Found a scorpion in my bed this morning. by Thementalrapistin AskReddit

[–]jayjaym 0 points1 point ago

Scorpions are evil and bug killer is useless on them. I've literally had a scorpion swim in commercial grade bug killer for hours and it didn't die until I smashed it.

The only thing that kills a scorpion is the bottom of a shoe, or possibly a heavy book, maybe fire.

Your best option is to eliminate anywhere they might get in, and eliminate their reason for being there. They eat other bugs, so spray for other bugs, and check any window screens for holes or gaps. Eliminate any gaps around doors.

It may sound insignificant, but I just paid off my credit card, my car and my student loan and now don't owe any bank a single dollar. What are your achievements you'd like to share? by thatguyintheskyin AskReddit

I've been on both sides of this, and I'll take debt free. The way you think about money and stuff changes significantly after you've been debt free for a while. Psychologically 20k in debt and 20k in assets ≠ to debt free even if you don't have any saving.

I didn't assume blowing the money. It's possible to save an have debt, however if you are debt free and your income changes your budget is much more flexible.

If your income changes and significant portions of your income is already spoken for making debt payments you can find your saving rapidly depleted (assuming you had any) and it becomes increasingly difficult to make your financial obligations.

That looks good on paper, but none of it takes risk and peace of mind into account. I've been debt free for seven years, and it's fantastic. About a year after I paid everything off my employer announced some pretty significant pay decreases. In previous years I might have been in a panic wondering how I would cover all my bills, but with no debt it wasn't as big a deal. It still sucked, but I could manage.

Some debt is necessary. The expense of a home and college tuition make them near impossible to achieve in a reasonable time frame without incurring some kid of debt. Anything else should be avoided like the plague.

The only thing increasing the price of junk food will lighten is a persons wallet.

Heaven forbid somebody be responsible for what they shovel into their mouth.

Staying warm at night - how do you accomplish it? by JessicaBunnehin hiking

[–]jayjaym 0 points1 point ago

I've routinely had over nights well below freezing when camping.

A thermal break between you and the ground is a must. I prefer a closed cell foam pad. They are durable, light and cheap, but a bit bulky. For a little extra comfort, I'll throw on a 3 inch open cell foam pad on top of the closed cell pad.

I've just never found air mattresses to be very comfortable, and they inevitably get a holes and lose all their air. Usually in the middle of the night.

In my area, it's cold enough that I don't even look at a sleeping bag unless it's rated for 0 degrees, and even then, I keep a wool flannel sheet inside the sleeping bag. I've found that it helps retain the heat in the bag, and eliminates cold pockets when I move around.

I usually sleep in my skivvies, and stuff all my cloths for the next morning at the foot of my bag. It helps add some insulation to an area that tends to get cold, and my cloths are warmer for getting dressed in the morning.

For really cold nights, I'll wear a wool cap, and drape an extra shirt or light jacket over my face and arrange it so only my nose and mouth are exposed so I can breath.

Alternative Medicine and Lifestyle Change Solutions by peacoatin migraine

[–]jayjaym 1 point2 points ago

My migraines are caused by fluorescent lights. I am extremely sensitive to them.

With the proliferation of CFL's, fluorescent lights are virtually everywhere. I don't leave the house much (fortunately I work from home, so I can still support myself and family). Most of my hobbies are outside, or done at home.

When fluorescent lights are unavoidable, I have a pair of WileyX motorcycle sunglasses that I had custom tinted darker than average and to a color that seems to be more soothing to my eyes. The motorcycle glasses have a gasket that runs around the edge and blocks any unfiltered light. With the sunglasses, I can tolerate 30 - 60 minutes of fluorescent lights (it varies depending on several factors). Without the sunglasses, even a few minutes of exposure will result in a migraine.

On the rare times when I do have to travel, I literally travel with a pack of 60 watt incandescent light bulbs so that I can replace any CFL bulbs where ever I am staying.

Columbia calls on US and Canada to decriminalize drugs by wutisupmonin worldnews

[–]jayjaym 0 points1 point ago

On a purely monetary vein, I wonder what what it would cost to treat people for drug addiction (that asked for treatment) Vs. the cost of locking them up and fighting a war on drugs around the world.

Treatment has got to be cheaper.
