TROPHY CASE

Is France really hated in the USA ? by SThorin AskReddit

[–]jwhh91 1 point2 points ago

I don't hate France at all... In fact, I'm leaving to take six credits at Université de Technologie de Troyes. Since I don't speak any French (Courses are in English.), I'm actually very apprehensive about how to interact when meeting people. Do I attempt a phrase or two in French and then switch to English? I'd prefer to skip such a useless exercise, but reps from my home university made it sound like that would come off as rude.

If scientist's accidentally stumbled across a form of renewable, clean, and efficient energy today, would it decimate the worlds economy? Would it morally, and ethically right to implement the new technology right away? by jlesnickin AskReddit

[–]jwhh91 0 points1 point ago

Look at history. The US developed fission power in conjunction with the weapons programs. This led to the reactors using enriched uranium for fuel, and I guess they must have assumed they'd make bombs forever or something. The Canadians, however, developed the CANDU reactor in the same timeframe as the BWR and it uses uranium in its naturally occurring abundances. This requires them to moderate using heavy water, which is very expensive, but obviously it's a one-time cost since it circulates in a closed loop. Also, the lack of understanding about the health effects of radiation exposure should have been reason to delay the implementation of the technology (It went from the drawing board to breaking ground in the beginning, with no standard plant design).

Drawing on all of this, for any new source, the proper steps would be maybe some press coverage, followed by R&D carried out SEPARATE from weapons research, and only after a plan for smooth implementation has been developed should those in charge proceed to unleash this new source of energy on civilian infrastructure. Had this occurred before, energy would be a great deal cheaper and there would be a lot less misinformation about nuclear energy and radiation.

TL;DR - It ends better for everyone if a new source of energy is harnessed properly and not simply unleashed.

What was the most trouble you got in at school? by woodywoodwoodwoodletin AskReddit

[–]jwhh91 0 points1 point ago

I bought tire chains off of Amazon for my mom's Buick Roadmaster Estate Wagon and ravaged the football field the night before my school's first televised game. It was because the football coach was a real bastard... He lectured me about integrity over a false accusation that I had snuck into a $3 admission school dance, and it came out in the wash after I left that he had been fucking the secretary behind his wife's back for years. Anyway, I layered up, changed schools, and moved on with my life.

Sorry about the lack of clarity. For some reason, I put Olivet instead of Oliver. I've edited the post accordingly, and this is my folks' favorite domestic wine.

I'll be in Troyes mainly, and their favorite wine is a semisweet red made by Olivet. The criteria for that aside from the taste is the price and that it's made just one state away.

I appreciate when it's above the text, personally. If somebody sees a tl;dr at the top and finds it compelling, they're free to simply continue. Placing it on the bottom may require the user to also scroll back up, depending on their window size, screen resolution, if they're on a mobile, etc.

TL;DR if your kid is gifted, send him to a large school with AP classes and extracurriculars.

My parents sent me to a small-town farming school. I was reading at an 11th grade level in 5th grade, and I scored a 26 on the ACT when I was a freshman in high school. Truth be told, I couldn't relate to most of my peers, since all they ever talked about was farming, going 'up north,' and football. Eventually, I realized that a nutless monkey could get a 4.0 at that place, so I occupied my time by coming up with increasingly elaborate pranks with my friends. I also would subtly poke fun at my peers. The example I remember the most clearly was when I was actually called a poser because I was wearing a John Deere shirt (ironically) and didn't own a tractor (My riding mower didn't count in their eyes). Everything became much more bearable when I transferred to a large school with AP classes, a great music program, and a debate club.

How feasible would it be to give Wolfram Alpha Pro the capability to export plots, tables, etc. into a .tex file or code? I have to do a lot of reports in Latex, and performing the same steps in Matlab over and over to get my plots looking sharp is fairly tedious.

PS: Thank you so much for Wolfram Alpha. This year at university, I have been enrolled in a two-part class that essentially boils down to solving complicated integrals with sometimes up to six dimensions. Being able to plug long expressions into Wolfram Alpha instead of the tedium of figuring it out by hand or sweating proper syntax really saved my sanity.

What does Reddit think of Nuclear Energy? by spiderbabies4dinnerin AskReddit

[–]jwhh91 0 points1 point ago

There are pretty strong odds I'll be involved in reactor design, and the recent trends in that field are great, especially passive safety systems and small-scale modular designs. Even if the people of the US don't get on board with lots of new plants, the Chinese and Indians NEEED to add nuclear plants so that their people can have electric power without choking to death and what have you. The biggest concern people have is often waste disposal, and Yucca Mountain should have been the solution. What it boils down to is deciding what level of activity is okay. Lots of people say zero radiation is acceptable, but that's stupid. The walls, bananas, your spouse, and etc all emit some measurable level of radiation. The waste we have today really won't be much of a problem even after 500 years, because the most dangerous (i.e. active) isotopes decay the fastest. In short, I'm interested in nuclear energy enough to make a career of it and possibly leave my home country.
