louieanderson on how subtle economic and social trends have impacted the social contract by FelixPin DepthHub

Investing in a house you own can increase it's value. It can lead to extra profit when sold. So...

Also, you're corruption argument is a strawman, hence the down votes.

I could use some advice for running a Lewis and Clark style campaign by non_playerin rpg

Re:cataloging.

Maybe introduce them to foreign loot. Let them get lots of potions, but describe them only by color, viscosity, carbonation, smell, smoke, etc. Come up with a system they can figure out (viscosity is the 'alignment' of the potion, the color is the strength, etc). (Think potions in nethack or presents in Toejam & Earl)

Maybe the different plants have different properties? Oak = +2STR -1AGL, Rose = +2CHA, Pine = +1THAC0

Maybe some new undiscovered world on the other side of a portal. Benefactors send them in to learn and bring back riches. Maybe sometimes this portal sends them to Planet A, sometimes Planet B. Maybe the planets are the same, but different times, so topography is static, but plantlife or terrain or climate is different.

Ok, well, I'm not sure what you're asking for then.
If you want mapping and cataloging to be exciting, I'd make it part of the 'crunch', so (to me) system would matter.

I guess you could let the players know pre-game that mapping and cataloging will matter and then leave it up to them. Then, during the game, you can describe locations and horizons and require them to track something (a creature? the mouth of a river? a mountain peak?). Storms, fog, and night could all be difficulties (but then. do they roll perception? again, system matters). It could be like a dungeon crawl where it's up to them to map the dungeon as they explore it (maybe that could be a quest or pre-quest).

Maybe all the quests can be given by some benefactor, so there's loot rewards. Maybe there's some court intrigue during each visit?

Encumberence, survival, food would all be factors for conflict maybe. idk.

That's kinda cool. Expect for the weird rock formations and mountian ranges in the concept art, that popped my suspension of disbelief.

The system you choose is probably important in this situation, don't just pick D&D or whatever.

My first thought, though I haven't played it, is Dark Continent

Lady Blackbird dice rules help by SevrenBGin rpg

[–]kitsy 0 points1 point ago

You don't necessarily need more dice. There really won't be any situations were two people are rolling at the same time, so there's no reason why the dice can't be shared.

While having actual dice to represent your dice pool is nice, if they are the same color as the rest of the dice you might forget how many are from the dice pool and how many are not. Outside of different colors, you can keep track by writing down the number as a stat or keep track with poker chips or pennies.

There's no reason why the players cannot earn more than 7 dice in their pool, but if this is happening often, you're probably not challenging them enough as GM. ;)

All play is with d6.
All players have 7d6 in their dice pool.

When a conflict arises, you get one die, plus one extra for each trait tag that applies, plus you can add extra dice from your dice pool. Using your dice pool is optional.

If you used dice from your pool and you...
...pass, you lose those dice pool dice you used.
...fail, you keep those dice pool dice, plus add one more to your pool.

Feel free to ask more. :)

Watched Drive last night. Thought it was one of the worst movies I had seen in years. Why is it rated so high on IMDB? by maltman1856in movies

[–]kitsy 0 points1 point ago

There is a whole bit where Gossling explains what his character is doing in the article and why. How do you see that as him having no clue? If Refn wasn't on board with that portrayal, it wouldn't have been that way.

The subtext of his apartment having no posters is that he has no life outside of his car and his job. He doesn't even have a name in the movie! He's a blank slate. He creates action scenes for movies and, on his off hours, he creates action sequences in real life. Which job is mirroring the other? Do movies imitate life or is it the other way around? *
The mask answers that question. He puts on the mask in real life to recreate something out of a movie. The driver wishes he was the character Frank Martin from The Transporter.

Meta #1: Is Drive realistic & lifelike or style & drama? Is it trying to capture human essence (♩ A real human being ♩) or it just art?

All those slow, long, quiet parts are there for you to try and get inside his head. To try and see the movie from the character's perspectives. Next time you come across a slow, quiet scene in Drive, don't just sit there slack-jawed waiting for the next Michael Bay explosion; think. What does the driver think of this situation? What does Irene think? What does Irene think the driver thinks? What are their motivations? Is this relationship just another movie scene to the driver?

Meta #2: Is this just another movie romance? Is this a commentary on movie romances and realism in movies?

Also, check out this guys comment from a couple months ago. It's fucking amazing.

Er, if you're traveling and experiencing a new city/country, why take old books? I'd rather go for travel books specific to the region or fiction about or from the region.

Using achievements as perks. by ZzzZombiin truegaming

[–]kitsy 0 points1 point ago

In a way, don't most games do this?
Take something like WoW or GTA for example, a quest such as "Go to X" is a invitation to complete that achievement. Completion nets you more money, XP, etc. "Kill X" is the same thing.
The only difference would be that in these games these achievements are not always options to progress further.

I think my thoughts are a little outside of the parameters you're discussing, but I thought it was an interesting point to bring up...

Great books to read in the loo by jedilionin books

[–]kitsy 0 points1 point ago

Wikipedia: In an editor's note at the beginning of the book, Vonnegut claims to have found hundreds of scraps of paper of varying sizes, from wrapping paper to business cards, sequentially numbered by their author in order to form a narrative of some kind.

So, the story is made up of many small anecdotes that slowly come together. This disjointedness might work for reading in brief interludes.
