TROPHY CASE

Any good cab companies in houston? by happycrabin houston

[–]joonix -6 points-5 points ago

I was being sarcastic you dolt. Public transportation, cabs included (and even public transportation in the form of City providing infrastructure that supports walkability/pedestrians), is a giant fucking joke in Houston.

An Open Letter to Australia from an American on His Last Day Here by SimpleSimianin australia

Eh... you're probably in the Northeast or California. I find Australians to be very laid back, but not as "polite" as here in the south/TX

What dont people understand - gambling is illegal in TX and won't be legal for a long long time. City has no power over that.

Netflix is not a persuasive alternative. Not only does it not solve the problem of getting access to shows just after they air (Netflix only carries seasons released on DVD, usually several seasons behind), the library of films is also subpar. It's really bad.

Nothing will be able to compete with usegroups+home theater PC for a long time.

Facebook shares fall 13% on second day, below IPO price by pepitkoin business

[–]joonix 9 points10 points ago

Uh... that's not how it works. The company wasn't valued at 16 billion, that's how much they raised by selling stock. the company as a whole was valued at $106 billion, which is 27 times REVENUE, which is insane.

Take this as a chance to finally make the switch to Newsgroups and never have to deal with this crap again.

It's ok. If things get bad, FB can always buy an advertising refinery like Delta did to cut their input costs.

Saverin probably was an idiot. I can see wanting to force him out when he was being lazy while the company was taking off. Now he's worth $3B.

The rest of it... keep in mind he was like 19. When I was that age, I had delusions of grandeur and thought I looked cool by talking like that as well. How I was cool for wanting to skirt ethics. Meh. It's part of adolescence.

BTW -- almost every business owner will privately resent / despise his customers/users. Just like employees bitch about their bosses, the boss bitches about his boss (the customers).

Jessica Irvine: Unpicking the collective whinge by PatternPrecognitionin australia

Because you want to be working in your career path, have stability, save up for a down payment, able to get a mortgage, pay down student loans first, etc etc. Very few under 30 have all this. Even if you do, you'll only be able to afford houses in the distant suburbs, where young people generally don't want to live.

[–]joonix 2 points3 points ago

Love that your complaint is that "most people under 30 can't even buy a 3bdrm home."

As an American, this is hilarious. I really don't know anyone who is buying their own 3bdrm home before 30. That's not even on our minds right now. We're trying to just get jobs going before 30 and maybe taking a dent at our student loans.

Why do so many tech companies end up in high-tax California when they could really operate anywhere; even overseas? by BruceCambridgein investing

[–]joonix 0 points1 point ago

Also proximity to venture capital. They have to go where the money wants them.

In addition, California actually have a friendly regulatory environment for tech and startups. Something to do with employment and limiting non-competes. Results in talent being able to jump around frequently to new companies. Can't remember at the moment.

The taxes aren't a big deal. Moving to Florida or Nevada would be a huge joke. However, there's a lot of tech moving to Austin. It's not usually the main operations, but secondary operations which don't rely on recruiting top tier talent. For example Apple is opening up there for a lot of tech support and other support roles.

SV is really a limited space in terms of having droves of lower wage employees there. Cost of living is high and real estate is in short supply. The lower level work will flow to states like Texas in the long run.

Senate proposes "Ex-Patriot Act" imposing a 30% tax on those who renounce citizenship by TheResPublicain TrueReddit

[–]joonix 13 points14 points ago

You can also deduct the taxes you pay to the country you're living in. So if you're working in the UK you'll probably not have to pay anything since their taxes are higher. US has tax treaties with certain nations, they can see financials just like in the US. However, if you're outside of a tax treaty nation, say in Hong Kong, you can probably stash your earnings in an account there and the US would never know...

[–]joonix 4 points5 points ago

Right ... a model which has done nothing but massively succeed around the globe will fail in Houston because people here are somehow fiercely loyal to major brands?

People pay fees every year to Costco for the privilege of shopping there. Why? Because it's worth it. The 25 cents for a cart will be worth it too for all the people who are looking to save money on food.

Yep... if we formatted Google's C:\ drive and wiped it out of existence, nothing valuable would be lost. We would all go to the local factory and have a CNC machine build our search results.
