Why all the fuss about attachment? by Polarkiwiin Parenting

[–]kingvitaman 0 points1 point ago

I don't think anyone would have any problem with what's presented in the article because it's basically the same as any other sort of parenting. It's like saying "what's wrong with forming a bond with your baby?". The thing that annoys some are people like this who become worried about putting their baby down for five minutes to take a shower, and others are actually encouraging her to just take the baby into the shower with her.

Personally to me it just reeks of a marketing gimmick to sell books. I've seen a few interviews and the women being interviewed all say the same thing and talk about Dr Sears. And their philosophy pretty much boils down to "do what you want", and then the actual parenting advice is beyond basic (such as what was outlined in the article linked here). The only point of contention seems to be that attachment moms never let the kid "cry it out" so to speak. So on the one hand they are saying "do whatever you feel is right", and to me that's letting my baby girl cry for five minutes because she's tired and will inevitably fall asleep, but then they act as if they have some special knowledge (there's actually no long term studies about attachment parenting, only attachment theory and these studies were done with neglected babies who came from very poor socioeconomic backgrounds). So they can't have it both ways, you can't say "do whatever you want", and then act as if what they are doing is supported by science and therefore correct.

TLDR: It's a wishy washy "movement" not grounded in Science designed to sell books to moms who are scared they aren't good enough.

Standardized testing as child abuse by dgodonin Parenting

[–]kingvitaman -1 points0 points ago

It's hard to see through all the hyperbole and see if there's actually some sort of a problem at the school. They are "held like prisoners" and "forced" to take tests. Give me a break. Maybe there is some problem at this school but it's impossible to read it objectively as it's presented by this "lets nerf the world" mommy. Yes, kids take tests, no, many don't enjoy taking them (some do), and yes, some kids are smarter than others. The problem that I have is that this sort of mentality pushes responsibility away from the children/parents and teaches children that if they didn't do well on a test, then that's the fault of the test maker, not the fault of themselves. It's ridiculous, it's idiotic, but unfortunately it's all too common in the US. sigh.

Agreed. But The LDS church doesn't prescribe to this idea that "if you're not bothering me, I won't bother you". Quite the opposite. They take the money they get from usury from their followers and use it for political purposes. Most notably right now it is being used to stop gay marriage. So I don't care what anyone believes, but as soon as they step into the political realm with their faith, and try to manage other people's lives. Then they're fair game.

It's a great idea, and I've tried it. Works well. However if you're living with someone else and you are overheard telling a story about how you were wearing golf shoes while fighting a giant lobster to win your grade school crush back , it can be a bit strange.

I have no drawing skills whatsoever & Im being put into a digital arts class in school. Please help? by mymilkshakesdrawin learnart

[–]kingvitaman 0 points1 point ago

I doubt you'll be graded on your final product which is produced. More likely you'll be graded on your research, documentation of your experiments with drawing, and effort put into the class. The kid "who can draw" won't necessarily get a better grade if he doesn't show any effort or improvement.

How to get better? Draw. Draw for as little as 20 to 30 minutes a day. Get a sketchbook and set a goal for yourself to have it filled by the end of summer.

Would you be in favor of leaving Health Care up to States? by kingvitamanin PoliticalDiscussion

I'm not proposing anything. I'm asking a question, and wondering how conservatives would craft a state run (err. Privately run) health care system.

there is no push on the federal level from the right to undermine states' right on gay marriage.

DOMA. Again, written and sponsored by Republicans and signed into law by a Democrat (Bill Clinton) Obama now wants to repeal it, and it is being fought hard by the right to the point where it's an election issue they are actively campaigning on.

should the government step in and help them out?

That's a question. Not a statement.

If the states could decide these matters then they would have the ability to deny emergency treatment for those without insurance.

As to your first point I was merely trying to move the conversation along as it relates to having government regulation and the traditional Libertarian line of thinking which states that having any government regulation will result in poorer quality product/service.

Hey r/learnart! Can anyone point me in the right direction for how to make something like this or offer some insight by McSlurryin learnart

And to further help you along. I'd say the first step is to set up a daily routine where you draw. Research the artists you like and want to emulate and copy their works. Then try to make some derivative works based upon theirs. See how there's a lot of trees in that drawing? That means that you should go outside (don't draw from a photo) and draw trees all day. See the positioning of the figures? That comes from a lot of practice of drawing the figure.

Sorry that there aren't any short cuts. Just start drawing, and do it every day and take it as seriously as the jocks do football.

Why should we even have the state government involved at all? In the spirit of the free market I would imagine any government oversight or regulation would result in poorer quality care. Leave it completely to the private sector no?

Fair enough. I'd say they're both equally against the idea of states deciding laws concerning medical marijuana. Romney has also stated he would continue to use the power of the Federal government to raid medical marijuana clinics. Gay marriage on the other hand of course the Republicans are against states deciding this, while Obama is for it. Like I said it's pretty much a bullshit buzzword which is virtually meaningless at this point because neither party supports "states rights"

I just figured in a free market that HMOs, insurance companies and private hospitals would be the ones taking care of Health Care. If you know of another solution I'm all ears.

[–]kingvitaman[S] 4 points5 points ago

Sure. A completely free market run by insurance companies and HMOs. The question is whether or not the Federal Government should have a moral obligation if a large part of a states population starts dying if they can't afford/get health care.

Fair enough question. The broader question I'm raising is one of states rights so it could apply to Vermont as well as Alabama.

HELP: Trying to create a Pollock-style work using acrylic paint on a ceramic tile -- Advice? by stephlin learnart

[–]kingvitaman 0 points1 point ago

Use sign painting enamels such as One Shot. The acrylic won't stick to the tile the way you want it to and enamels will provide much more brilliant color. Then search out videos of pollock painting on youtube, there's one famous one where works on a piece of glass. Don't splatter, make deliberate drips which correspond to an overall composition.
