Oh yeah - that squirrel scene was smoldering!

I can remember getting the Disney Channel on cable when it launched and furiously recording cartoons onto VHS.

Fun things on your commute or general travels about the city by lugubriousmoronin boston

[–]logrus101 3 points4 points ago

I try to figure out tricks like this too.

There are a number of intersections with zero delay between the crosswalk signals in either direction (e.g. Coolidge Corner, Central Square). If you want to end up on the diagonally opposite corner, it never pays to try to cross the street before the big intersection. You can always start crossing in one of the directions you want without waiting.

When taking the T at Park Street, Green line, my stop is off either C or D. I try to wait halfway between where the two trains stop and then rush to whichever comes first.

As a software engineer, I can tell you that this drives me nuts.

Sure, the technology is there. Blizzard can most likely code up the behavior you're talking about.

The issue is with use-cases. They're trying to make everyone happy: the pros and the casual gamers. The pros vocally asked for a "ignore" feature and they got one. Now the casual users want some mind reading from the software to do the right thing.

A lot of features boil down to "I really want the software to guess what I want to have happen, then do it". This is fine, but it requires a lot of feedback from the user base to the devs.

Just for you:

The blue color only comes out at certain angles, so it is hard to capture on camera. The counters are great, but they are a lot like glass - so putting a plate or glass down makes a tink sound. They are very similar to our granite counters at our old house.

Brookline just paid $1M to install multi-space parking meters...and now wants to remove them because residents don't like walking back to their cars by ju66l3rin boston

[–]logrus101 3 points4 points ago

I hear your points, and they are all valid.

It is difficult to explain the frustration of finding-and-walking-to a pay station on a street, but at least for me, I found it rage-inducing.

A much better system would be: Provide a free smartphone application that would let me pay for parking in a specified zone electronically. Tie the payment to my license plate. When the meter maid comes around, they can use a camera to OCR the license plate and see if the person has paid.

As a non-phone payment method, use the multi-space kiosks. I'd be ok with that.

[–]logrus101 4 points5 points ago

I live in Brookline and have used both the old and new meters.

The new meters make sense in a large parking lot, where it is clear where you're supposed to go to pay and get the receipt to put on your car. I liked the convenience of being able to use a credit card and adding a large amount of time.

On the street, these multi-space meters were a pain in the ass. It was never clear where the nearest kiosk was. After finding it, walking fifty feet down the street to pay, then walk back to your car, then go on to wherever you were going was an annoyance. It doesn't sound like a big deal, but if it is raining/snowing or meant walking in the complete opposite direction - the single space meters seem like a better option.

The mystery surrounding the source of the highest-energy particles known in the Universe has grown deeper. The particles, known as cosmic rays, can show up with energies a million times higher than the biggest particle accelerators on Earth can produce. by DrJulianBashirin science

[–]logrus101 54 points55 points ago

You mentioned that the speed of the proton was approximately C*(1-(10-27 )). That seemed really fast to me.

Using the formula for particles traveling at relativistic speeds: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special_relativity

The Lorentz factor (gamma) for this proton would be about 2.2 * 1013

The kinetic energy would be: K = (gamma - 1) * m * c2

K = 3.3 * 103 Joules = 3300 Joules

A thrown baseball has about 250 Joules of kinetic energy.

These single protons have more energy than baseballs? Did I screw up some math?
