critique on my bant pod deck by mathewryanin magicTCG

[–]jesterofthecourt 0 points1 point ago

I play Bant Pod and I would say that in terms of 6 drops, you are more likely to want sun titans/wurmcoil engines over frost/primeval titan. Frost titan's ability to lock down a nasty creature or land can be nifty and all, but the versatility of sun titan normally means getting back an O-ring or phastasmal image would be a better option. With primeval titan I find that when you are at the stage that he is on the field, you really don't need too many more lands, either you have a pod out and are about to pod him into Elesh Norn (another point I will come back to) or you have just hard cast him and you have enough mana to cast anything in your deck.

Now, Elesh Norn is essential in the deck, as it is Birthing Pods main finisher, the board wipe effect is brilliant, but making your BoP or other mana dorks a threat is where this card earns its place at the tip of the pyramid.

Those are the main things I would change, but also the inclusion of an Archon of Justice I think would help the deck a lot, as that thing is a beast.
You could also try this site for ideas, it helped me a lot when I started building my first Pod deck: http://www.mtgtop8.com/event?e=2236&d=215228

The "How I did at the Pre-Release" thread. by blekkjain magicTCG

[–]jesterofthecourt 8 points9 points ago

I just got back from my pre-release, the second I have ever done.

In my initial pool my rares consisted of Malignus, a foil Killing Wave, Gloom Surgeon, Rite of Ruin, Deadeye Navigator, Devastation Tide, and Avacyn, Angel of Hope herself.
I ended up playing a white blue angel/soulbond/flicker deck with a lot of bounce spells coming from blue and a lot of beefy flyers from white. The deck was slow, so I struggled with fast decks, but I was generally able to stabilize.

Match 1 (1/0)
My opponent was running a B/U deck that was reasonably fast. Our first game went for 30 minutes with me going to 3 life, then back up, then down to 2, then back up, then down to 1, then back up after I managed to create a life gaining combo with Nephalia Smuggler and Goldnight Redeemer gaining 8 life per turn. It lasted until I finally drew Avacyn, to which he instantly scooped. The next game was cut short due to time, match 1 was a victory.

Match 2 (0/2)
I had played this guy before and he was incredibly friendly, he was playing a three colour deck (W/G/B) and he had Sigarda, Host of Herons as his bomb. My first game was a blowout, as I just couldn't keep up with his tempo. And the second game I mulled to 5 and he dropped Sigarda turn 5. With no outs I scooped, we shook hands and wished each other luck.

Match 3 (2/0)
This guy was in fact the guy I played in round 2's friend, to which I had heard he also had a Sigarda, and was also playing 3 colour with Cavern of souls and the green 1 CMC enchantment that lets a land tap for any mana. The first game was awesome, it was the first time I was able to use some of my decks synergy. Soul-bonding Stern Mentor and milling myself I was eventually able to get back Avacyn with Defy Death, making her a 10/10 vigilante, flying, indestructible tank that he had no way of dealing with. Stomping his Sigarda to death was satisfying to say the least. Game two was a bit closer with Seraph of Dawn really working its ass off, eventually winning me the game with flyers and a lucky Into the Void, to bounce his two beefy creatures.

Match 4 (2/0)
This was another really friendly guy, he was playing boros (R/W) and didn't really have any bombs. His first play both games was him shocking me to the face, despite having creatures out he could have killed. Game one I managed to reanimate my Avacyn again, which prompted an instant concession. And game two I just managed to draw all my creature bouncing spells, and he just couldn't keep up with my fliers.

Rap Up
Avacyn may not be standard playable, but I didn't see a bigger bomb in the sealed event. The synergy with Stern Mentor and Defy Death was awesome as well. Seraph of Dawn was a powerhouse, helping me to stabilize after a brutal start and even a good reanimation target; really pulled its weight. Finally my favorite part of the deck (Avacyn aside) were the creature bounce cards, I had 2x Peel from Reality, 1x Into the Void (brutal card), 1x Devastating Tide, and 1x Vanishment. These bounce cards were exactly what this slow deck needed to help me reach my beefy, high CMC angels, and by allowing me to swing, most of the time for the win, was simply brilliant.
I ended up winning 6 more boosters from which I pulled an Angel Of Jubilation, Hellhound of Griselbrand, Desolate Lighthouse, another Deadeye Navigator, Druids' Repository, and a Bonfire of the Damned which I am quite excited about.

