Thank you for that response! I'm just glad those points made sense to someone else, haha.

blame the government first -- this is not logical Certainly, legalizing everything is not the best answer

I'm definitely in agreement with you on these points.

I think you're trying to make an argument for personal responsibility in recreational drug use. I'd agree with you, if you hadn't made the two unrelated examples which have led to you arguing in bad faith. (Thus undermining your entire point.)

That is, speeding and overdue fees are basically harm reduction actions in the form of sanctions against the person responsible. Both work at preventing people from placing others at risk of harm. (Collisions and preventing access to books, respectively.)

Now risk of harm in recreational drug use is another matter entirely. The sanctions and their effect have thus far worked something like this:

  1. Sanctions in the form of preventing access to amphetamine precursors (Government of Canada managed) have not succeeded in reducing the harm to society from recreational drug use.

  2. Sanctions in this form previously mentioned have increased it, as seen through the death of teenagers from ingesting what they thought to be MDMA, which was in fact a toxic knock-off.

  3. Harm reduction actions such as safe injection sites for heroin users (Health Canada managed) and cool rooms/fluids for MDMA use at raves (community managed) have been shown to have a positive benefit on public health.

So really, we've got an issue here to discuss about the effects of prohibition as a means of harm reduction.

tldr; Don't argue in bad faith and create strawmen.

Say what you will about the man's character, but I think it's a shame that Sean Connery's last acting role on film was that turd League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

You made a few points enjoyed reading, but I do have a question since you mention history shows otherwise.

Could you provide any examples of how systems for monitoring and identifying potential criminals resulted in a public more willing to harm others?

Instead of more retro maps, I think new maps with the same design ideas in mind would be awesome.

It stands for Alternate Reality Game. Wikipedia has a good indepth article on it here. The most notable ARG, imo would be the marketing campaign that was set up for Portal 2 which had Reddit scrambling for a few weeks.

What DLC would you pay for? by Dogmaain battlefield3

[–]jordanonorth 4 points5 points ago

I'd pay DLC for new, original maps

Me too. In fact, I want to see maps that are actually designed for 64 players. I realize that DICE has stated they shrunk the maps for consoles, and the desire to have more close quarters fighting. But I'd really like some huge maps, even if it were just for PC.

Never thought I could agree so much with something so critical of Half Life. by ivosaurusin Games

[–]jordanonorth 27 points28 points ago

I started typing up a comment, but found this thread agrees with what I was trying to say, so I'm just going to jump in. Wrong expectations, definitely. Both Alyx and Freeman are bad characters when you expect them to be part of an accurate human character driven story. HL1 and 2 are not these.

I think this failure has been covered before, especially by this writer, "any real progress in plot is always divorced from any interactive challenge."

The OP's video stands as good criticism in this sense, and should be followed if we want to improve games as interactive storytelling media. It shouldn't be faulted for failing at that when it obviously is looking to be a narrative shooter.

It's regrettable that extremophiles aren't sufficient to create interest or research dollars alone and the pharmaceutical potential is used. It's seen a lot as a form of lip service, but still, too bad.

Murray Mandryk is the best political writer in this province. Not only because he can summarize an issue well, but because he's so non-partisan. He called out the NDP when they were in Government, and he calls out the Sask Party now just as much. Kudos to him.
