Mythbusters: Eating cinnamon (for science). by Sickivionkeyin gifs

[–]kolr 6 points7 points ago

To be fair, coumarin, a compound found in cinnamon, can be toxic in high dosages.

Edit: by the way, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon (that isn't the Ceylon species) can have a dose of coumarin that isn't tolerable by smaller people.

Does your Dane sleep with your clothes? by thunder_tumblerin greatdanes

[–]kolr 1 point2 points ago

We let our Dane sleep in the bedroom with us (but definitely not on our bed!), so she might not worry too much about having a piece of our clothing with her since she can smell and be near us.

However, our Dane carries around her "Pookies" wherever she goes. She is super attached to a couple stuffed toys (they actually have no stuffing as we don't want her tearing them up and ingesting stuffing!). Here's a pic to show you just how attached I mean.

She also has her own blanket in the bedroom that we use to cover her when she goes to bed. She loves having a blanket over her, especially if it is raining or cold. If she knocks the blanket off at some point, she will begin a laborious effort to get the blanket back on top of herself... which usually ends in us putting the blanket over her because she hasn't figured out how to manage that herself. I'll see if I can't find a video of her doing it and I'll upload it later.

I'm glad this is the top comment. Tin poisoning is no joke, and you really should avoid leaving tin cans with food in the fridge. There isn't any problem until you open the can and the tin will oxidize and leech into the food.

This is what I thought all Narcolepsy looked like until I got diagnosed this week. by BlooregardQin Narcolepsy

[–]kolr 1 point2 points ago

In Texas, the doctor still has to tattle. I'm a diagnosed narcoleptic in Texas (I've been to 2 different docs), and I still have my license. In practice, the doctors will not inform the state about conditions like narcolepsy. The law just protects them from a civil suit if they inform the state and the state decides to suspend a person's license.

[–]kolr 0 points1 point ago

Hi there, fellow Texan here, and I just wanted to chime in about being diagnosed as narcoleptic in the state of Texas.

I am diagnosed and have not lost my license despite having told my doctors (I've seen 2 neurologists since being diagnosed) that I have fallen asleep while driving.

In Texas, doctors are allowed to notify the state of serious conditions, such as narcolepsy, if they believe it is a danger to others, and not be legally culpable (ie, you cannot sue your doctor for informing the state about your narcolepsy and subsequently losing your driver's license). Yes, that is scary. Hell, I'm scared of it potentially happening. However, it hasn't yet.

The reasons that my doctors have not told the state and started the process to suspend my license is that this is not typically done in real life despite it being encouraged by the state. My dad is a physical therapist and interacts with many doctors, and he has told me that most doctors prefer to suggest a course of action ("no driving until we get you situated on a new medication") instead of forcing their patient to go through the process of suspension and reinstatement.

My grandfather experienced a heart attack and some treatment last year, and even though the standard process, on the books, is to suspend their license, the doctor opted to tell my grandfather to stop driving instead of forcing my grandfather to go through the process of having his license suspended and then having to go and get it reinstated.

Now, I am not suggesting you go to the doctor without a fear or care in the world and get a proper diagnosis. I am only telling you about my experience and how most doctors will not bother to inform the state about your condition.

If you have any questions for me, shoot me a pm or reply here. I'd be happy to help in any way I can.

Is my mom the only one that does this?? by Hemoglobinnnin AdviceAnimals

I'm frequently wrong.

That's the only expectation I usually have right... the fact that I have a high likelihood of being wrong.

How is it that with a great username like "wrongagaindumbass" and 3 months as a redditor you don't have more karma? I would be wiping the reddit floor with dumbassery.

I have had a couple friends that people would assume we knew each other well, but they didn't. They just had a penchant for pulling pranks and didn't care or realize that the prankee did not find them funny.

At least this wasn't a physically hurtful prank.

Except that water is far more replenishable, not to mention cheap. I'm fully aware that 8,000 post-its is a drop in the ocean of paper use. It still doesn't mean we should all do it.

Couple of thoughts:

  1. I hope your friends aren't very "green"... as you just wasted a shit ton of paper

  2. I know this image is pretty big, but next time, make the image even larger. Bitches love huge image sizes (/s)

  3. Are they not going to see this when they get home? Why do we need to frontpage this shit? It's not like they aren't going to see it soon anyways.

Not to mention 3 times the amount of vacation days. Typical American leave is 1-2 weeks and 8 holiday days. Denmark has 6 weeks and you can "sell" 5 days of your vacation back to your employer.

In my opinion, landscaping or assembling furniture is not exactly trivial for the average teenager. Remember that these kids have to get their Eagle Scout before the age of 18.

I've heard and seen some troups that allow terrible projects and minimal amounts of work, but our troup required detailed project proposals that had to be approved before work began and at least 100 man-hours be provided by your troup members and family. That means that a kid that is typically in the 15-18 age range has to organize and direct a handful of people to get the project completed. Yes, the work itself might be trivial, but organizing a group like this (assuming the scout is actually doing it himself, not his parents) isn't.

Same here. I'm 26, it is still on my resume, and it still gets brought up as a positive point in interviews. Plus, it really seems to impress my wife that I made Eagle Scout. So it's wins all around for me.

I'm not sure if you just really care about collar stiffness or if you just don't give a shit about Eagle Scouts...

How common is your birthday? by mistermajik2000in offbeat

[–]kolr 0 points1 point ago

Also notice the high occurrence of births during the Christmas break that coincides with conception happening during Spring Break (the month of March).

Early March to December 24th is ~40 weeks.

One can reasonably conclude that Spring Break is, indeed, a time filled with poor judgement and rampant sex.

I've had it both ways. Sometimes I wake up and can't move anything or open my eyes and it feels like I've been holding my breath. Sometimes I can move a little and control my breathing.

I feel your pain! I have narcolepsy. Every fucking day of my life is like I only got 4 hours of sleep the night before. Though I am fairly accustomed to it by now, it still sucks. Even the Nuvigil barely puts a dent in it.

I just commented about bees in here. "Works with bees..." my ass. Bumblebees don't give a shit that you're just chilling and ignoring them. They want you to fear them, and the moment you act like you aren't, they strike!

I have a similar story involving bumblebees... "If you don't swat at them and move slowly away, they won't sting you!" Bull. Shit. Ended up with 2 stings on my neck, 1 on my arm, and 1 on my leg.