TL/DR Went 3-1 with U/W fliers, Avacyn is a bomb

Well shit, a 2 cmc planeswalker, and people said WotC weren't paying red enough love.
I would say that whilst the +1 and -4 abilities are not overly powerful, if you can keep him protected long enough his -6 ability might just be timed perfectly for you to untap, -6 and win the game.

I am really looking forward to seeing how standard shapes up with these new walkers!!

Damn, I just traded a bunch for some pod pieces. Two inkomths in the red deck is insane. Can we expect the price to plummet as a result?

Standard Bant Pod by jesterofthecourtin Magicdeckbuilding

[–]jesterofthecourt[S] 0 points1 point ago

Yeah I could probably get some viridian corrupter's in there, but the Acidic slime fulfills that role nicely, and I can't see Grafdigger's cage entering the the meta of my kitchen table group.

[–]jesterofthecourt[S] 0 points1 point ago

That is actually a pretty good idea. My only concern is that she isn't pod fodder, whilst I may pod into her, you wouldn't necessarily pod out of her, which I could see disrupting the flow that pod tends to have.

Yeah I have found the 4 slot the hardest to fill, not a lot of toolbox's in standard at least. Deceiver exarch could be cut back on I agree, but I do still quite like untapping pod and podding again.
Dual lands are something that I will probably get eventually, but for the time being I would like to get the core components online.

Hey reddit, what skill do you have that is mediocre to you, but amazes everyone you show it to? by JPannulloin AskReddit

People always comment on my ability to rifle shuffle a deck of cards. Its something I have been able to do since I was young and never really gave it much thought, but apparently it is impressive. As soon as someone points it out however, I start thinking about it and then end up playing an unplanned round of 52 pickup.

Landfall Deck Suggestions by frogdude2004in magicTCG

[–]jesterofthecourt 1 point2 points ago

I run a landfall deck in kitchen table and I have to say that the best card you can have is Ruin Ghost. Combined with Tideforce Elemental you can bounce each land you control for one mana, combined with roil, admonition or emeria you have a pretty brutal combo going exiling/stealing all their shit and playing a ridiculous amount of bird tokens.

Here's the deck I run, it goes ok in kitchen table but I wouldn't expect it to be particularly competetive. http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/wu-landroll/

What Series: What would be your THREE planeswalker abilities? by Frotchin magicTCG

[–]jesterofthecourt 16 points17 points ago

Jun Gritto, The Plagueborn 2BB

0: Proliferate

-1: Put a -1/-1 counter on up to 2 target creatures

-8: Target opponent gains an emblem that states "At the beginning of your upkeep, put a -1/-1 counter on all creatures you control"

(4)

Might not be appropriate for the current format, but I do love -1/-1 counters.

I have managed to get my hand on two snapcasters from booster packs, I also have a grave and sun titan. But not having a full playset makes deckbuilding impossible. I just really want to make one, fun, decent deck.

Managed to nab myself a Grimoire of the Dead and a Essence of the wild, ended up trying a black green deck and doing perfectly average, winning 2 of 4 games. Managed to combo the mythic's at some point pulling 7 Essence of the wilds out of both graveyards, that was nice. since then I have built a black blue control deck, main idea being stock the deck with creature removal then tutor for grimoire. That card is a game-ender, the deck is a lot of fun to play.

Yeah, comboing emeria angel with ruin ghost and tideforce elemental means you can churn out 1/1 flyers for 1 mana. My entire deck is basically based around this tactic, its loads of fun.

Yeah, I tried that and couldn't do it to save my life. So crappy MS Paint job came to the rescue, as always.
