We've built GreenButtonAnalyzer.com for finding how much electricity appliances in your home are using. We'd love some Reddit feedback and support. by georgeoscarbluthin energy

[–]kubutulur 0 points1 point ago

That's just Enron accounting.

The joke is that it takes power to build those fridges, ship them to a warehouse, power the warehouse, pay people, people drive to warehouse to work, ship it to the store, drive to store, people drive to store to work, customer drives to store. I have serious trouble believing that buying a fridge that save $5 per year actually saves any energy net net.

Is this a joke?

People get a bill that spells out how much power they burn.

No one is getting a new fridge to save $5 per month.

Reddit, after having spent $850 billion on the bank bailout, Congress is planning on slashing NASA's budget by 20 percent ($400 million). Stand up and sign the petition to demand that our futures be funded, and request an increase in NASA's budget. by leo1cwin politics

[–]kubutulur -1 points0 points ago

Not to defend bank bailouts, but everyone got something, stock prices in everyon'es IRAs shoot up vs NASA that doesn't do anything that people actually want. Ever since 80s, most discoveries (for the amount of money spent) is done by companies.

Wind power is one of the most cost-effective sources of renewable energy. by glmoryin energy

Didn't UK not produce much power from the wind in the winter when it REALLY needed it for heating?

Sounds like someone who installed a copy of photoshop is trying to get Federal funding. You know what would actually work? Heating something up such as oil or sodium and storing the heat that way. I think a few companies are actually working on that already.

Kill the Messenger --- What Russia taught Syria: When you destroy a city, make sure no one -- not even the story -- gets out alive. by DrRichardCraniumin worldnews

[–]kubutulur 0 points1 point ago

IS this guy for real? he sounds like a professional troll. - a Stalinist purge of fighting-age males plus Orwellian propaganda that fed Russians a narrative wherein Chechen freedom fighters were transformed into Islamist mercenaries and terrorists.

Freedom fighters? CIA funded, through Turkish construction companies, done lots of assassinations and terrorism in Russian cities. Killing Russians in Groznii.

Holy fuck, people will actually believe this guy, it's so sad :(

Mutli-monitor versus Hi-res single monitor by nimnoxin hardware

[–]kubutulur 0 points1 point ago

I wanna try single 27" larger resolution mostly because I'm tired of the clutter of having monitor stand with 4 monitors on it (24'' bottom and 22" top). Second, is unless you sit far, you will develop a nasty headaces from staring at both 24" monitors, content is just spaced out too far, (I guess my desk is kind of short for this, but it fits just right with everything else that's in the room, so the desk stays.) It was pretty bad at one point that I had to use just one monitor for couple of weeks.

[–]kubutulur[S] 0 points1 point ago

I had that setup before, I had double 22" panels setup vertically, but it gets too much of a pain later on. Also can't really play games on it, nor watch a movie. It's just inconvenient, I want more squarish looking monitor, that's all.

Apple just broke $500/share. Is this an "Apple bubble", and what would cause it to burst? by shadowthunderin business

[–]kubutulur 0 points1 point ago

it could bounce on weekly, there's a large channel. Recent run up was breakout of a channel in daily. We'll see if weekly bounces or breaks through.

Decrease in margins due to supply chain costs going up. decrease in margins due to wireless carriers not subsidizing the iphone to the same degree, it absolutely drains the network, I think many started giving away blackberrys as they are much better on network usage.

people moving to other products. Personal anecdote: I finally decided to get iphone 4S, after a month realized I made a mistake, it's a good PDA, but a bad phone. It's winter, and I want to pick up a phone call, I have to take off my gloves to slide to accept or to navigate 3 levels of menus to dial something. I really miss old blackberry where everything was a button. (including camera button)

The Mathematical Equation That Caused The Banks To Crash --- Maths professor casts his eye over infamous Black-Scholes equation, used to price complex financial derivatives. His conclusion? "The world economy desperately needs a radical overhaul and that requires more mathematics, not less" by DrRichardCraniumin business

[–]kubutulur 2 points3 points ago

Not even that. That's make it too complicated. You're right about quant credit funds, I guess that was their reasoning, however

The originating banks's business model was to make as many loans as humanly possible with the expectation that it will roll over in the next 2 years. This is the simplest explanation that I've seen that explains why no records were kept, why no stress tests were done to any degree of satisfaction, and why they gave a loan to anyone.

I guess then banks started buying into the credit quant stuff themselves as they though hey, why aren't we making 40% return on leveraging up up equity tranches. We can make 30-50% return per year! Except no one factored in the methods of origination, which ironically many did do in house as well.

Any developers out there have workstations with>128GB ram?(non-VM related but rather for handling large data sets in ram) by kubutulurin hardware

[–]kubutulur[S] 0 points1 point ago

Few people have seem to trip on that I'm asking for workstation and pointing to a server.

I guess I Should have used 'system' rather than workstation. Some applications have large datasets, other may be heavily into graphics.

I'm more curious about real uses of systems with large amount of ram.

I know it's a server, I just couldn't find a decent example, server systems had lotsa ram though.
