Zimmerman medical report shows he had a broken nose, two black eyes and multiple lacerations on his head after suffering attack by Trayvon Martin by clyde_taurusin politics

[–]learc83 6 points7 points ago

Are you are aware that Zimmerman's father is a former judge?

A former magistrate judge years ago in Virginia.

Responding Officer:

What's that you say...You're dad was a low level judge in another state years ago? I've never even heard of him, and it's pretty clear you murdered this kid in cold blood, but that definately changes things...Sure we'll cover this up for you and risk our jobs for your dad the former judge from a state hundreds of miles away, whom I've never heard of let alone met.

Apparently Edison bashing has been hip for the last 10 years or so.

His methods may not have been elegant, but Edison was a master of the brute force method of scientific discovery. Remember the old Stalin quote--"Quantity has a quality all its own."

It's like meeting a doctor and saying "Oh wow! That's awesome, I can't even perform basic surgeries!"

I think that's mainly the result of art being much more accessible to the average person. The average person can pick up a piece of paper and start drawing on it, so to them it seems like something that just maybe they could do.

I ran a web design company with my designer friend (I program) and every damn customer we had thought they were a design expert. They seemed to forget that they were paying us $5k and that my friend had a degree and years of experience. It was a bit easier from the programming side. To the average business owner, programming is a dark art that they can't comprehend (and if they did try to make suggestions I could just start talking over their heads until their eyes glaze over).

It's also the same with writers. Every half-way intelligent person thinks they can write a novel if they only had the time to sit down and do it.

Why does showering with hot water feels so good, even though being outside in hot temperatures is uncomfortable? by swishsweetfishin askscience

[–]learc83 1 point2 points ago*

No, it sometimes gets above 100 (record is 105), but thats fairly rare, mid to high 90s is more common.

However, having spent time out west and living in Georgia, I would take 110 in Vegas over 95 in Atlanta.

Little known fact: during the 3 day heatwave of July 1980 (105 and high humidity), everyone in Atlanta died. The government had to repopulate the city, a la 28 Weeks Later.

Cakeday Thoughts: Young Ents, This Shit Is UNACCEPTABLE by sudohighin trees

[–]learc83 3 points4 points ago*

All kids are dumb, in the sense that they all require guidance. By dumb, I mean they lack experience--not that there are no intelligent children.

When you first really start to comprehend a subject (any subject), there is a point where you start to feel "smart". After you lean a bit more, however, you start to understand that there is way more you don't know, and you feel "dumb" again. Life is pretty much just an endless repetition of this.

Kids, even smart ones, just don't know enough to know what they don't know.

All kids are dumb and make mistakes. It's just that some of them have good parents who limit the scope of their mistakes, and prevent the damage from spilling out into the general public.

According to this chart (first result I got for "mens weight percentile") 170 lbs puts him just about at the 50 percentile mark for black men. Meaning that about 50% of men are smaller and 50% of men are bigger.

His height puts in him in the 95 percentile mark.

Id also add that if we remove all the obese people as outliers, 170 pounds would be well above average. Meaning that out of healthy fit males, 170 pounds is fairly large.

Beginning in 2020, NCEES will require having a Master's degree or equivalent to obtain a PE license by the_gordon_freemanin engineering

[–]learc83 0 points1 point ago

Most (if not all) states require teachers to get a masters degree in order to keep their teaching license and it's truly not a problem at all

That's only true in about 3 states from what I can find.

It's also an absurd requirement, because a masters degree in education is basically a fluff degree, with courses that sound like things that should be taught at the local senior center ("technology" courses and the like).

For a general self help book, I recommend Maths: a student's survival guide. I used it to brush up on math when I decided I wanted to improve my Math skills. It's 600 pages or so, from basica algebra all the way up to calculus and linear algebra.

[–]learc83 2 points3 points ago

my algebra and tri skills are flawed

I would go back and spend time improving your algebra. I've learned from tutoring 3 younger siblings that when dealing with calculus and trig, a lot of the times it's the lack of a mastery of basic algebra that's causes the most difficulty.

Another point--don't let your current math problems prevent you from pursuing a degree in a math related field. Check out Khan academy, and a book called Maths: a student's survival guide. Spend the summer mastering basic algebra, and trig if you have time, and you'll be fine when you start college.

Your reading the law wrong. Section 1 merely defines terms to be used later.

