Supporter Group to Join? by ins1derin TheMassive

Join them both. I'll buy your first beers at Ruby's, and a guy named Cory will buy your first at 4th St.

Fear? Really? Soccer fans are just people, you know. No reason to be afraid.

Also, I really doubt these are Crew fans. Like, really seriously doubt. But, if you could provide me some more information, I can find out who's smashing beer bottles in your driveway and smash their face there, instead.

The Nordecke loves the neighborhood, and does way to much to support it and keep it clean than to tolerate this.

Sorry if it comes of as harassment, I'm really just looking to answer a longstanding question: How do you get non-soccer people to a Crew game.

No harm in asking, right?

Ok, so let me ask the next logical question: What can we, as supporters who want to grow the fanbase, do to bring you back? A lot has changed since then, and I'd be willing to bet that if you gave it a second chance you'd be pleasantly surprised...

Yeah, but in what? The sport or the team?

Fair. I am on the lanky side of things.

Really, two freebies and no idea how to use them? Total marketing fail. I'm so sorry. Here, have a schedule.

So we're back to quality of play. Unfortunately, I can't do anything about that. Again, running theme that I hope will wear itself out as time goes by. It's really the only reason to which the answer is "wait it out."

BTW, I really appreciate your honesty. I'm not trying to badger, I swear.

Well alright. That's totally respectable.

And no, for the record, I wasn't trying to back you into a corner. I'm not going to come to your place and drag you to a game or anything. I'm just trying to get a feel for the myriad reasons that people stay away from games. Yours is that you don't enjoy going to sporting events.

Seems to be a running theme here.

Well played.

So then it's quality of play. I can't afford a Lexus, but I still have a car.

If the game was fun anyway, just because of the other aspects of being there, would you go?

I think that making the jump from sports fandom to nazism is quite a leap, but carry on.

Most likely. Wouldn't want people having too much fun.

I hear this more than I can stomach. Some of us are taking it upon ourselves to distribute pocket schedules around town to minimize this excuse. It's a shame the team doesn't do it on their own.

"MLS soccer"?

So you're a soccer fan who doesn't like MLS, or you're a sports fan who doesn't like soccer?

You know, Dollar Beer Night and Buck-a-Brat night are on the same nights this year...

i might suggest walking up to Ruby's or 4th Street on a gameday and making friends, if you're the outgoing type. If not, then come find me :)

As for the subtly: yes it can be infuriating, especially with the Crew/MLS. However, the buildup and rarity of scoring is what makes it all the more wonderful, wouldn't you agree? if it happened every, say, 5 minutes, wouldn't it get to be a non-event? I think that everyone can agree that most times a hardfought 1-0 or 2-1 victory is better than a 17-6 blowout in baseball, so why not soccer?

Tickets can be had for cheap, if you know where to look.

So how do we increase your interest?

True, it's not the Kings of London, but you don't live in London, do you? Why not support the hometown side?

If I had a dollar for every time I hear that it's "awareness" I'd be able to buy the team and hire a better marketing department.

As far as the capacity from in the stadium, it depends on the game and where you are in the stands. For the "big games, it feels pretty full where as for the lesser known opponents it feels like a soccer game in Columbus, Ohio.

However, from the Northeast Corner (the Nordecke, where the diehards congregate) every game feels like a cultural event that shouldn't be missed. Drums, singing and chanting and the general rowdiness create an atmosphere unknown to most Columbus residents, sports fans or not.

I would even dare to call it Massive.

Edit: Media Coverage - Yes, the Dispatch sucks at covering things that they don't have an ownership stake in or don't start with Ohio State, but we're actually kind of lucky compared to most other MLS markets in that respect. We have our own beat writer and Mike Arace regularly chimes in about the goings on on Black and Gold Blvd.

As far as 97.1 goes, don't get me started. One of my best friends is a producer for Common Man & the Torg, and even though he tries to bring it up when pertinent, they do their best to not talk about it. But, like you said, it's nothing personal, they just have to pander to the tOSU audience.

(I'm going to skip over the part where you think soccer is dumb but just because it's apparent you're not a fan of any non-national team sports)

All fair arguments. I still want to get you to a Crew game, just because I think everyone should go once, but I see where you're coming from.

Yes, it is very... gross(?).. the way we worship pro athletes. But I would argue with you about being supremely loyal to one's favorite team. Maybe not to the point of violence, but it is a serious emotional connection for a lot of us, and runs deeper than just "my team is better than your team." It's more easily related to tribalism, where my town is better than your town, but on a 21st century we're-not-warring-tribes kind of scale. We can't fight over women, land or crops so lets fight about pro sports franchises.

Re: Olympics - World Cup? But again, you don't like soccer. You think Track and Field is more interesting. Or Archery. Cool.

In any case, thanks for your input.

You, my friend get props just for saying "football."

So it's giveaways. I can dig that. Thanks.

Group of friends: Those are ready made. Everyone knows someone who carries an Crew Union or HSH card.

Desire: That's the toughie. How do we get people who think they're not "into it" to give it a shot?
