Preliminary tests show that the Nikon 28mm f / 1.8 looks pretty good by testing78378in photography

[–]kwirky88 0 points1 point ago

Totally. The whole reason I bought the 14-24 is because their prime lens line up is horribly out of date in that range.

Canon tends to have a huge gap in performance and price between their L and non-L glass. These new Nikon lenses do a perfect job giving very good performance without being in the $1300+ price bracket. They're doing a good job filling a certain price & performance niche.

Nice rolleiflex :)

Most people get a K1000 as an old-school hand-me-down. Any of that Zeiss or Schneider glass?

Why do P&S cameras make very blurred photos in good light giving their short focal length? by susanuin photography

[–]kwirky88 6 points7 points ago

P&S cameras use very tiny sensors which show diffraction more easily than something like an APS-C or full-frame camera. While F8 just barely starts to blur an image on a larger sensor camera it makes the image blurred like mad for a P&S. The higher f-stop is required for the P&S because they go down to ISO 100 at the lowest, usually. They usually don't have faster shutter speeds than 1/400th of a second (sometimes 1/800th or quicker but the shutter doesn't fully open & close at those speeds on P&S's).

In combination you're left with an ISO 100 shot at around 1/250 sec F8 which will show tons of diffraction. Some cameras have a built in ND filter (the G11/G12 do, I know that) and turning this on in bright light can recover some sharpnes, allowing you to open up the aperture to F4 or F2.8 or so

I wasn't referring to yyc I was referring to fort mac.

Also the average income in Calgary is about $68k which is not enough to own the average priced home and not spend over 50% of the income on housing.

I saw photos of the "tire garden" and frankly it looked shabbier than the empty lot. And why was whatever was on the lot bulldozed in the first place? That's the serious question at hand.

Much of the problem stems from the city bylaws that force development. The lot might as well sit empty because you're not allowed to do anything good with it unless you've built a completely new structure on it. The developing companies have their hands so deep in our city coffers it's gross.

John Mar suspected "it's an occupy movement" yet many canadians (including most that participated in occupy) don't realize that it's not the banks that are contributing the most to Canadian politicians, it's the development industry. That's why our housing bubble has been allowed to go on for so long. That's why you can't find affordable housing in cities where the average worker earns $190k a year. And that's why we have perfectly functional homes bull-dozed to create "blights" upon the neighbourhoods.

I'm married to a Serb. Let's just say my wife's about as proud of her Bosnian family in Yugo as I am of my redneck trailer trash family in British Columbia.

The boxes boggles my mind. Why? Just make a quick trip to some big box store like a home Depot and they'll have tons of boxes for your next move.

They were trespassing. Simple as that. If somebody wants to raise chickens and grow potatoes in their own yard then fine but squatting is squatting. I wish the media would just leave this one alone.

Exactly. I usually spend no more than 2k on an ah item (I just started nightmare). Right now the blacksmith just churns out constant disappointment.

I want to start developing/scanning. by wafflehatin photography

[–]kwirky88 0 points1 point ago

tip: whenever you drop off your film to be processed somewhere ask them to not cut it, or leave it "un-cut". They'll leave it as one roll and leave it up to you to divide up the frames.

This cuts down on the time poorly trained technicians spend handling your film which in turn cuts down the chances of having damaged negatives. And if they do damage anything or do anything incorrectly talk to a manager. If the problem goes on without anybody being alerted to it they'll damage other peoples' film, too.

Yeah it's pretty easy. This video basically explains the process.

Make sure you're somewhere well ventilated because when the blix goes in it starts to produce a very nasty gas.

Best 24" IPS panel? by chetoflepin photography

[–]kwirky88 0 points1 point ago

Man $369 for IPS. Pretty soon there won't be an excuse to not have one.

On another note I had a spyder 2 express for a long while and recently upgraded to a colormunki display. I like it a lot more than the spyder. The software's nicer (and doesn't require a key) and the device also acts as an ambient light monitor, too. Great for trying to get your monitor at the same lux level as your prints' viewing conditions (important for pre-visualizing luminance).