Sections 2 and 3 cover the actual offenses of "stalking" and "agravated stalking"

(2) Any person who willfully, maliciously, and repeatedly follows, harasses, or cyberstalks another person commits the offense of stalking, a misdemeanor of the first degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082 or s. 775.083. (3) Any person who willfully, maliciously, and repeatedly follows, harasses, or cyberstalks another person, and makes a credible threat with the intent to place that person in reasonable fear of death or bodily injury of the person, or the person's child, sibling, spouse, parent, or dependent, commits the offense of aggravated stalking, a felony of the third degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082, s. 775.083, or s. 775.084.

You'll notice that it includes the phrase "willfully, maliciously, and repeatedly follows, harasses"

Stalking doesn't apply here in any manner whatsoever. You've simply misread the law.

Not saying what he did was smart, or appropriate, but it's not illegal. Having just read Florida's stalking laws, following someone once doesn't constitute stalking. Stalking requires repeatedly following or harassment not just a one time thing.

Getting out of your car in a public place is not legally instigating a fight. But if you'd like to change the law then fine.

I was pointing out that the new "stand your ground law" has nothing to do with this. Under the old law and in every state in America (with or without a stand your ground law), if his story is true, he wouldn't be convicted, if his story is false and provably so, he would be.

I have no problem with people carrying guns, but I don't personally because the most likely crime I'm going to be involved in is robbery. If someone tries to rob me with a weapon, even if I'm armed, I'm just going to give him my wallet, and call and cancel all my cards when I get home. I don't want to risk death, or deal with the psychological trauma of shooting someone over a few bucks.

However, I can see situations where having a gun would be useful. Like the "round up everyone, force them into the bathroom and kill them"/rape your wife/jack your car and kill you kind of crime etc... Those kinds of crimes do happen occasionally, but the probability is low enough that I don't feel the need to deal with the hassle of carrying a gun in order to protect myself. Maybe I don't feel the need to carry b/c I'm physically large (6'5"), who knows.

Probably the main reason I don't carry any of my guns, is that possessing a weapon turns any minor crime into a felony. Busted for under an ounce of weed--no big deal, busted while carrying a concealed weapon--felony.

This has nothing to do with the stand your ground law.

The difference is that under the old law you had a duty to flee before you used lethal force.

If Zimmerman is telling the truth he was on his way back to his truck, was attacked and was on the ground being beaten, he couldn't have fled and would have been justified under the old law.

If Zimmerman is lying and he attacked Trayvon, the stand your ground law wouldn't apply either.

Notice I added this caveat.

short of making it a crime to carry a gun in the first place.

It that's what you're advocating then go for it it.

with the plethora of non-lethal self defence options

I would advise against carrying something like pepper spray, except for use on dogs. All it takes is shift in wind direction to wind up disabling yourself with pepper spray. If you try to pepper spray or use a stun gun on a someone bigger than you, or someone with a gun, you're very likely to end up dead. You're better off just running.

There is a reason cops carry lethal weapons and only use non-lethal in very limited circumstances. Tasers have very limited range, can't penetrate heavy clothing well only have one shot, and aren't necessarily going to take someone down. If you stop to take out your Taser, and miss or it doesn't penetrate his jacket, you've just given an attacker a chance to close and stab you, or pull his gun and shoot you. Once again, you're better off just running.

Attacker with knife, attacker with gun, physically larger/better trained attacker > you with less than lethal weapon. Just run.

You may not feel the need to carry a gun, I don't myself (I own a few guns, but don't carry). But don't make the mistake of believing a less than lethal option is a substitute for a gun. Until we have Phasers with a stun setting, less than lethal isn't really appropriate for self defense, for the average person.

From what he said he wasn't really on "community watch". He was on his way to the grocery store when he said he noticed someone suspicious, called the cops, and left his truck so he could see where the suspicious person was headed in order to inform the cops. Then when he couldn't see where the suspicious person went, he walked back to his truck to wait for police, and was attacked on the way.

Could be a lie he could have chased the kid screaming and karate chopped him in the neck, shot him, and then banged his head against the ground to fake injuries.

However if his story was true, and he was on his way back to his truck while he was attacked, I don't see any way you could make what he did illegal--short of making it a crime to carry a gun in the first place.

Even under the old self defense laws--before stand your ground--the only difference would have been that Zimmerman would have had a duty to flee before he used deadly force. However if what he says was true and he was on the ground fleeing would have been impossible. Therefore if his story is true, he wouldn't be convicted even under the old self defense laws.
