[Weekly Discussion Thread] Scientists, what are the biggest misconceptions in your field? by fastparticlesin askscience

[–]japko -1 points0 points ago

Well, personally, I think that is a bad attitude. Consciousness is a phenomenon that might be difficult to define, but it is real as a certain whole, unless you have a strict behaviorist approach. It's too complex for us to fully understand, but I believe that its mechanics will be understood as well as any other process' in our bodies in the future. In my opinion, as for now, we get to know pieces of consciousness (like http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2012/05/120521115353.htm ), but scientific effort shoud be done to link them together as a wholesome system.

Start VERY small. Forbid yourself to even think about doing anything big like asking a stranger out. Then start asking women for the time or directions. First once a week, not more. When you start to feel less incomfortable, do it gradually more often. Look at it this way: what is the worst thing that can happen? You can get anxious, start stalling or shaking, blushing, or make a mistake while talking. Ask yourself - will the notice that? What if the will? She might ignore it, but she also might ask if you're ok. Or even worse, she can answer your question about the time and walk away smirking and you'll think that she's making fun of you. Can you live with that?

On the other hand, what can you gain? You probably know best but take a minute to think about it.

Think this through thoroughly.

This, by the way, is the way cognitive behavioral therapy works.

Is he related to Christopher McCandless? The man who's tales were pictured in Into the Wild? I think Christopher's father had something to do with (aero?)space engineering.

edit: why the downvote? Into the Wild is based on a true story.

This made me wonder. What is the probability that the same word will be misspelled in two dictionaries?

I have never used marijuana. As a result, all I know is based on the seemingly constant praise and justification it receives on the internet. Reddit, what are your worst experiences with the drug and why is it illegal? by MagikalGiantin AskReddit

[–]japko 1 point2 points ago

Truth is, it's less toxic than alcohol and many other drugs. Nobody's sure wether it's neurodegenerative or not, but alco definitely is. Different researches about long term neurological effects of weed seem to have contradictory outcomes. That means we cannot confirm nor deny that weed is neurodegenerative. It's less PHYSICALLY addictive than most drugs and alco. It might be quite addictive psychologically though. I personally know someone who was mildly addicted from weed but he dealed with it and now he can smoke with moderation.

For me it WAS a gateway drug (for hallucinogens). Also, intensive use for a longer period of time causes short term memory problems, but usually this effect wears off after a couple of months of not using.

A myth which persisting repetition I cannot understand is the lack of hangover. If you get really high, the next day you will feel different. It might be difficult to focus, and you will have a tendency to overlook details. It's a very bad idea to drive after getting very stoned the previous night.

You can have bad trips. They can vary from mild anxiety to full blown psychotic episodes. My personal opinion is that people with preexisting psychological issues have a slightly bigger probability of having a bad trip. What's more, marijuana is thought to have a triggering effect for appearance of schizofrenia. However, this is just a correlation, so we aren't sure about the cause-effect relation here. Perhaps people with some predisposition for schizofrenia just tend to try marijuana more, that people without such predispositions.

It can change your attitude to life or change your personality a bit. Sometimes in a good way, sometimes in a bad way (not based on scientific research). I for one, when on weed, realized that hard work is a valuable thing and going the easy way through life isn't always good for you. It was a year ago and it still has impact on my life. I'd say - in a positive way.

I'm still for legalization.

It only means that to some other people it's meaningful, and therefore, smoking from it is disrespectful to those people. If I made a J from a photo of somebody's mom or grandfather I imagine that this certain somebody might feel bad.
