I have the same speakers, with the original PA head (it sucks real bad). Got them when my dad moved and didn't want to haul them. The speakers actually do sound pretty nice with a guitar coming through them though.

How common are bass tube amps? by fry_in Bass

[–]liquidcola 0 points1 point ago

Most pre-amp tubes are rated in the 10,000+ hours of usage range before failure (that's about 5 hours/week for nearly 40 years).

Well, if you've got a problem with your tube amp, it's probably not going to be the pre-amp tube.

Power tubes, because they're subjected to higher voltage tend to burn up faster, but someone who knows their amp should be able to tell when they're starting to go and swap them out at the appropriate time.

Burn up faster = not reliable. Swapping out parts = not reliable. Okay, I think maybe we're looking at the word "reliable" a little differently here. Sure, a properly serviced and maintained tube amp is probably nearly as likely to make it through a gig as a solid state or digital amp. In that sense, the reliability factor can be close (provided the venue you're playing in has a good clean power source), but if we're talking reliability on a grander scale, the solid state head wins. For the most part, you can rely on it to work for years without tearing its guts out and replacing stuff. For your average kid in a garage band going to guitar center and buying an amp, who wouldn't know a vacuum tube from a light bulb, a solid state amp is going to be the better choice in terms of reliability. For them reliability means it "just works".

That being said, I love me some tube amps (and am envious of you and your amps which are older than you). Also, solid state amps are not bullet-proof. I'm definitely not saying that. Capacitors fail, transformers fail, and guitar players fail in their attempts not to spill beer on your amp... But power tubes fail far more often, and that's all I guess I'm trying to say.

Either way, to each his own, and may the great fictitious bass gods shine down upon all with a deafening low rumble of good tone and proverbial punchiness.

So basically, it's okay to write about whatever people want to write about, and you're against people on here telling others what they should or should not post...

UNLESS it's someone trying to voice their opinion on what kind of posts they'd rather see?

Isn't your post doing the exact thing you're bitching about?

Hahaha. It's the ketchup that scares me. You should be able to find a recipe online that doesn't use ketchup.

I hate the word "gamer" by Error52in truegaming

What's wrong with being an obsessed Cheetos-munching neckbeard who stays up until 3am every night by their self and rarely bathes? Besides the rarely bathing part? :-P

"I like working on my dirt bike and project car; did a minor restoration on that, enjoyvideogames, play guitar in a stoner/groove rock band, recently got back into piano..." etc

So would you say you're a gear head, biker, guitarist, and a pianist? Is it okay to assign those labels, but not the gamer label? Surely there are "connotations" that come along with those things that aren't always positive. But it takes a real small minded person to proscribe such things to someone they know despite evidence to the contrary.

Also, does anyone ever refer to someone as a gamer outside of the context of talking about games or that persons specific hobbies? I could see:

"Frank is a really interesting guy. He's a kickboxer, a painter, a gamer, and a pilot on the weekends."

but,

"I'm going to McDonald's with Walt, Judy, Frank (the gamer), and John."

Does that actually ever happen?

Is anyone who has tried this able to comment on the online multi-player? If I buy it and my friends buy it, can we play against each other online, or are they all random match-ups?

Also, lets say we want a three player game, me on my computer, and two friends on a single computer, is that possible?

This might be awesome, considering a lot of the people I game with live an hour and a half away.

How common are bass tube amps? by fry_in Bass

[–]liquidcola 0 points1 point ago

Tubes are fragile and wear out over time. That means, flat out, that a tube amp is less reliable. Regardless of how easy to replace and acquire the tubes are. You are more likely to have a tube amp conk out on you in the middle of a gig. You are also more likely to show up to a gig and find that you broke a tube during transport.

Don't get me wrong, I fucking love tube amps, I'm just saying there is a little more risk involved when it comes to reliability.

And yes, you do see 30+ year old tube amps that are functioning perfectly, but how many times do you think they've had to be serviced in that 30+ years? Compare that with a solid state head from the same time. I have a solid state Peavey head from 1978 that I can guarantee has not had a single repair since it was built. Now, it doesn't sound nearly as cool as a tube amp from the same era, but that was always the trade off.

[–]liquidcola 9 points10 points ago

They sound pretty awesome, especially when driven . The problem is, an all-tube bass amp is going to weigh a shit-ton more than a solid-state or digital amp, and is going to be a lot less reliable.

And nowadays, they're probably a lot less common, but you can find vintage ones.
