Brand new Sysadmin - trying hard but need advice by GlassMuffinsin sysadmin

[–]lugh 1 point2 points ago

If you do not have a need for windows on the desktop and will have either a Windows AD or a Samba 4 AD (not production ready), you could go with Linux on desktops and use Likewise-open to join them to the domain and give them easy access to network shares.

If you are going with a Samba 3 PDC you are better off using Windows on the desktop as getting Likewise and Samba 3 to work together is a major PITA but you could use PAM to get similar functionality.

Firewalls I'll give another vote to PFSense.

For remote software updates on Windows Desktops, PDQDeploy works quite well (though I'm sure there are better). PDQInventory will let you remotely review what software is on the Desktops (among other tasks)

To monitor the network look at either Snorby of Security-Onion.

Need some advice on implementing firewall and IDS by stealthmodeactivein sysadmin

Not easy, but you can take some of the initial donkey work out of it with Security Onion or Snorby. But as you said maintaining it is the hard part.

this is not really privacy related, I'd suggest posting it to /r/andsec and /r/commandline where it may be more suited.

Question: Instead of wiping the data on my HDD before throwing it away or selling it, can I just encrypt the whole disk with truecrypt? by pkiyanin privacy

[–]lugh 0 points1 point ago

It will accomplish the same thing but make sure you set truecrypt to securely wipe the drive as it encrypts. As for speed, you'd probably find it quicker just to wipe the drive, especially if your drive supports ATA erasing commands (Secure Erase)

As long as you've learned from any mistakes AND taken a backup of the config, then no.

Anyone Tried This? What did your bandwidth usage look like? by number12and35in onions

[–]lugh 1 point2 points ago

ssh on to it (during setup you should have got a .pem file)

ssh -i tor-cloud-servers.pem ubuntu@yourserverip

Once logged on run

sudo -u debian-tor arm

This will give you a curses based monitoring tool (arm)

What did your bandwidth usage look like?

I don't have figures to hand but I'm on the free year and have yet to break any soft caps that would incur a charge from Amazon.

By default you are set up as a bridge so traffic will be lower than a regular node, as you are only helping those who are configured to use bridge access, and it will be even lower if you select the private bridge option as only those people you tell about it will use it.
