Irony by Albuyehin funny

A firetruck on fire is irony. This is coincidence. And poetic justice for being douchey enough to have flames on your car.

Thoughts/predictions for this year's Tony Awards? by pitythechildin Broadway

:)

Once is getting attention because it's shaking up what a musical is usually like. There's no orchestra in the pit because the actors on stage accompany themselves. The stage is a pub before the show and during intermission, so you can go up on the stage. The band is playing before the show and you don't even realize the show has started because the lights go down in a subtle way, and you're a part of it. Really sucks you in. It's almost daring in its simplicity.

I saw one of the first bway previews, a Wednesday matinee of all shows, and the audience just went bananas over it. Instant standing o. A lot of theater people say it's one of the best things they've ever seen, so maybe it's an insider thing.

Once is about the atmosphere they create. you're not gonna get that immersion from listening to the cast recording. I haven't heard it, but someone said it's kind of tinny and flat.

Maybe it's just not the right kind of show for you. For me, Newsies is everything i can't stand about musical theater. The leaping and spinning and sliding down poles, jazz hands crap.

First off, I'm routing for Once to win everything. Easily my favorite show of the year. So intense. I'm also hoping Porgy and Bess does really well. Saw it twice and want to see it again before it closes this fall. Both amazing shows. Just saw One Man Two Guvnors and nearly split with laughter. It's a crazy funny show. Other Desert Cities was really solid. My BF walked out of Newsies at intermission, he hated it so much. I had a chance to see it but couldn't care less. Follies was a spectacle, but, eh, it was ok. Was nice to see Bernadette live. Anyway, this list is biased towards what I have seen. I'm much less able to talk about plays than musicals, but here are my picks.

Best Play: Other Desert Cities

Best Musical: Once

Best Book of a Musical: Once

Best Revival of a Play: haven't seen a single one of these. Wit … ?

Best Revival of a Musical: this is anyone's guess. It might be Follies or Evita, but I really really hope it's Porgy and Bess

Lead Actor in a Play: Philip Seymour Hoffman, just for the name recognition, but that is a very crowded field of top-tier nominees

Lead Actress in a Play: anyone's guess, people are saying Tracie Bennett is crazy good as Judy Garland

Lead Actor in a Musical: who knows, I think it will be Danny Burstein, but it would be nice if Norm Lewis won. Poor Steve Kazee doesn't stand a chance in that lineup.

Lead Actress in a Musical: Audra McDonald. Audra ALWAYS wins. She makes an impressive Bess. Maybe Jan Maxell, but she is kind of overshadowed. Would like for it to be Cristin Milloti, but she also doesn't stand a chance.

Best Director Play: dunno, maybe Nicholas Hytner, One Man, Two Guvnors

Best Director Musical: John Tiffany, Once (I hope)

Scenic Design Musical: Ghost, people are saying the use of video is pretty cool. I wouldn't know, I'll never go see it, haha.

Costume Musical: Follies, lots of feathers and rhinestones, whee!

Your opinion on old wooden coasters? by AGreatAdventurein rollercoasters

[–]jetmark 0 points1 point ago

I'm a season pass holder for SFGAdv for the first time, mostly because of El Toro (currently my #1), Nitro and Kingda Ka. I'm not a big fan of loopers. I'll ride them all but they're not my faves. It just doesn't do it for me.

Rolling Thunder is extremely rough. The whole ride is a body slam. The curve at the end is the craziest part. It never occurred to them to bank it? It just slams your body against the side of the car.

I rode The Cyclone at Coney Island again a few weekends ago. That is one crazy fun coaster. It's rough, too, but in a totally different kind of way.

The Cyclone is like a bucking bronco, with lots of little dips and swerves and surprises, while Rolling Thunder is like getting kicked by a horse repeatedly.

of course, this perfectly explains it, but it must be several hundred times larger in scale to show up like that on video…

Yup.

Perfectly explains why the lights generate on one side, grow, and fade out on the other side.

Also, what freakin language are they speaking in that video? God bless Wisconsin. I've never quite heard that accent before.

By coincidence, I'm currently reading How I Killed Pluto and Why It Had It Coming by Mike Brown, discoverer of many of these post-plutonian objects

EDIT: the cover quotes are pretty funny, including hate mail from elementary school kids for demoting Pluto to planetoid.
