I'm glad you like math, buddy. So here's the deal. Being a math professor seems to be pretty awesome if mathematics is truly your passion. However, the process is very, very difficult. I would argue it is intellectually one of the most difficult subjects. There is really no cap on how difficult it can get. The math you know now is what i consider to be baby math. It is concrete and generally consists of simple ideas. Even calculus is is super easy to higher level mathematics. Most high school math consists of manipulations and algorithmic processes. As some have already said, higher level mathematics is mostly proofs that require time, patience, creativity, and an endless drive to succeed. Depending on what college you go to, you can jump right into these classes starting freshman year. I am a junior at a top 20 University. We have an excellent theoretical math program that prepares us from graduate school in mathematics. It's tough. I must have pulled 30 all nighters in the last 2.5 years. And 2 months ago, after a summer of research it hit me...im not cut out to become a mathematician. I have always considered my self really good at math and have always done well in classes (even in college). My class only has 14 "honors" (theoretical) math majors due to its difficulty. So I consider myself one of the stronger math ppl at my university. and truthfully...im an intellectual ant compared to some of the ppl in my class and evenmoreso people at other schools. It's hard, so you gotta really work hard if you want it. On the bright side, i have decided to get a after college. I quickly found out that companies LOVE math majors. I just got an internship at a great company in cincinnatti in marketing. starting salary out of undergrad is 68-73k. that's a lot of dough for a 22 year old. And I wouldnt have had this opportunity without having that math major on my resume. I say go for it. If you realize grad school isnt for you, you can always fall back on a badass job. I actually know far too much about this, so message me if you want to know more.
