How geeks argue on Facebook... by PSIStarstormOmegain geek

I'm surprised I read the whole thing, but it's actually a pretty interesting argument with lots of good reasoning

If that's true, it would never make sense to show up before 5:55 am on Wednesday. Is that correct?

This is ridiculously good. Best mashups I've heard anywhere since their last album.

Gave my mom Community DVDs for Xmas and told her to stop watching Whitney. Just got this email. by rando_brandoin community

[–]lajy 2 points3 points ago

And after watching approximately 5 episodes of Community, she went back to the show she previously enjoyed watching (Whitney), and immediately says it's only okay for a laugh or two? And then right away makes the comparison that Are You There, Chelsea? is as bad as Whitney is so she won't even waste her time with it. But before she watched about 100 minutes of Community, Whitney was a show she liked and would take time to watch weekly? I mean yeah, opinions change, but damn.

For you "Monk" fans out there, who do you prefer? Natalie or Sharona? by 089786in television

[–]lajy 8 points9 points ago

No contest, Natalie was way better. She was more likable, cuter, had a better (read: less annoying) kid, developed and progressed the show in more interesting and entertaining ways, and felt less like she was trying to steal the show from Monk.

TIL that in 1979 a woman jumped from the 86th floor of the Empire State Building, only to be blown back onto the 85th floor. Her only injury was a broken hip. by Fruit_Snackin todayilearned

Take a class on modern art (or just start your own research with Marcel Duchamp and go from there), it really helps to understand just what the hell people like Andy Warhol and Jackson Pollock are doing. The whole culture of modern art is basically one big inside joke that uses itself as a medium for meta-commentaries and critiques of itself, which is why it rarely makes any sort of sense to outsiders.

Never visualize lyrics by penguinsarelovein funny

[–]lajy 17 points18 points ago

I don't know if you're saying that because you don't understand the line, but I'm assuming so. The full context is "What she order? Fish filet," implying that she's constantly watching her figure, and also implying those are the type of women he's taking to dinner.

Jones made the shapeshifters, right? In their conversation, it seemed like she knew more about the plan than he did. She's definitely real.

So you haven't used Windows 7 then? Not that I dislike Vista, but 7 is literally only an optimized Vista that looks prettier and does its job better.

How I know my representative doesn't have a clue by tardisrider613in WTF

[–]lajy 0 points1 point ago

The point in this ridiculous hypothetical isn't to benefit the economy though, it's to reinvigorate the USPS. The irony is that the Congressman is costing the tax payers money while doing nothing to benefit the economy.

How I know my representative doesn't have a clue by tardisrider613in WTF

[–]lajy 0 points1 point ago*

It's still processed through the system, which is staffed and operated by paid employees. The cost is subsidized by the tax payers, not that it matters who pays for the service, as long as someone does. There is no direct increase or decrease in revenue for the USPS (although higher volume tends to make the total cost proportionately lower), and the total man-hours on the clock increases, so it is a net gain and helps keep them alive.

After rereading it, I do agree that it's not necessarily a shot at him or his fans. I guess it just came off that way, and still kind of does.

So I walked into my computer graphics class to find this... by Jeubinin funny

[–]lajy 9 points10 points ago

Maybe I'm understanding you wrong, or maybe you don't understand how fast 120 words per minute actually is. What is improper about your method? Are you actually looking at the keyboard and searching randomly for the key each time you hit one? Or do you have the layout memorized and touch type? Because if you do the latter, you are definitely not one of the people TheMagicToolBus was referring to, and you are almost certainly doing some variation of the "proper" method.

George Lucas is ready to retire from film by lajyin movies

I wasn't sure if I should submit the link from /Film or the New York Times. I went with the /Film article because it provides more of a summary, but the NYT article goes into great depth.

Edit: I finally got around to finishing the NYT article, and it's really worth a read. It answers a lot of questions and really helps you understand a lot of what Lucas is thinking.

While driving from Whistler to Vancouver with my family this summer, we came across a chair carving contest in a mall parking lot, with a sizeable (at least 100 people) crowd. That's the most Canadian thing I've ever seen.

Despite there being many items that are cooler or from better movies, the photos from The Hangover are what really do it for me. Something about a whole stack of physical photographs really brings them to life.
