Riding your bike home drunk fukkin' sucks. by shitfacedpaintingsin cripplingalcoholism

[–]luminairex 4 points5 points ago

Tonight I had to walk up a 200m/600ft hill in the dark, blind and quite happily lit. I would have pulled a latt and just slept in a tree, but there were fucking spiders everywhere. Somehow, I made it home

Cheers fucker

How could I buy a house on a Greek Island? by userNameNotLongEnougin IWantOut

[–]luminairex 0 points1 point ago

Can't help you with the immigration part, but I thought I'd offer some advice related to your move, coming from a guy that was in a similar situation before I moved to New Zealand.

Sell the car, you aren't going to need it on an island. Not that you'd want to pay to ship it there anyway - you need to own the title free and clear just to export it. You might owe more than the car is worth if you sell it - in that case, get a loan and apply what you were paying towards the car/insurance/maintenance to the outstanding debt, then pocket those savings once the loan is paid off. Those first few months of paying phantom debt will suck, but you'll wonder why you didn't do it sooner!

Homebrewing Question.... by captainjerry215in Homebrewing

It really depends on what you're brewing. I haven't smelled anything undesirable after 1.5 years of doing this, though there are many styles I haven't tried.

Christchurch, New Zealand badly needs skilled builders on a temporary basis, since pretty much everything fell over during last year's quake. If you don't mind the ground shaking a bit, there's heaps of work for you down there.

Learn to curse properly. You have to use the word cunt as a term of endearment. It takes some getting used to, but you can start with extreme examples of humanity. Charity workers and people that go out of their way to help you are good cunts, while people with a special circle of Hell reserved for them would be bad cunts (or muppets, fuckwits, tossers, etc).

Is ASU a respectable school for Computer Science? by physloop24in ASU

[–]luminairex 1 point2 points ago

Two weeks on the South Island and one more in Wellington!

Really though, I lived in AZ all my life and the Phoenix market for web developers was a bit shit in 2009/2010. I just wanted a change, and software developers are on the long-term shortage list in NZ so it was relatively straightforward to obtain full residency. I'm well into my second year here and I maintain a government website that sees over 5 million hits annually. The experience alone has been invaluable.

What are the most affordable places outside of the US to retire and how much money can you live off of? by somevelvetmorningin Frugal

[–]luminairex 2 points3 points ago

/r/iwantout - make some friends!

If you're looking to depend on Social Security, be aware of the numerous hoops you'll have to jump through to claim your checks.

Also be aware that as a US citizen or green-card holder, you're obligated to report your foreign bank accounts and file your taxes on your global income. It doesn't matter if you pay taxes to the local government or you owe the IRS nothing - you still need to file with, and possibly pay taxes to, the US government in addition to your local one. It gets especially complicated when you start dabbling in real estate and capital gains.

Good luck!

Is ASU a respectable school for Computer Science? by physloop24in ASU

[–]luminairex 1 point2 points ago

I used my computer science degree to move to New Zealand. I neither know nor care how respectable the degree is, and neither have any of my employers or freelance clients. The label is irrelevant - what matters is the knowledge you take from the program, which in ASU's case was very satisfactory

I feel your pain, I'm in a poorly insulated house at the top of Mt. Vic - I get the full brunt of the southerlies along with a couple hundred meters of altitude. Go to Bunnings or the Warehouse and pick up a rubber hottie bottle for $5. Fill with boiling/near-boiling water (based on your own comfort) and stick it under your blankets on the couch/bed/whatever.

Also, get those crap faux-mink blankets from the Warehouse. They run sales on them all the time, I just picked one up a couple weeks ago for $30.

My software start up suffered an unfathomable loss today... by benjaminspowellin newzealand

[–]luminairex 1 point2 points ago

Sorry for your loss, I just set this up to backup my repos to a Dreamhost account. Hope this helps someone avoid a loss like this!

1) Make a directory called git in the home folder of your remote host

2) Generate a public key on your source machine if you haven't already

3) Append the public key you just generated to the authorized_keys file on your remote host. Example:

cat .ssh/id_rsa.pub | ssh username@offsitehost.com 'cat >> .ssh/authorized_keys'

4) Run crontab -e on your source machine and add the following command (fill in with your own repo) to run your backup every night at midnight:

0 0 * * * tar -czvf /tmp/repo.tar.gz /path/to/git/projects && scp /tmp/repo.tar.gz username@offsitehost.com:git/.

Seriously, if they have to spend it at all, it should at least support local business. Instead, they're taxing those businesses to fund overseas competitors.

Even if you just clone a git repository onto a thumb drive and put it in your pocket, you're vastly better off than keeping everything in one place. You can just as easily run a cronjob or scheduled task nightly to clone into your Dropbox folder - it's better than nothing!

[–]luminairex 0 points1 point ago

Wow, that sucks man. You've just reminded me that I'm not keeping backup copies of any of my own source code outside of my home - if I got burgled I'd be in the same boat! Can you use the production copy of what you had on your website? It may be out of date, but you're not entirely up shit creek if you can start over with that.

What countries have the best doctors? by refulgentin IWantOut

[–]luminairex -1 points0 points ago

"The best" care is entirely subjective. The public medical care I receive in New Zealand is adequate for my needs, but who am I to say it's the best? In an actual medical emergency, you take the care that's available to you, and I'd rather have any doctor than the best doctor - "the best" in that situation is probably in the United States, but how have you paid for the care you're receiving?

New tax for those renouncing US Citizenship by fauxpasgrapherin IWantOut

[–]luminairex 0 points1 point ago

Eduardo Saverin did not dodge his tax. He paid his taxes and settled up with the IRS, using the rules that they set themselves. I can't see how he's "dodging taxes" when it's the IRS's policy to tax assets as if they are sold on the day they renounce. This idiot is completely ignoring the actual problem of the IRS being required by American law to make stupid financial decisions. The worst part about this is that it will probably pass before any of the 4 million expatriates out there has a chance to contact their senator, who for the most part ignore them anyway. This is the very definition of taxation without representation.

This exemplifies everything that's wrong with America. Planning is purely reactionary and laws are hastily passed without even pretending they understand all the consequences. For example, this law will have no practical effect because Saverin has probably fled the country with all of his capital and actually cannot be taxed - there are 4 million other people that aren't that lucky.

Can any redditor solve this challenge? Please. by The-Great-Jebusin DIY

[–]luminairex 0 points1 point ago

A q-tip with nail polish remover or paint thinner on it should dissolve the glue. As for getting the bit out, have you tried taking it to the Apple Store? They might relish in the challenge of removing it for you because they're nice guys, or they might tell you what it costs to fix. Never hurts to ask!

Other things to try:

  • Tweezers
  • Lockpicks
  • Forceps
  • Needlenose pliers
