Agreed, but it is inaccurate to say Ray didn't use a Moog just like it would be inaccurate to say that Clapton didn't play a Les Paul. Although the synthesizer isn't part of the "sound" people commonly assaciate with The Doors, the band still used synthesizers.

Yes he did. There is Moog on the Strange Days album. In fact, it was one of the earliest uses of the Moog on a mainstream rock record.

Searching for surf-rock-y guitar tone... by stevietwoslicein WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]jojotv 3 points4 points ago

Search eBay and craigslist for old budget guitars. 60's models by Harmony, Kent, Silvertone, and Teisco (just to name a few) will give you that nice single coil twang.

However, the biggest part of the surf rock sound is a spring reverb-equipped tube amp. My old Ampeg Gemini was the best surf rock amp I've ever heard, with the Fender Twin a close second. IIRC, Dick Dale had a spring reverb tank that he ran his guitar through and into a Showman amp.

Good luck!

TIL - That in 1977, in response to David Bowie releasing the album 'Low', songwriter Nick Lowe released an album called 'Bowi'. by JonnyBhoyin todayilearned

[–]jojotv 17 points18 points ago

Bowie is influential, and so is Nick Lowe. Their respective levels of success are actually pretty comparable.

For instance, Nick Lowe was the in-house producer for Stiff Records. His "in the red" production style on Elvis Costello's first handful of records and The Damned's debut LP (just to name a few) profoundly influenced Punk, Power Pop, and New Wave and continue to influence those genres to this day.

He is also an incredibly successful musician and songwriter in his own right. He had a prolific career as a solo artist and as a member of Rockpile (a band he led with Dave Edmunds, and whose Seconds Of Pleasure LP is a Power Pop classic). His songs have been covered by Wilco, Elvis Costello, Rod Stewart, and Johnny Cash among others. He still tours North America and Europe as a solo artist, and routinely plays to packed houses.

So yeah, Nick Lowe is far from irrelevant.

Probably old news but....Southern Lord will be reissuing Dopesmoker later this year, remastered featuring new artwork and backed with a live version of Holy Mountain. by Kommodorein stonerrock

[–]jojotv 2 points3 points ago

Ha! Funny thing, I was at my friend's studio the other day and his partner showed up and dropped off a DAT tape. I asked him what was on it and he said "Some High on Fire and Sleep stuff I'm remastering for Southern Lord".

My friend has the best job ever.

My cousin owns a kennel and breeds these beauties. Meet Pacman. by lezbean1in pitbulls

[–]jojotv 7 points8 points ago

The world has so many Pit Bulls that need homes that I question whether or not its necessary to intentionally breed them. They're already so overbred that humane societies and dog shelters are completely inundated with Pits that will most likely be put to sleep.

OP, no offense but i have to urge anyone reading this to never buy from breeders like your cousin. Adopt from rescues or your local humane society instead.

Is there a better beginner synth for around $450? by TheWeakestLinkin synthesizers

[–]jojotv 2 points3 points ago

I have an SH-101 and I still enjoy messing around with the 201 at my local guitar shop. I would never buy one, but it isn't a bad choice for a first synth this day and age.

I've seen a Juno 6 go for $350 in the last year. I have no idea why they are so cheap.

TIL there is a massive rain forest in the north of Iran by cybrbeastin todayilearned

[–]jojotv 6 points7 points ago

One of my good friends at work is Iranian, and last week he showed me pictures from his most recent visit home to Tehran. I was shocked when I saw a city covered in ice and snow. It totally blew my mind that I had always thought of Iran as being nothing but an endless desert when in fact it is anything but.

In fact, the pictures I have seen combined with the stories I have heard from my coworker make Iran seem like the most beautiful place on planet Earth. A year ago I would have never even considered going, but now the only place I obsess over visiting is Iran.

I used to sort through donations at Goodwill. What's the strangest thing you've found in a thrift shop? I'll start. by mellow_harsherin AskReddit

Don't count on finding anything cool for super cheap. This was in the early 90's, back when old analog equipment was generally thought of as being antiquated and undesirable. Nowadays that kind of stuff gets put on eBay the second goodwill gets it's hands on it.

[–]jojotv 2 points3 points ago

I have never worked at a thrift store, but a friend of mine was a sorter at Goodwill and he claims that one time an entire duffel bag FULL of dildos came through. They just threw the whole thing in the dumpster on the side of the building. A couple hours later he made another trip to the dumpster and the duffel bag was gone.

He also told me that these neat little tape delay machines called Space Echos used to show up all the time in the 90's, and being an experimental music geek he always snatched them up. His boss didn't even seem to care since they only sold for 5 or 10 bucks back then, and after a while he had a dozen or so Space Echos sitting around his apartment. When he told me this I just about lost my mind because these days they go for at least $600!
