Just heard the NPR episode on the Fed High School Challenge. Are there other competitions that involve economic knowledge? by DWalrusin AskSocialScience

[–]jewsicle 0 points1 point ago

The whole concept and essay prompt was pretty vague. A classmate and I started it last summer without much intention of getting a great deal out of it or any expectation of winning. We ended up being able to get a class credit for it, so that made us work a little harder. To our surprise we received an honorable mention and 2000 dollars. We really just wrote what we thought answered the question well. We had a little help (and I mean very little) from our adviser, an econ professor. The people running the contest were very responsive to emails and questions, so I would say if you are curious shoot them an email. My one piece of advice, if you do decide to participate, is nail down how you are going to make the video as soon as possible. We had one person back out and the second tried to ditch, but we convinced her stay with it. Also, if you would like I can send you a link to the paper we submitted.

Consequence of the new US budget: "A Future Without Key Social and Economic Statistics for the Country" by larsgain Economics

[–]jewsicle 1 point2 points ago

Unfortunately, it is very costly to collect such data. Therefore, a private company is not likely to share there data for free. Government data is the backbone of economic and and other social science research. Without the quality of academic output would fall dramatically.

Statistical knowledge is the core of knowledge; statistics is what tells you if something is true, false, or merely anecdotal; it is the "logic of science"; you can't be a modern intellectual and not think probabilistically — but let's not be suckers by anupakkihalin Foodforthought

Those models you refer to use statistical data to measure the certainty with which we can say that the observation is true. Without statistics we could not tell whether an event we observe was an anomaly or causal outcome.

If venus fly traps, or any plant that consumes other organisms, were edible, could a vegetarian eat them? by jewsiclein AskReddit

[–]jewsicle[S] 0 points1 point ago

From Wikipedia: In biology, an organism is any contiguous living system (such as animal, fungus, micro-organism, or plant). In at least some form, all types of organisms are capable of response to stimuli, reproduction, growth and development, and maintenance of homeostasis as a stable whole.

Grass is an organism.

But the actual flesh is not absorbed. The potassium, nitrogen, and other minerals that build up in the soil as a result are.

Can anyone reccomend a good hostel or something like that? by Aspelin washingtondc

I would suggest Duo Housing. It is near logan circle between the mt. vernon and mcpherson square metros. I was there yesterday to interview for an RA position and the place was really nice and clean. And the staff that I met seemed great. They have some pretty strict rules about drinking on the premises and lights out times.

Questions about starting salary with an Economics degree by burn_all_the_thingsin AskSocialScience

[–]jewsicle 1 point2 points ago

I have seen a lot of articles that say the average starting salary for an a person with a BS in econ is between 40 and 50 thousand. But, like others have said, it varies enormously by field, location and specific background. You will make substantially more if you land a job a top consulting firm than at a non-profit, both of which higher people with a BA. Also, if you have a strong background in statistics or a lot of work experience you be much more marketable.

If you want to get an idea of salaries at specific jobs in which you may be interested check out [Glassdoor.com](www.glassdoor.com). People post salaries, interview information, company reviews for most of decently sized companies. I have found it very useful in my job search.

This happened to me while I was in China. We got the bill at the restaurant and it was like 20 yuan more than it should have been because of the napkins.

Manufacturing: The third industrial revolution - The digitisation of manufacturing will transform the way goods are made—and change the politics of jobs too by cosmicalin TrueReddit

[–]jewsicle 1 point2 points ago

This is not true on any level, and is the same argument against technological change people have been making for centuries. In any production process there are two available inputs: capital and labor. The ratio of these inputs is determined by their relative prices. If labor becomes very plentiful, and therefore cheap, producers will increase labor inputs. There will always be jobs, they just will not be the same jobs.

Could someone help me write a resume? by waqasrgin forhire

[–]jewsicle 0 points1 point ago

Biggest thing I learned was potential employers often don't put as much onus on the education you worked so hard for as you might hope/ like. Don't put this right at the top.

If he is currently a student, education should be the first item. Just like you would list your employment history starting with the most recent.

[–]jewsicle 2 points3 points ago

just don't put one. Dive straight into the resume. Most often you will be able define your objective in a cover letter.

my one piece of advice, no matter how many people recommend it, don't put and "objective". Your objective is finding a job and it always sounds hokey and fake every time I read one.

Does anyone know where I can find information or a study investigating the interaction of US social and welfare programs? by jewsiclein AskSocialScience

[–]jewsicle[S] 0 points1 point ago

I'm actually doing a Monte Carlo analysis of an MDRC report. Unfortunately, I don't have the variance covariance matrix to generate the correlation between the components so I am trying to find other estimates I may be able to use.
