This must be what people think when I tell them I'm from Louisiana.

It's definitely easy to find a million examples of ways to prove people wrong. Redditors are exceptionally good at this. I'm just speaking from personal experience because it's the only thing I know.

Whether you agree with the degree part or not, don't half-ass pursuing music if you're serious about it. You absolutely can have a paying career in music and anyone who tells you otherwise isn't creative enough and isn't trying hard enough.

Yeah - except for the playing music and networking part. I agree that many Universities that offer music degrees probably won't make much of a difference if the student isn't doing everything they can outside of class.

There's a lot of stuff you can read online, but unless you have a clear goal to apply that knowledge too, it's going to be hard to focus and build a plan. Since it sounds like you are interested in performing, engineering, production, but may not have a lot of experience outside of your own projects, I would seek out local music meet-up groups to network. Get involved with as many projects as possible. Find a mentor. Continue taking lessons, and if you aren't into going to college full time, at least work on your general ed courses so you have the option.

I've yet to hear of someone going to get a fall-back degree at the same time as pursuing music actively. If you're ready to get serious about it, do everything you can to help yourself.

Don't short change yourself. Do EVERYTHING. Don't rely on anything panning out. Stay enthusiastic, and surround yourself with the people who are successfully doing what you want to do. The internet won't make you a better player, teachers, other musicians, and life experience will.

I want to study music production; would love some recommendations on schools. by Bloopiein WeAreTheMusicMakers

I graduated from Berklee, which to be completely honest, was the most fun I've had in my entire life. I couldn't have done it without a scholarship and to be honest, I'll be paying back what remains on my student loans for like... ever.

That being said, it was like rocket fuel for me. I played music around the clock, took as much as I could from the teachers that resonated with me and came out of that place a much better musician. I still know all my close friends from Berklee and now we work together in LA.

I don't think that experience is exclusive to Berklee. There are great teachers in other places. Network with people who are as committed to this as you are. I did like how music-heavy and academic-light Berklee was. If I had to balance my music courses with actual general ed, it wouldn't have been the same. Also, play with people who are better than you and don't worry about impressing anyone.

The show is HUGE. Take your time walking around and collecting goodies - there will be many. Personally, my favorite rooms are the piano rooms. They are out of the larger exhibit halls and in smaller rooms on the 2nd level usually. I like to go up there to take breaks, play around on the pianos, and get some quiet(er) time in.

Also, be sure to find wherever the DJ equipment is being demo'd - they're usually pretty fun to watch!

I'll be singing and playing the piano with a small band - some of my own tunes :)

Well, if you want to drive about 45 minutes into LA, it is my opinion that you can't go wrong spending the day at the beach. You could spend most of the day in Venice if you wanted, walking the beach, checking out the boardwalk area (lots of street performances and stuff to buy), or head a couple blocks inland to the canals - That's probably my favorite way to spend a spare day in LA, but there are probably more exciting suggestions coming your way :)

I'll be at NAMM too! If you're around on Friday the 20th, I'm playing at teh Sennheiser booth at 2:15 and 5:00pm. Come say hi :) I'm also doing some demos at the PreSonus booth every day, but not sure on the times.

Have a great time!

Buy music - just look further than those brands to find it.
