesn't matter if it's "correct", point is it's not my business, or yours, what they believe or claim to believe.
