Illustrator Question - Extrude & Bevel by BearSheriffin graphic_design

[–]lordofthejungle 2 points3 points ago

Post screencaps. Sounds like a problem from when the effect converts the gradient to a blend/bitmap. You may want to create separate vectors from the resultant effects and add the colour by pasting the vectors-with-gradients over the effected text and setting them to color in their Appearance settings.

Need some tips on what to add. by topmassin graphic_design

Well we've got to watch out for this stuff, otherwise content weakens severely in here and I don't want free design being given to non-designers in the guise of a critique request because it's just not fair to designers who've worked hard to gain their knowledge.

As for your advice: Do your whole name in the type that you have Mced in. It looks like Meed. It makes no sense as it is and you haven't designed anything to make it clearer that doesn't make it uglier. You say you want to stay away from anything too Minecraft yet the name is Minecrafted, so you haven't given yourself much bloody choice. Disco can do what he wants because he's not cashing in on another brand in his name.

As it is, it is barely a logo because it tells the viewer nothing at all. If you wanted to lightly reference Minecraft in some way you could use a pixellated texture inside the letters. That would be subtle and delightful - delight being your goal.

Otherwise the core of your issue is your name and you'd have to change it or give yourself a media-company/user name to avoid it. Minecrafted could be a subtitle to this, in which case, don't do it as wordart squeezed between the letters.

Maybe you should have actually followed some of the advice you were given here. It's worse now.

Need some tips on what to add. by topmassin graphic_design

[–]lordofthejungle 1 point2 points ago*

Kind of fair though. OP took some okay lettering and shoehorned the extended word into that lettering in a crappy-looking wordart-non-solution and is left with a bit of a PoS. Even after getting about $50 worth of free design consultancy out of mercurycreative. Bleh kind of sums that up quite well. What's he supposed to say?

"Hey, dumbass. Do the whole word in the style of Mced ya lazy moron."

The OP has already been told that. If he doesn't want to go to the work of doing that I don't know why he came here for advice in the first place, other than to show off how he can make 4 letters look okay. This whole post reeks of spam for his channel.

I can't draw and shade tear ducts... any tips? by pajaimersin ArtCrit

[–]lordofthejungle 1 point2 points ago

Moar contrast. Seriously, where the eye meets the tear duct should be darker on the eye. You also need to make the fold in the tear duct slightly darker, and then highlight the different sections of the duct.

Thank you very much Zoeloebean, I liked your Duchamp-esque approach too. :)

[–]lordofthejungle 2 points3 points ago

Well it's borrowing from that whole Treasure of Sierra Madre / Indiana Jones / Uncharted vibe with just a smidgeon of Minecraft. I just liked the crevasse style appearance and thought it had to be done. Didn't put very much time or thought into it. Looking at it now, i didn't need to go so dark. Thanks for the compliment, it's as big as the photo I worked from.

Ron Paul mentioned in the Debate the other night that having the government get involved in School Loans and Mortgages caused the price of both Education and Homes to increase. Is there any evidence to back up this claim? by kingvitamanin PoliticalDiscussion

[–]lordofthejungle 1 point2 points ago

I don't think anyone who ends up in r/PoliticalDiscussion should be confused by him, they're already in the top 1% of reddit visitors and should be able to tell trolls on sight. That said I thought this was r/politics when I first read his comment so the trolling was more commendable in that light.

I found it only takes a pause for comprehension to realise his initial comment is a joke. He obstinately refuses to recognise the context of supply and demand and applies it to employment. Yet he says at the end of his comment that economics is all right-wing bullshit.

This means he at least has a basic understanding of economic theory (the situation being described was capitalism) and yet most people that have made it to here would know that the study of economics encompasses left and right wing theory. The contradiction is pretty blatant I thought and can only be explained by irony. So even if it's not funny to you, i found it pretty funny. Even though this isn't the place to laugh at it, r/worstof is and that's where I came from.

I'm sorry for the pollution of your discussion by all of this though.

Aaaahhhh, ya see, that's my bad. I had assumed it was r/politics. Still, the people responding to him with counterpoints seem a little oblivious.

This is some sweet trolling. It's obvious the guy entirely comprehends everything that is being said to him by the way he twists it and balla1ap is still none the wiser.

I'm baffled by how many people just blindly downvoted him. So many people deserve an F minus in irony comprehension.

It's right-wing bullshit pretending to be science.

That was genius.

Not really, in that Romantic Comedies used to be higher cinema with less "celebs" and more Actors and scripts and Oscars and whatnots. Just ask Woody Allen, he can explain it.

Ah cool. Yeah, if i'm sending the file to the client, I strip out the client name and project number. If it's a final proof, I add proof or whatever. It's easy enough for me to follow and I just have one colleague and an intern, so it's my call really.

Please, I need some advice from professional Logo Artists. by Keep_Scrollingin graphic_design

[–]lordofthejungle 4 points5 points ago

I'd say there's a future for you, of course. You need to get work, but i'd start with doing web icons for people and iconographic illustration (posters maybe?), that sort of thing.

Identity (Logo) design is a packed market and is very difficult to do successfully. Effectively you have to be able to go to a business with the confidence to tell them your design will improve their bottom line, and you've to charge a lot of money for that. The reason being, most businesses don't just need a logo, they need an identity. That's colour scheme, font choices and brand guidelines. So if you're designing a logo, say you charge $300 (way too cheap for a logo), do you think that logo will make back the $300 your client spent on it?

Your design should make back more, it should raise their profile, bring in money. To do that you need to be in a position to tell businesses what they need in their given market. At 17 it's hard to imagine you being taken seriously enough or having enough experience with market places to do this correctly.

You should indeed be practicing, and doing anything you can. You need to be practicing Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and Indesign. The first for photos, images, textures anything of a fixed resolution. Illustrator is a must know for logo design. Indesign is used for text layout on anything more text heavy than a poster.

You're not making a mistake at all, you're young enough to fulfill your aspirations quite early, but you have a lot to learn between now and being a "logo designer". If you can design logos, you should already be able to design a lot of other things.

Sorry this is a messy response, if you've any questions, shoot.

Right on mate. I do project numbers and versions in the filename: <Client Name>-<Project Number>-<Project Type>-<Spec>-<Version(number)&Revision(by letter)>.<Filetype> e.g. Reddit-0001-Pamphlet-DL-001A.indd

I also keep an R&D, Resources and Print/Publish Folders within each project folder.
