Syfy Announces Several New Projects Including Some ACTUAL Sci-Fi shows (Defender, High Moon and more)! by Bovice1in scifi

[–]kastang 1 point2 points ago

No thanks. I've been Syfy free since they cancelled SGU. No plans on returning.

Grooveshark Mobile, doing it right by IN547148L3in cordcutters

[–]kastang 2 points3 points ago

They can, but they don't. I think Apple chose wisely to admit to making a mistake allowing an app in the store that maybe a half percent of all iPhone users were able to download without getting caught. Where as Amazon chose to exploit this power with removing the 1984 book from all Kindle devices.

Can you imagine the bad press Apple would get if the general public knew they had the ability to remove apps from anyones phones?

[–]kastang 8 points9 points ago

Not necessarily. GVMobile did this when Apple removed all Google Voice apps from the app store a few years ago. The developer continued to develop his app and release it on Cydia for well over a year (even offering a paid version on Cydia). When Apple finally allowed Google Voice apps on the official store, they allowed GVMobile back with no issues.

Cordcutters, you rock! by Internaltheory79in cordcutters

[–]kastang 1 point2 points ago

If you goto TV Fool and type in your address info, you should be able to get a good idea of the channels you should expect to get. Generally speaking, you should have no issues getting all of the green signals, and most (if not all) of the yellow signals.

Height and placement are big issues. When I was testing my OTA Antenna I was picking up stations 88 miles away (with 75%+ quality). I had my antenna mounted ~30Ft from ground level on a window.

I would return your store antenna and read this comment I made a few days ago in another thread. There's a good chance you'll get more OTA channels this way.

Question for those who've read books: how does TV series correspond? by earthduckin TheVampireDiaries

[–]kastang 6 points7 points ago

I read the original four books that were published in the early 90's before watching the TV Series. I originally enjoyed them very much. After watching the TV Series however, I tried re reading the originals and couldn't get past the first few chapters.

In my opinion, the TV Series is one of the few cases where its actually exponentially better then the book series its (ever so loosely) based on.

That being said, if you want to give the book series a try, you won't be spoiling anything for yourself. Stick with the first four books though, don't read any of the "continuation" books she published in the early 00's - they are terrible. LJ Smith actually got fired from writing her own series after publishing the continuation books.

Anyway to get the random channel surfing feel of cable? by not_a_wolfin cordcutters

You may want to try building your own antenna. It costs no more then a few dollars and (in my experience and many others) will outperform many of the retail antennas on the market.

Since Eccleston already said he's not coming back - I'd imagine no.

Whenever you put something back together there is always an extra screw. No exceptions.

Are there any good Star Trek novels? by internetNazgulin scifi

I enjoyed reading the Starfleet Corps of Engineers series. The writing definitely isn't the best, but the overall stories are good.

BBT is already renewed for two additional seasons not counting this current season. Its ratings are increasing each season. It's going to be around for awhile.

Why BSG: Blood & Chrome should be on HBO by HansEricssonin BSG

[–]kastang 15 points16 points ago

After what Syfy did with Caprica and SGU, Syfy is possibly the worst possible channel for Blood & Chrome to be on.

SG Ending by twoshaiin Stargate

[–]kastang 1 point2 points ago

I mentioned this in another thread not too long ago too - The Gateworld Forums have some great fanfiction based seasons. 6 fan made seasons of SG-1, 2 of SGA, and 1 of SGU. While none of it is cannon, its still pretty neat.

MGM is in a financial nightmare right now - they can't afford to make a Stargate Movie to finalize the series. It would have been more feasible to create the movie before they sold off all the props, but now their only two options are to recreate all props needed, or green screen the entire thing - both are very expensive.

I do not believe however that this is the last of Stargate. I think the entire franchise needs a solid ten years to sit. I love Stargate, but after 14 years of being on air, it needs a break to reach the next generation of viewers. A few years down the road MGM will be out of its financial slump, a new CEO will manage the company and want to ring back some classics (Stargate).

If you're looking for some minor SGU closure, Joseph Mallozzi did several interviews with Brad Wright on his blog regarding what would happen after the SGU finale. I can't find it right now, but if you can its definitely a good read.

Amazon adds Viacom shows, expands streaming selection by Pikamander2in cordcutters

[–]kastang 1 point2 points ago

Amazons collection is great. Especially paying student level pricing for it ($39 yearly for Prime). My biggest complaints are lack of proper queue, and not grouping individual seasons into one series. With more content becoming available on Amazon VOD I sure hope they implement those features soon.

The 12th Doctor? by bonnsterin doctorwho

Hugh Laurie is my number 1 pick. It could be perfect timing as well - House at most has one season left; it would end right around the time to look for a replacement for Smith.
