I think that, if anything, it's the other way around: it feels like I'm contracting my ass IN and not pushing out.

yesterday I did a little testing, since I was feeling some mild pain when getting up or when contracting my ass: I tried doing bodyweight squats with my abs contracted (like I've been doing at the gym, the core tightening you suggested) and without it. I did feel some pain when doing the tightening and felt nothing when doing it 'relaxed'. I'm definitely doing something wrong somewhere. Dammit.
