41% of Americans identify as "pro-choice," a record-low in Gallup polling by es-335in Foodforthought

I pity how simple (read: childish) your views are.

Can a man's ideas be separated from his deeds? What if he's murderous and maybe insane, but insightful? What if the man is the Unabomber? by anupakkihalin TrueTrueReddit

The generally accepted rules of war are hard to apply to something like the issues Kaczynski addressed because it's not a traditional war. Some civilians in places of power can do more damage than any individual soldier. When the war is fundamentally different the rules have to change with it. I think his problem was not going after anybody high up enough to actually be culpable. His targets weren't exactly the most effective. Going after computer store owners and graduate students is a lot less justifiable than going after energy company CEO's and corrupt politicians.

I have an interview at a movie rental store today, and i need a list of good classic movies in all categories so I standout when he asks about my love of movies. by GodsLittleAtheistin movies

[–]louderthanbombs 2 points3 points ago

if you have to ask Reddit the day of your interview what movies you should say you like then you probably shouldn't get the job.

Sidenote: I'm just amazed a video store is both open and hiring.

That review is exactly why I don't read amateur movie blogs. It's all about buzzwords, references and sounding "writerly". blech.

Long article in NY Times business section on student loan debt. My question: why would anyone borrow $120,000 to go to Ohio Northern University? "When I graduate, I'm going to owe $900 a month. No one told me that." by gouge-awayin TrueReddit

Public school gets a lot of flak because overall they're horrible. You're anecdotal experience didn't do anything to disprove that. I took AP World History, AP Psych, AP English Writing, AP English Lit and AP Gov but that doesn't mean that American public school in general is shitty. It just means I had a decent experience. And I sure as hell didn't have the opportunity at an economics class. It's hardly common.

And you can tell when someone is ordering for the first time when they get a large fry. The small fry overflows out of the cup into the bag.

Bleck. My tastes in food are way too simple to appreciate something like that. And the hipness sounds nauseating to boot. I love going to Five Guys (I live in Northern VA) but that's as gourmet as I could possibly go for a burger. I'm really more of a Chipotle addict myself.

Hayden Christensen in Shattered Glass.

He plays a journalist who elaborately fabricates stories for a magazine until he's eventually found out. It's based on a true story.

George Lucas's writing/directing really fucked his career. And Jumper.

I actually really enjoy intentional anachronistic choices in period films, and it's trailer so all the more reason to not care.

But if I had to pick something more appropriate I'd go with:

Charles Mingus - 'Boogie Stop Shuffle' (1959)

Reconstructing a left-wing life through the archaeology of books - The Caledonian Mercury by viviennewestworldin books

Great read.

It hit kind of close to home as I've wondered the fate of my library recently. I've got around 900 books, take notes in most, I subscribe to the anarchist/leftist traditions and have a one-year-old son. I wonder if he'll throw out the books I leave him. He has his own stack I've been collecting for when he starts reading. Will he enjoy it as much as I do?

...I just looked behind me to see him playing with his Sesame Street ABC's book. I think he'll be fine.

I normally sort by topic- then either chronologically, general to particular, or by dimensions (big to small). But I moved a lot last year and have yet to reorganize. Here's the shelves~ by JEDDIJin bookshelf

[–]louderthanbombs 1 point2 points ago

I organize my nonfiction the same way.

I'm fascinated by liberation theology, subversive orthodoxy etc. I went radically left after leaving the Catholic Church and now I've wishlist-ed those books.

A lot of great stuff there. Glad to see another nonfiction fan.

I love your shelf! At first I thought those were all doodles until I noticed the pattern. Very cool.

Eric Schlosser (the guy who did Fast Food Nation) has a book called Reefer Madness: Sex, Drugs and Cheap Labor on the American Black Market. It's a great read.

Also, look into Misha Glenny's McMafia. It's about the intersection of organized crime/the black market and globalization and open markets.

Trailer for Soderbergh's new film, "Magic Mike," starring Channing Tatum. by dickfartistin movies

Judging by the fact that I had to resort to the search bar to find anyone talking about this movie, I have a feeling the only people on here excited about it are us Soderbergh fanboys.
