I wouldn't lay all the blame on the consumer aside from the features you mentioned Rim's Phones don't stack up to their competitors, The cameras and making it easier for people to create apps for BB, and the browsing all crippled RIM.

I think it was too close to my Mac charger and overheated? I'm not exactly sure. i don't know whether to get a new screen or new phone.

I actually really agree over the past 2 months I've lost 26 contacts to Iphone. My BBM contact list shrinks everyday, my screen just broke on my 9700 I'm considering making the switch my self I feel disillusioned on the Blackberry.
