Just got an iPhone. Saved $2700/2 yrs vs. AT&T. No contract. by cryptorchidismin Frugal

[–]jhov85 0 points1 point ago

I may look into this. What I did was I tracked my usage and realized that with a ATT family plan (which I have 2 iPhones) unlimited text messages includes free calling to any network so we dropped down to 700 minuts + rollover, unlimited family texts and 2 gb data. With my employer discount (which is just enough to eliminate taxes and fees) our bill is $125/mo or $63 each.

If its the same network $20 a month savings for the same service would be worth it.

Will using several credit cards for the one-time cashback bonus lower my credit rating? by charuganin Frugal

[–]jhov85 1 point2 points ago

I would not recommend opening a ton of credit cards just to take advantage promos. I do recommend that you optimize your credit cards by shopping around for a card that best fits your spending habits.

You will honestly spend less money if you make a written budget and know where every dollar is going.

Your credit score is determined by: 35% payment history 30% amount owed 15% length of credit history 10% new credit 10% types of credit used

From $7000 in credit card debt to >$1000! by seefernandoin Frugal

[–]jhov85 3 points4 points ago*

call capital one back and ask to have all annual fees waived. Chances are they will say they can't do that ask to speak to a supervisor and inform them you have another credit card with a better rate, no annual fee, better reward system, etc... Tell them you are willing to keep the card open if they can eliminate the annual fee.

Keep the card open. 15% of your credit score is based on the age of your credit accounts.

don't let the rewards/cash back bonuses give you a reason to get into debt. Once you pay off your cards pay them off every month or don't use them.

btw: I worked for capital one credit card in college

Hey Frugal: what is acceptable to go into debt for? by Thrasymachusin Frugal

[–]jhov85 0 points1 point ago

Congrats! after reading that you deserve to be where you are right now financially. Most people sit on their asses and complain about debt, student loans, working, etc... You actually got up and followed through on your commitments. I wouldn't be shocked if in a few years you were extremely well off.

If you can continue to payoff your credit card every month then you should use your credit card for everything you purchase and pay it off every month. also, this would be the time to look into cards that offer good rewards.

The only things, in my eyes, that are exceptible to go into debt for are 1) a house and 2) business related expenses i.e. business loan.

Your friends who buy everything on credit will always have nicer things than you, but in the long run you will be able to do what you love in life with out the added stress of working to pay debt.

Remember Tyler Durdens quote from fight club:

Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don’t need.

ELI5: Why Dick Cheney is a "war criminal", and worse than other Bush-admin politicians who also pushed for war. by HeroLeanderin explainlikeimfive

[–]jhov85 3 points4 points ago

People consider Dick Cheney a war criminal, because there was no evidence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. This was the whole basis for entering and bombing Iraq. Also, Dick Cheney was the Chair and CEO of Halliburton which is the largest US military defense contractor. No conflict of interest there
