I wish I had saved more money. I wish I was more aggressive, arrogant, egotistical, and ruthless. Nah. As for The Jerk - it was a wonderful writing experience but I am especially pleased that it is shared by kids and their parents.

I call and write everyone I know and say I have a great new screenplay and they should read it. Because I still have something of a 'reputation' they will. But here's the deal: they don't read it. They give it to a reader who writes a report. If the report is good the person I called might read it. The best person to aim for is a director.

  1. I think each show is different. IN HOTC we had a meeting with a sharp exec at ABC who said he wanted a high school comedy. We agreed, but this time with really smart kids. Then Rich and I went to work creating characters.
  2. I don't know that most movies are badly written. And I will never know - unless it is my movie - why a movie turned out bad. Nobody starts out to make a bad movie. Shit happens. Like a dumb director rewrites it. Or studio execs 'note' it to death. Or the star demands his/her favorite to come in and rewrite. Who knows? But 'lazy' is rare.

Yes, comedy is harder. Everybody has their own process of coming up with a joke. Read Milton Berle on the subject.
