Excellent post on why the DnDNext/5e fighter isn't so boring by FailsAtEverythignin rpg

[–]jestergoblin 3 points4 points ago

When we played, our cleric tried to do that. He was killed three times. The other classes are not nearly as effective at fighting. It doesn't matter if you're equipped with a maul, because the squishiness of everyone else has drastically increased. After one or two hits, a Wizard goes down.

The biggest change I've noticed is how much weaker the characters are in DNDNext, which drastically changes how important it is to have a character who can be hit more than twice.

7th Edition did, it told the story of the Paladin War on Dominaria.

The resonant fantasy was started in M10, before that core sets were just reprints of existing cards.

Do I need to pull out my old Inquest price guides again?

I'm pretty sure Call of the Herd hit $30 at one point.

This fixes the issue of loner being completely unplayable in multiplayer while still allowing it to function similarly in combat. It's similar to how Red looting was changed between Dark Ascension and Avacyn Restored.

Between what we've seen with M13 and Planechase 2, this summer is definitely giving off the vibe of Alara 2, especially a post-Conflux Alara.

I think it is clearly a better take on the loner mechanic. Controlling only one creature versus attacking with only one creature are very similar, but fits with Wizards method of reducing the number of negative abilities in the game (similar to hexproof/shroud).

Black Exalted and Loner have basically no synergy.

7th Edition was set solely in Dominaria during the Paladin War, it was the only core set with an actual storyline.

But it is definitely shaping up to have a strong influence of Alara then I would expect, especially when paired up with the new Planechase 2 cards. This summer is definitely giving off the vibe of Alara 2.0.

I completely understand what you mean. It is one of those passages that can be taken in a horrible direction. I don't want to turn this into some crazy political debate but I think it shows the big difference between 616 and Ultimate Cap.

You could, but I find DNDNext encourages more based on the simple fact that you don't have any special abilities or spells spelled out for you. The playtest Fighter has two attacks listed: attack with an axe and shoot a crossbow. That's it.

If you are used to 4e and see no special attacks, I can understand how that feels wrong.

I played as the Fighter during a PAX East playtest and had an absolute blast. I usually play a magic based class like Wizard and Warlock, so it was a nice change of pace. Sure, combat originally was mostly me charging and slicing in combat (how else were we going to kill that troll?) but the little touches that allowed for real role playing made it fantastic. Knocking over a barrel of javelins as an opponent charged at me to create an obstacle or realizing I couldn't reach my opponent thanks to a table in the way so I just kicked the table into him, pinning the wretched goblin against the wall!

Or there was the time when I had a torch and a cask of brandy while these giant bugs flew overhead. I could have tried to knock them out of the sky with my throwing axes, but instead I smoked them out by igniting the brandy and they got woozy and fell to the ground stunned.

And there is nothing like pulling a throwing axe out of your own arm to then chuck it right back at the damn goblin.

And we did all of this without a grid or minis.

If you think the fighter is boring, you're doing it wrong.

I don't see it as an "add-on: to the loner mechanic, but more of a correction. This feels very similar to how Red looting was changed between Dark Ascension and Avacyn Restored. They are clearly based on the same thought process.

As for exalted in black, it makes sense that a demon would be more powerful because a bunch of cultists worship it. However, the shards of Alara no longer exist post Conflux, so it makes sense for these abilities to bleed.

Exalted = demon worship and that seems like a perfect fit to me.

Three things.

  1. M13 seems to be set in Alara, no idea if it is pre or post Conflux.

  2. Legendary creatures are back in M13, last seen in 10th edition.

  3. Loner mechanic has been modified and actually works now!

Which isn't that hard to do for a lot of utility Legacy cards.

Hell, if you really wanted to, you could buy ALL the copies of Firestorm or Mirri's Guile listed on TCGPlayer for under $1000.
