What are some ingenious ideas you've had for inventions, that turned out to be more non-genious? I'll start by TheMmyein AskReddit

adds a lot of weight and expense for an item that is already heavy and an industry that doesn't give a damn about its employees.

I had an idea for a gyroscopically balanced waiter's tray.

The Politics of Pedestrian Safety. How much more safety for pedestrians can motorists handle? by kolemboin PoliticalDiscussion

Cars should be light weight, fluffy, and have 3 feet of padding at all times. It'll be so much fun! Drunk driving will be encouraged!

Yeah, a friend of mine just showed up with one of those last night. (guess it was a gag-gift to her)

ELI5: The difference between evolution and natural selection. by Tmeessemanin explainlikeimfive

[–]limbodog 12 points13 points ago

They are indeed very similar. Natural selection is one of the causes of evolution.

evolution is the change of a species over time as mutations occur and are adopted by newer generations.

Natural selection is the process by which this occurs in nature. an example would be where a species that is being regularly eaten by a larger predator evolves a new trait which helps it hide from its predator, like camouflage, or the ability to climb trees quickly or burrow.

The difference is that natural selection is not the only way a species can evolve. Dog breeding in order to get the desired traits is also evolution, but it can be conducted by human dog owners. Humans can also carefully breed plants to get the best crops. This is evolution as well. In fact, humans can splice the genes of a species and create a whole new distinct self-reproducing species. This is evolution, however none of these are natural selection.

Does the airplane have to be flying at the time? Because it'd save a lot of time and fuel if it didn't.

How to argue with a "pro life generation" person? by ninjatvamin atheism

[–]limbodog 0 points1 point ago

The difference, again, is time. A fetus is not yet a person.

A brain dead patient is no longer living.

How to argue with a "pro life generation" person? by ninjatvamin atheism

[–]limbodog 0 points1 point ago

Which is where the analogy breaks down. The fetus has never been before. It has not yet become a person.

How to argue with a "pro life generation" person? by ninjatvamin atheism

[–]limbodog 0 points1 point ago

My argument would be along these lines.

If someone gets shot in the head, and they are kept alive only by machines making their organs function, we feel emotion about doing so, but we pull the plug on them. They are not truly alive anymore. Why? Because all the life we truly care about occurs in the brain.

A fetus does not yet have a fully functioning brain either. It is not developed enough to be fully alive by the definition that matters. It has not gotten to the point that we should give it the protections we give a fully developed human. It is the beginnings of a life support system for a brain that might develop in time, but has not yet done so.

We use trimesters as benchmarks of development. After the passage of which we feel it is too close to full development to perform an abortion in all but the most dire circumstances.

Why Is There Anti-Semitism on Reddit? by David_Simonin AskReddit

[–]limbodog 0 points1 point ago

That may be bias confirmation. I have actually not yet seen it here. Maybe because of the subreddits I hang out in. Not sure. But it doesn't seem bad here to me.

Under normal circumstances, could there be/has there been any time when absolutely no one was on reddit, even for a split second? by squirplein AskReddit

No. Because somewhere someone will have it open in the background while they sleep or something.

Tho' FSM is clearly a joke. If it were me, I'd act like I was serious about scientology and start giving them all copies of Dianetics and sign them up for personality tests and ask them if they've had their e-meter readings done yet.

I think if he skipped over his boss that might be bad. She should know enough to do the right thing. Unless the company has an HR staff that you can contact. They exist to stave off lawsuits, so they should work to fix it.

Having said that, he should tell them that their constant badgering has helped him find god, and he's devoting himself to Scientology.

AmeriCorps is a program of the Corporation for National and Community Service, an independent federal agency. If they're harassing him based on his religious beliefs (namely: none), they are in the wrong. He should be able to go to his superiors and have it stopped. They are required by law to do so.

If you were put in charge of trimming Earth's human population down to 3 billion or so, what would your criteria be for who stays and who goes? by Clayburnin AskReddit

I'd just say "Not it!" and put my finger on my nose. The last 4 billion people to do so as well, they're out the door.

Isn't it possible(probable) that any religion was created to manipulate the ignorant masses into societal norms? by egalitarianusain DebateAChristian

[–]limbodog -1 points0 points ago

Probably true of the commandments. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Moses just led his people into a new land and they, who had been under Egypt's rule, were forming their own society. Was probably close to anarchy. So Moses takes off for a while, writes up some rules on tablets, and come back to say "Hey, here's the rules for our society that I wrote when God told me to. (whether this god was actually the island of Thera erupting is another story)

ELI5 how all the colors mixed make white, but when I do it with water colors they give me black. I know I sound childish. by PurppleHazein explainlikeimfive

[–]limbodog 1 point2 points ago

Ok, I want to try this one as well.

Let's just start by taking it as a fact that white light contains all the colors. You can demonstrate that this is true with a prism. Shine white light through a prism and it splits into a rainbow! http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/63/Dispersion_prism.jpg

Now, paint is not made of light. It's made of various chemicals and whatnot. All paint does is reflect the light shone on it back to you. If you turn off all the lights, you see only black when looking at paint (no colors at all). Paint absorbs colors.

So if I shine white light, which contains red, blue, green, yellow, orange, purple, etc. onto blue paint, the blue paint absorbs the red, green, yellow, orange, purple but reflects the blue back to you. So you see blue light bouncing off your painted wall when you shine white light on it. All the other colors hit the blue paint and became heat instead of light.

The object of paints and pigments is to absorb all the colors they don't want you to see.

If you had to, what single song would you pick that embodies the past four decades? by kevlarcoatedqueerin AskReddit

[–]limbodog 0 points1 point ago

1970s - "Anarchy in the UK" by Sex Pistols

1980s - "Come on Eileen" by Dexys Midnight Runners

1990s - "Nuthin' but a 'G' Thang" by Dr Dre and Snoop

2000s - "Hey Ya!" - Outkast

Not really favorites, but I feel like they pretty well embody those decades.

Drunk driver going down a 4 lane highway after a Bruins game. He was taking up all four lanes, scraping up against the jersey barrier and shit with sparks flying off his fenders. It took two state police cruisers to sandwich his car and slow it down. Even when they stopped him he was still flooring the gas and spinning the wheels on his little car.
